“You’re wrong, Raylan.”  Darin reaches up and cups Raylan’s face in his hands like he had in the kitchen earlier and swipes the pad of his thumb lovingly across Raylan’s bottom lip.  They stare at each other for a long moment and then Darin closes the space between them and kisses Raylan soft and slow and tender.  Raylan is stiff and distant for a moment, but then he melts into the kiss like he’s desperate for it, like it’s the only thing that’s important in the world.  When Darin pulls away a few minutes later Raylan’s flushed and his eyes are bright and there’s a small smile creasing his face.

“I did get a choice, and I made it the moment I saw a wolf at my door and decided to let you into my house and my heart.  It was always just a matter of time before we ended up like this, Raylan, and I don’t think I could ever want it to have turned out any other way.  This, everything that’s happened, it all worked out just the way it was supposed to, and Raylan, I don’t have any regrets.”  His voice is serious and his heart is steady; it’s important to him that Raylan understand this, that he understands that Darin doesn’t blame him for anything.

“Oh, Darin, I’m going to have so much fun showing you the world you belong to now.  You’re going to be a marvelous wolf.”  Raylan laughs, low and soft and with such sheer joy that Darin can’t help the way a grin settles over his own features in response, and when Raylan reaches out and wraps warm arms around Darin they both breathe a sigh of contentment.

Darin’s pretty sure that all the roads they would have taken together would have ended up here like this anyways so he’s not angry.  He knows that he has a lot to learn, that Raylan will have to teach him how to control this new part of himself so he doesn’t sprout fangs or fur every time his heartbeat rises.  He knows things aren’t always going to be easy or fun and that there might be more danger in the future like what he’s already faced.

Darin knows all of these things and yet he can’t help but think that if it means he gets to spend the rest of his life with Raylan by his side … well, he might actually be coming out on top anyways.
