Godwin’s assumption that Shelley would continue to provide him with funds even while he was refused entry to his house was based on his doctrine of ‘stewardship’, summarised thus by William St Clair: ‘If by the operation of an absurd economic system a teacher lacks the modest resources necessary to do his duty, then it becomes the duty of others to divert some of their surplus towards him’ (

, p.344). Godwin did not view Shelley’s assistance as a favour, or as a symptom of the younger man’s generosity, but as the proper fulfilment of his duty. Shelley initially accepted this argument, and, for the first few years of their acquaintance, continued to fund Godwin even as he disputed his treatment of his daughters.
