Great, just
fuckin
g great
.

I rubb
ed
my forehead.
While I liked the idea of almost being indestructible, I could do without the other two.

Okay, let me think about this. Can you get me any extra information about what I should expect?

Yeah, sure, Chief,

he answered.

I

ll ask around but keep it on the down low.

Thanks Harris
.

I g
a
v
e
him a weak smile
, none of this was his fault and I couldn

t hold his answers against him. He was just trying to help me
.

Also, we

re going to do some follow
-
up on my last case. I want to know everything about Bernard, especially his
shifter
ties. Was he part of the local pack? Are they involved in his illegal activities? That sort of thing.

I know he was a member of the pack,

Harris answered, looking over the extra file I had just given him.

I don

t know of any pack involvement, most of the pack are good people. I don

t think the Chicago Master was part of it either.

Chicago Master?

I asked
,
raising an eyebrow.

Vampires have a hierarchy,

he explained.

You can be a vampire and have no rank, but there

s the council over in Europe, then a vamp in charge of each continent, one over every country, then lastly one over each major city. For the US, I know there

s one for the Midwest as well. So, there

s the East Coast Master who

s in charge of all the Master vampires in charge of cities on the East Coast.

Okay, I

m following you so far
.
So Bernard had ties to the Chicago Master vampire?

Yes, if a vampire is powerful enough, they
have a
tie with a breed of shifters
. Every vampire gets some type of gift or talent. As they get older
,
they can get more and form bonds, like alliances with certain shifter types
. It

s almost as if the natural order of paranormals understands that we can

t always be fighting between ourselves
,
and
,
if we

re going to survive
,
we need to have friends.

The master vampire, when they

re powerful enough
,
will start to smell like pack. But also like Alpha and master vampire to keep all the vamps and pack in line
,

Harris continued.

The Chicago Master

s animal is the wolf.
So to strengthen the alliance between wolf and vampire, he

s hired some of the wolves from the pack to work for him.
Bernard was one of
his
wolves. I don

t know if he was just part of his crew, or if Bernard was his wolf
like the vampires can be
.

You lost me.

I pinched the bridge of my nose.

I understand they can form some bond. Is it like bonding of auras or how a vampire can turn a human into a vampire and they feel allegiance to their maker?

Neither really.

He gave a sigh and rubbed his hands over the file in front of him as if formulating his thoughts.

If a vampire is old and powerful enough to have a few gifts and his or her own territory, then he can become more than just a master of vampires.

I get that. You said the wolves would smell him as an Alpha.

Yes, but it

s more than that. When I

ve smelled the Chicago Master he smells like ninety percent vampire and ten percent wolf. So he

s a vampire, but he

s got a partial wolf shifter scent as well.

Okay, so then the wolf shifters of Chicago smell that small part and automatically recognize him as friend, not foe.

It was smart. If paranormals were the minority then nature would have come up with extra ways to en
s
ure their survival.

Yes, exactly. The Alpha of the Chicago pack smells mostly of wolf but with a hint of vampire so the same thing happens with the local vamps. It cuts through all the shit of being different types of paranormals. No matter what the wolves or vamps might think, their inner survival instincts tell them that they are on the same side.

Alright, I follow you to a point on that,

I replied
, my brain starting to hurt
.

Can you and your team find out as much as you can on that
?
I need to know if the Chicago Master is involved in gun smuggling as well or if it was just Bernard.

You got it, Chief,

Harris answered
,
gathering everything I had given him together
in a neat stack
.

Anything else?

I think that

s more than enough for now, Harris
,

I chuckled
,
pointing to the large pile of work I had just given him.

But I appreciate the enthusiasm.

I meant if you had
any more
questions, ma

am.

No, I

m good, thanks
.

I st
ood
as well
, having my fill of the Q&A session
.

I

ll let you know if I come up with anything else. Now go get with your team and get your ass in gear.

I

m on it
.

H
e snickered playfully as he left the conference room.

Now that I was alone in the room, I took the opportunity to stretch my limbs a bit as they were stiff from being in the same position for so long.
While the meeting had taken
more time
than I had thought it would, we ended up getting a hell of a lot more accomplished than I had planned. I cleaned up after my new employees
, chucking the cups and napkins in the trash,
before gathering my own belongings and head
ing
to my office.

I let out a sigh of relief as I s
a
nk into the chair behind my
now-clean
desk. At least no one
had
out
-
right challenged me or
taken
a shot at me. All in all, I think the agents of this office wanted to be real FBI agents. I just don

t think anyone ever showed them
how things should be done
or had faith in them. Well that had changed
and
hopefully they could change with it.

Chapter 4

The next couple of days fl
ew
by in the blink of an eye. I work
ed
continuously, only stopping to go home and crawl into bed. The amount of work we got done was astounding. Everyone seemed to take in the new rules and regulations gracefully, glad to actually have a useful
role
in the FBI.

Wednesday night
,
I was so wiped I made myself call it an early night. I pulled into the parking lot of my apartment at seven. Climbing out of my car, with take
-
out in hand, I closed the door and locked it. Th
at

s
the
only excuse I have for not hearing my attacker
.
I was just too tired to be paying attention.

I was only able to catch a glimpse of his dark silhouette before h
e slammed me against the side of my car, knocking my keys and food from my hands. Unfortunately, they were still trapped under my body, making it impossible for me to reach my gun. He took advantage of that, grabbing a handful of my long
h
air and pulling my head to the side. As soon as my throat was exposed
,
he sank his fangs in my neck, drinking deeply.

I felt every hair on my body stand on end as power crawled along my body.
I could feel myself slip inside of his head, learning his deepest, darkest secrets and longings. Some part of me was evilly laughing as I learned how to squash this man in the worst way possible. Oh this was a new trick I didn

t think I wanted to have.

But, it also showed me what I had to do to get out of this mess.

Vampire,

I said in a seductive
voice
I

d never heard out of my mouth
.
There was also a quality of
deepness
to it
that didn

t seem my own.
Not Good
!
I was scaring myself and my inner evil bitch was loving the fact that something big was about to happen.

The vampire instantly stopped drinking then released his hold on me. I turned around and drew my gun to face him, but he had fallen down on one knee
with his head bowed
.

What would you have of me, my mistress?

he asked
in a velvety voice
, his
head tilting up and his
gaze fix
ing
intently on mine
, almost like
he was
in a trance
.

You have only to ask and I shall do as you command.

Wait, what?

I asked stunned.
What had the inner evil bitch done?

I am yours now, my lady,

he answered.

Do with me what you will.

What do you mean, you are mine?

Now my neck
and
my head hurt.

You have
made me your
s
and have nullified all other allegiances
. I am your vampire now
and you are my sovereign
.

You can

t be mine
.

I sh
oo
k my head
, unwilling to accept that
.

I didn

t make you a vampire.

No, but you
r magic has overruled all others and tied me to you.

He glanced at me curiously now.

But I never felt such a tie to another before. It as if I would do anything to please you.

He reached
up
to touch m
y
cheek
and I stepped along the car and
further
from him.
