Chapter 44

Because Mick and Em loved the converted Victorian house and couldn’t bear to leave the space that had initially brought the two of them together, they had decided to change Em’s current unit to offices and guest quarters and keep Mick’s unit for their living space.

The two of them lay on the Mick’s big sectional, taking a make-out break before they finished the gargantuan task of moving Em’s kitchen items to the new space. Em held her left hand up, wiggling her fingers to make the emerald-cut diamond flash in the light while Mick busied himself with running his finger along the lacy cup of her bra.

“So you still like your wee bauble, do you?” he murmured in her ear.

“I do, very much, Mick, but you know I don’t need a ring at all; I just need you,” Em said, turning to kiss his mouth.

“I need you, too, ducky. As a matter of fact, I need you right now, right here.” Mick rolled Em to straddle his hips, his hands moving quickly to finish unbuttoning her blouse. Em stroked Mick’s beard with her fingers and ran her thumb lightly over his pouty bottom lip. Mick had just freed her breasts from her bra when the phone rang. He groaned in frustration.

“I’ve got to answer this. It could be the guys I hired to move the rest of the furniture down. There’s no way I can move that giant divan. I’m getting a hernia just thinking about it.” Mick rolled Em off him and himself off the couch to answer the phone.

The alarm in Mick’s voice pulled Em’s attention to the telephone conversation. By the time he hung up, she already had her shirt buttoned and her shoes slipped on.

“Em, we need to get to the hospital, now. Something’s happened to Granny Sellars.”

Mick drove to the hospital quickly, his face and hands tight. Em sat in the passenger seat, silently, her hand resting supportively on his shoulder.

They were greeted at the hospital by two uniformed men, one wearing a chaplain insignia. “Oh no,” Em breathed and closed her eyes.

“Michael Brennan?” one of the officers said.

“Yeah, I’m Michael Brennan,” Mick said as he stuck out his hand.

“This has never happened to me before,” admitted the chaplain, who introduced himself as Chaplain Cody. “Please sit down.” He indicated two chairs in the quiet hallway.

“We notified Mrs. Sellars of her grandson’s death this morning. He was killed by an IED in Afghanistan earlier in the week. Mrs. Sellars was overcome and she suffered a major heart attack. Mister Brennan, she didn’t make it. Thankfully, Private Jesse Sellars also listed you on his family notification form, sir.”

Em interrupted the chaplain. “Where’s the baby? Granny Sellars watched over her while Jesse was deployed. Where is she?”

A stern woman who had come into the hall during their conversation now spoke. “And who are you, ma’am?”

“Ermengarde Davidson, Michael Brennan’s fiancée. Who are
you
?” Em didn’t like the tone the woman had used. Mick had remained sitting, silent and still, his hands cupped over his mouth.

“I’m Felice Jackson with Children’s Services. We’ve got Emily Sellars with a social worker until we can get things sorted.”

At the news that the baby was in foster care, Mick flew out of the chair. “She needs to be with us. There’s no way Jesse wouldn’t have designated a guardian for her. He was a product of the foster system until his grandmother took him in. He knows how bad it can be.” Mick’s nostrils flared and he clenched and unclenched his fists. Em placed a calming hand on his lower back and leaned into him, hoping to soothe him.

“Ms. Jackson,” the other officer said, “Mr. Brennan is designated to care for the child in the instance Mrs. Sellars was unable to do so.”

Ms. Jackson sucked on her teeth in response. The officer took her by the arm.

“I think we need to talk to your supervisor, Ms. Jackson. Let’s go call her.”

As Ms. Jackson led the officer down the hall, the chaplain gave Em and Mick a sympathetic nod and gave them some privacy.

“Mick, what are you feeling right now?”

“Oh, Em. I think...” Mick began.

“No, what are you
feeling,
Mick? Not thinking. What’s in your heart if you had to answer right this second?” Em looked deeply into Mick’s eyes.

“I’m feeling overwhelmed, Em, and blessed to have you by my side.” He let out a shaky laugh. “You up for this, ducky?”

“I think that it’s a miracle…and that it’s a sign, Mick. A big, fat, honking sign.” Em beamed at him.

Mick’s small grin slowly grew into a wide, joyous smile.

Epilogue

Em watched Mick and baby Emily snooze in the recliner. She supposed she should go get the little girl and put her in her crib, but Mick enjoyed sleeping with the baby on his chest, her head tucked under his chin, his big hand holding her little diaper-clad bottom protectively.

A wave of emotion overcame Em as she covered her two favorite people with a soft blanket, pausing to kiss both of them on the cheek.

“I see you looking at us, Mama Em,” whispered Mick, his eyes still closed but a grin tugging at his mouth. “It’s pretty cute.”

“You two are pretty cute,” Em said, giving Mick another kiss.

Mick put the footrest down and moved Emily to his other shoulder. He caught Em’s hand and pulled her down. Unlike Em’s soft peck, Mick’s kiss was full of heat, his eyes also burning with desire.

“Why don’t I put her down and then I’ll go down. How does that sound?” Even Mick’s voice sounded lusty.

Em chuckled. “That sounds divine,” she said with a wink.

“Excellent. Don’t bother putting on the magic panties tonight, Em. I want to see you spread and naked for me.” He nipped her gently on the neck.

Em grinned made her way into the bedroom, pulling off her clothes and leaving them in a pile on the floor. She got into the bed and positioned herself in the center, spreading her legs wide and resting her arms along the headboard.

Mick entered the bedroom, stripping off his clothes as he approached the bed, his cock already hard and huge.

Em ogled his stiff erection. “Mick, is it possible you’ve gotten even bigger?”. He laughed as he climbed up the length of the bed, like a predator stalking his prey. He took a moment to glance down and shrugged.

“B’y, but you’re a bad bit nice, Em,” Mick murmured as he fisted his cock. “You’re going to have to ride my face, because there is no way I can lay on my stomach, girlie, and I’ve got to have my mouth on you. Turn around, spread your legs, and grip the headboard for me, ducky.”

Mick slid on his back between her legs, his face just below her folds. He traced his fingers over her wetness before he plunged his tongue into her core. Mick pulled her deep into his mouth as he gripped her hips, his thumb working her clit. Em rubbed against his face and Mick groaned into her softness.

“Em, you’re as sweet as honey,” he growled.

Em moved one hand from the headboard to grip Mick’s hair. Mick grabbed her hips and, putting her knees over his shoulders, maneuvered her harder to his face. He wrapped his hands around her hips and pulled her down, plunging his tongue inside her core while gripping her ass firmly. Em ground her pussy into his face as he flicked and sucked, driving her crazy with lust.

Em’s body jerked and a rumble of laughter vibrated against her slick softness. Mick was unmerciful, eating at her lower lips with big soft bites while plucking her nipples with one hand.

Her orgasm erupted suddenly, rolling through her and causing her hips to buck wildly. Mick kept his mouth on her, holding her hips and ass forcefully to his mouth, swallowing her climax.

“I need you in me, Michael,” she gasped, pulling at his hair almost painfully, “now.”

With another chuckle, Mick slid up, his back now along the headboard, Em’s breasts rubbing along his chest. “God, that was fantastic, Michael,” she moaned into his mouth, kissing him and smelling her own scent in his beard. She lowered herself on to his hard cock, leaning back so she could watch him disappear into her.

“Oh, that is dead sexy, Em, the way you’re watching me join with you,” Mick said, his voice raspy with lust. “Sweet Janey Mac.” He had his hands on her hips again, grinding her against him while he pumped his hips up into her. Em threw her head back and arched her back, offering her breasts for his consumption. Mick caught a nipple with his teeth and softly bit down. Em jerked with pleasure, rolling her hips quickly against him. Mick sucked one whole areola into his mouth, running his tongue over the nipple the way he had her nub just a few moments ago. She mewled with pleasure, feeling her orgasm building. It was almost too much when Mick thumbed her.

She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, pulling her breasts against his chest. They looked into each other’s eyes, torso against torso, gazing intensely while their bodies moved in synchronicity. Mick ground into her hips and held, unable to contain his orgasm any longer. He grunted and moaned Em’s name, grimacing with deep pleasure. Seeing Mick’s face contort with bliss pushed Em over the edge again, her channel throbbing and gripping his cock. They finished together, still looking deeply into the other’s eyes and leisurely slowing their movements.

Em kissed Mick’s mouth, the side of his jaw, and his temple, smoothing the hair on his head and his beard down with her hands. Mick kissed Em’s neck and nibbled on her ear. He lay back on the bed, still joined with her, and pulled her down to his chest.

“I love you, Em,” he murmured. “I love you more than you can imagine.” His hands roamed over her sweat-slicked back, his fingers drumming a pattern over her sides and bottom.

She rested her head under his chin. “I love you, too, Mick. I love you more than just about anything in the world.”

She kissed the hollow of his throat, and they slept, joined, until the early morning when they were awakened by the babble of the baby they both loved. Together, they rose and went into the nursery to start another day that was just a bad bit nice.
