Violet sat back in her own chair. “What do you think happens to them if they disappear like that?”
Rory shrugged his heavy shoulders. “Not sure. Nobody knows.”
She glanced at Alessandro and could see the same concern in his eyes. “Is there any chance we’ll disappear like that?”
After a heavy beat of silence Rory shrugged again. “We can only hope that the couples that do disappear are in the depths of Faery somewhere. The only facts that tie all the missing couples together is that they were all apparently deeply in love with each other.” He gave them a narrow-eyed look. “But I want you to know this. I could die tomorrow and I would be content. Being with the two of you has made me happier than anything else.”
Violet felt tears fill her eyes at the vehemence of his tone and she nodded her head.
“And me as well,” Alessandro whispered.
The three of them clasped hands around the table, then moved as if of one mind to embrace each other. Violet and Alessandro each took half of Rory’s chest to cuddle against, while Rory buried his face in their hair, and Violet couldn’t imagine being anywhere more spectacular.
“You know,” she murmured, “the night before you guys came to the shop the first time I had griped to the empty apartment that I wish I could find a couple of decent men. I think Faerie may have been conspiring even then because that next morning you walked in my door. No matter what Faerie does to me I will always be thankful to have had this time with you.”
They kissed away her tears and carried her to their bedroom, where they cuddled and played for the rest of the night. Violet thanked her stars for her blessings.
