“Feel better now?” Mara asked from behind him.

Opening his arms, Nick folded her into his embrace and they stood together silently for a few minutes.

“I guess tonight, seeing everyone for the last time, and then all going our separate ways, makes it pretty real that it’s over. I did all I could, we all did,” Nick said.

“No one could have done more,” Mara agreed. “But we’re not going our separate ways, you and I.”

Hugging her, he said, “No, never.” Lifting her hand to his lips for a quick kiss, he admired the plain gold band. They’d been married by the admiral within two hours of arriving on the battleship
Penelope.

Curling her fingers around his hand, Mara went on tiptoe and kissed his cheek. “Listen, since you don’t have to testify at that Senate Board of Inquiry for two weeks, I have an idea.”

“Oh?” Nick smiled. “I’m open to suggestion.”

“My company has luxury cabins up in the mountain resort north of the city. We use them as perks for big clients. They’ve offered one to me, indefinitely. How about we go off to my borrowed cabin, hide from the world and just be us? Have a honeymoon, get to know each other, Major?”

“I like the way you think, Mrs. Jameson.”

Laughing, they strolled inside the restaurant to gather up their things and head into the future together.

Nick took one last glance at the peaceful ocean under the three moons as he slid the door to the balcony shut.
Moving on, moving forward, surviving. Not forgetting, because that would be impossible, but taking the life that was given back to me, to Mara, that night on the
Nebula Dream
, and making the most of it, for ourselves and for those who weren’t so lucky, on that ill-fated voyage into Sector Seventeen
.
