“Is it more important for you to stay in bad or to wake up and help children?”

That sentence Clint Fleming used to get out of the bed when a snooze button on the alarm clock appeared more attractive then getting out of the warm bed. Picture of children that needed his pediatric expertise swept away the fatigue he suffered from due to the long nights he spent on preparing for his final exam to finish a pediatric specialization.

The exam meant much more to him than a simple title next to his name and perceptible raise in annual salary; with becoming a pediatric specialist, he would fulfill his grandfather’s dream of having three generations of pediatricians in the family. The Fleming’s were known as pioneers in the field of helping children and they demanded Clint to keep the same reputation. Even when he was a small baby, his father Ernest Fleming addressed him as ‘doc’. He was a ‘doc-boy’ until puberty after which he was only referred as ‘Clint-boy’ or ‘doctor’.

Clint’s mother, Carrie Fleming followed his father procedure. In three decades of their marriage she smiled only when the smile was appropriate and she cried only when Ernest believed that the tears can be justified by life events. Every other unexpected emotion would be welcomed by Ernest’s lowering, grim and menacing face as if he felt threatened by any expression that would go beyond his emotional range.

Clint never rebelled against the desired behavior or obligation to continue the pediatric tradition. Besides the adjustment to the fact that his father supported him only when he was fulfilling his expectations, he felt honored to be part of a family that cherished the noble cause of providing help to an uncountable number of sick children.

If Clint stayed in bed even after asking himself a question, he would experience a small scale anxiety attack that manifested though sweat, muscle tremble and a lump in a throat that prevented him from taking another breath. The wild beating of his heart had nothing to do with the sick children; the heart pounded because staying longer in bed was equal to spitting right in a face of his ancestors.

On that day, he jumped out of bed and his heart ‘decided’ to jump out of his chest. There was another reason for his heart beat and it lied on the table in a fancy little box. $ 18,042 dollars worth white and yellow gold custom made diamond ring.

As he was removing the one-day liond in front of the mirror, he practiced the speech that he wanted use to propose his girlfriend Veronica during a dinner in a famous Manhattan restaurant ‘Seven Elements’.

They have been a couple since the first year of college and together with the pediatric degree, he wanted to settle down and found the family he always dreamt to have.

Clint had everything Veronica always wanted in man. First and foremost, he knew what he wanted to become in life, he had a career that was already there waiting him to fulfill it. He was a shoulder to cry on without asking ‘why’. On top of that, she always compared his appearance to her favorite actor Hugh Jackman. Although there was not much of obvious resemblance, they two had in common two things: the masculine chin and firm confidence. His wide shoulders, built muscles and tender hands never missed to give her an orgasm. She considered herself to be a lucky woman based on their life in a bed room and the fact she didn’t match any famous actress by her look. Only once, a colleague joked that might be a ‘white Oprah’s sister she never met’.

Yet again, Veronica was afraid of predictability the life brought. Every corner of their relationship was predetermined and she had a feeling she will be able to calculate the weight of a dust in that corners once when his carrier becomes more interesting to him then the relationship. Indeed he was reliable person, but she asked herself why she should be the more important than hundreds of children that are waiting for his achievements. The pleasure of being a wife of such a man didn’t fulfill her soul; she wanted more out of life then a simple stay-at-home mom with the predictable role. As she was getting closer to the third decade of her life, she indeed though more often about the happiness that might happen as a housewife, but above all, she didn’t want to settle before getting a feeling she left her mark in this world. As a successful architect, she dreamt of a life that would give her the opportunity to build skyscrapers in every corner of the Earth. Those were the corners she wanted to remove the dust from.

As every many times before, they met in front of the restaurant. ‘Seven elements’ was the restaurant they went in ever since they earned their first paycheck. Although they lived in the same apartment, they would take two different roads to reach the restaurant just for the perks of pretending they are having a date.

In warm atmosphere, they both order favorite java crusted New York steak with stout glaze and a bottle of dark purple-black Carménère, 2008 Chono Reserva.

“I have very good news,” he said in excitement.

“Medical director of the children center promised me good position once I finish my degree. I will be able to be right next to the famous pediatrician from who I will be able to learn about neuro-pediatrics. I would die to see how it works from first hand.”

“As long as the patients are alive, feel free to die,” she laughed, “don’t get me wrong, I glad to hear that,” she added just to be sure she didn’t reveled any of her concern about his ambitions.

“I am just lucky, I am even thinking about a carrier of a neuro-pediatric surgeon. In worst scenario, they earn more than half of million a year,” he widened his eyes as if she supposed to be impressed by that sum of money.

“I have good news too!”

“Yeah? What?” he said with a slight disappointment in his voice.

“The chiefs accepted my deign proposition for the new Dubai tower. They will send my work as number one proposition to the investors of a project. If it passes, and the chances are high since my firm already had four contracts with them, we will become millionaires,” she took a sip of wine.

“I…I am speechless! Congratulations honey!” he bent over the table and gave her a kiss. He was genuinely glad, but one little part of him didn’t expected that she will earn more money than him.

“Thank you, sweetie,” she took another sip and gazed at the street. Her attention was stuck on a busy traffic as she wondered about other sides that their success might have.

Clint wanted to continue with the wave of surprises, and since she didn’t look at him, he placed a little dark box right in the middle of a table. She was not a woman who requested a theater to covey important message.

“What’s that?” she said as if she spotted a bug on the table when she noticed an (un)identified motionless object. Clint ignored her reaction.

“I did some thinking…”

“And?” she pushed him.

“I believe that we are made for each other,”

“And?”

“And I want to ask you…” he cleaned the through with few coughs, stood up and kneeled in front of her.

“I want you, Veronica Clayton, to be my wife.”

The people around the table starred with their eyes wide open. Few older ladies released few screams of excitement.

. When Veronica saw a little box on the table, she thought he bought another expensive gift. She was worried he spent money only because he was riding on a thrill feelings of his new position in the hospital. When he kneeled down, she realized that expensive gift was not the most terrible thing that might happen. To be under pressure to decide about her future in a brief second was.

“I...I …” she stammered.

“Yes, yes I will,” she smiled and put a ring on her finger, “I guess,” she murmured to herself without anybody hearing what she added over the loud plaudit of a guests whose life was enriched by another, what seemed to be, happy couple who will wove to spend the rest of off their lives together.

After the excitement of a crowed passed away, they sat down and continued with their dinner. She took two sips of wine in hopes it will collect her thoughts together.

“I…I am really shocked.”

“I can understand that, but it’s not really like it came out of the blue. We were talking about that more than once. And you know our families are still wondering why we didn’t do it when we graduated?”

“You see, I love you, and you love me, but I am not entirely sure do I really want that.”

“What do you mean?” now Veronica was not the only under shock.

“I mean…You see…,” she took another sip, “what if I go in Dubai and I want to continue my career while you are pursuing you own dreams. I don’t think I am ready to settle just like that.”

“Okay and I don’t see a problem with that. What is conflicting? It’s not that I want you to spend the rest of your life between four walls?”

“Well, I know…I am just worried that I’ll have to choose between my career and home life. Just like my or your mother.”

“I…I...I don’t think…” he couldn’t deny the words she said. On one level, he wanted a secure home and family like the one he grew in.

“I hope It will not turn like that…”

“You hope? You just hope it will not turn like that? I need more than a hope! “ she took another sip to calm down, “took I am sorry I raised my voice. It’s just, I am afraid of myself. I am afraid of waking up one day with the feeling I didn’t do anything with my life. I’d say yes right away if I would have few skyscrapers behind me.”

“But you still have a ring on your finger?” he said to point out the contradictory.

“I didn’t have guts to say no. What if I remove it?”

“I…” he gave her a look of a miserable child, “I would need some time to think.”

“Maybe it is better that way, maybe we should think” she touched the diamond. “I think we both need some time to think. I will not remove the ring now.”

“How much do you need?”

“Don’t ask me the questions I can’t to answer. We will find out. Can you wait if you want me so much?”

“Yeah I can wait. But don’t leave me hanging forever, please.”

“Don’t worry darling. I won’t,” she grabbed his hand and kissed him.

The stake was ready to be served.

“You know darling, we could go on camping after I finish the exam on Friday,” he said as he was watching the bartender bringing the plates with delicious meal. Clint wanted to spend more time with her in hopes that the time they spent will affect her decision.

“Yes of course. We haven’t done that in a while. I miss that. But this time, let’s rent a house in the mountains for one night? I don’t mind some comfort and we could enjoy the nature.  ”

Clint smiled. The ship didn’t sink yet.

***

They spent entire following week without mentioning Clint’s proposal and by end of it Veronica’s project got accepted by the investors and Clint passed the exam. They instantly organized a celebration and lunch for their families. She removed the ring only not to attract the stream of undesirable questions. Nevertheless, after they reached another milestone in life, their family’s expectations didn’t passed unnoticed; only this time it was even harder to force a smile in response to their questions.

The night was reserved only for them, and after few hours of passion they went to sleep in order to wake up on time to go hiking. Spending time alone in a nature was greatest reward they could receive.

After few hours of driving out of town and six hours of climbing, they reached the house they book on the internet. It was a cute cozy cabin with the fireplace and with the amazing panoramic view on the valley.

“I wouldn’t mind sleeping here more often,” she said while they watched the forest. It seemed as if the sunrays in dusk are taking down the rest of autumn leaves.

“You might get a chance. If we get married, we could buy a house here.”

“If,” she grabbed a ring and revolved it around a finger, “I’m sorry, I am just afraid to make a decision. I am afraid of taking the wrong one. Regret is not a feeling I want to spend the rest of my life with. I can’t lose you, and knowing myself I would lose my ambition in an advantage of a family. Your kids can’t have mother who is thinking about the next continent to build a tower on.”

“I am sure there is a way to combine both. You don’t have to lose anything, I know it might be difficult, but you are strong woman, you would find a way to do it. And besides, I wouldn’t be all that invisible to children. If I wouldn’t be able to take care of my own how would I take care of others?”

“Do you think you father showed you enough of care? Or he was too obsessed with you becoming a new ‘big Fleming’?”

“I…yeah…I see you point,” Clint was reluctant; it was still a topic he showed no interest to touch. Moreover, Veronica received lowering look.

“And what if you would have to give up on your career to be with the family? How would you feel about that?”

“Anxious,” he signed, “my family would disown me. I wish I was joking, but I am not. They wouldn’t want to see me ever again. I have a feeling that it would be easier to change my gender then to change a profession.”

“You see, that is what I am trying to say. You will always be your profession, and I don’t have a feeling I will be able to count on you. As I said I know myself, I would feel completely responsible for children and the house, I would take care of everything, but I would forget myself.”
