Authors: Evan Osnos
When we were barely out of our teens, I met Jennifer Joel; when she became a literary agent, I became her client and, thus, the beneficiary of her immense gifts as a reader and an advocate. At ICM, she has been aided by Clay Ezell and Madeleine Osborn, and I thank them all for their expertise and care.
My family, which is vast and devoted, put up with a decade's worth of missed holidays and birthdays, interspersed with visits fogged by jet lag. My extraordinary mother, Susan, raised us to be at home in the world and to stand up for the values that matter; Peter, a newsman and publisher, is, forever, my mentor, inspiration, and coconspirator. My wise sister, Katherine Sanford, and her husband, Colin, fed me and revived me; their childrenâBen, Pete, and Maeâshowed us what a family can be.
Sarabeth Berman came to Beijing to stay for a year. Then she met me. Seven years later, we returned to America, married. China gave me Sarabeth, and for that alone I am grateful to it. She has given me a second family: Ruth Nemzoff and Harris Berman, Kim Berman and Farzad Mostashari, Mandy Lee Berman and Seth Berman, Rebecca Berman and Franklin Huang. Sarabeth's love, her wisdom to prefer every word be read aloud, and, most of all, her laughter, sustain me. Her innate good judgment makes every sentence better. Nothing that I write, except for this paragraph, is done until she hears it.
