Rain could mean disaster for hay. It lets mold set in, and could kill whole flocks of sheep, or herds of cows.
“
I sure appreciate you helping my grandma. I did
n’
t realiz
e
…
”
She looked around the farm. She did
n’
t realize things had gotten this run down. It did
n’
t make sense. The numbers in the books were great. She could hire whoever she needed.
“I’
m not helping her, she is my boss. Your Nana would
n’
t take charity, even though I offered. Insisted on paying me. So I work hard, and she feels like she is getting a good deal
.”
Thane looked her over, his eyes hot on her body as he made no pretenses
.“
You look really good, M. Did
n’
t let city living get to you
.
”
She was a curvy woman, clearly plus size, but she was in good shape. She did
n’
t succumb to office pressure to be model thin, but she kept herself muscular.
Mackenzie liked to eat, and she was
n’
t going to apologize for it.
“
You are looking pretty fit yourself. All this farm life
?
”
“
Yeah,
I’
m doing it full time now
.”
He straightened, the look on his face letting her know that his firefighting days were not up for discussion.
She could still read him, even after all these years.
“
So, you going to lend a hand while you are here? Visiting
?
”
“
I have a mind to do a few things around here. Not visiting though, coming home to stay
.
”
“
Really? Thought you were never coming home. Not in
a‘
million year
s’.”
The smirk on his face was almost too much to take. He knew she was home to stay, and he was making sure to torment her about it. She wanted to smack that grin off of his sexy face.
Especially because she knew just what he was thinking. He told her as much five years ago.
“
Ready to settle down, I guess
.”
She shrugged and gave him her look that said the subject was closed.
Before awkward silence settled in between them Nana came back out through the house, the screen door slamming as she set the tray of cookies down on the porch.
“
Well, are
n’
t you two hitting it off? Just like old days, huh
?”
Mack detected a wink as the old bird nestled into her rocking chair and pulled out her cross stitch. The ironic kind, with bunnies on them that said mean things.
“
The old day
s
…
”
Nana trailed off, her voice becoming wistful as she leaned back and forth, the familiar creak of the rocking chair sending her to a different time.
Nana was starting to look her age, and that really concerned Mack. The old woman was anything but a grown up child.
“
You could say that, Nan
.”
The truth of it was, before they were hot and heavy, they were mortal enemies. Even if that was just a middle school grudge.
Sometimes it was easier to let out all that anger, and if it helped Mackenzie get past this, it was what she was going to embrace.
“
Mack was just telling me that she was more than willing to help me with the hay bales that I already have ready in the west field. Just gotta pile them into the trailer and stac
k‘
em in the barn. Should
n’
t be too much. You got some clothes you do
n’
t mind getting dirty
?”
He asked, a mischievous grin on his face.
“I’
m sure I have something, somewhere
,”
Mack responded.
“
Do
n’
t forget to wear long sleeves. Hate to see that pretty skin get a rash from all that hay
.”
Thane winked at her.
She stood and turned away from him, opened the screen door and walked through the house. She let it slam as she walked back towards her room, not giving him the satisfaction of seeing the irritation on her face. No, she was going to play nice, at least for now.
