Wind rushed past. No Kieran to take the impact for him this time. He burned blood and used a partial shift to angle away from the building and the sidewalk, so he wouldn’t hit anyone. As he passed the halfway mark, he thought,

and laughed himself to tears. He closed his eyes and looked down at the lines of anima crisscrossing the world, like fast moving rivers he could dive into.
Armored arms circled his chest, crushing him, and four wings flapped in unison. His bare feet set down on the street.
“Prophets,” Amon-Alon muttered. There was another flap of wings, and the angel was gone.
Jonas grinned at the two wide-eyed Committee soldiers as he walked toward the revolving doors. “Hi guys,” he said. “Welcome to the new normal.”
