“I
’m not sure whether I’m sleeping or awake. I’m too tired to be awake. I have to be dreaming. That’s why I’m not startled when I feel a warm hand, touching, fondling, and arousing me. Can this be a wet dream Carrie talks about?”

Chapter 1: Olivia

“W
hat’s up tonight, Olivia? You’re searching through the papers looking for another job I see. Can’t you relax, you’re making me nervous. You take things too serious,” Carrie says to me with her big not so innocent eyes studying me.

“And you stick your head in the sand and pretend that things don’t exist.” I turn my computer to the side and let her see what is left in my bank account. And I motion to the pile of unpaid bills setting to the side, held down by a rock, a large one.

“Chill. I’ll just call my mother and ask her to borrow some money.”

“Didn’t you do that last month to help me pay your portion of the rent? Are you planning on getting a job anytime soon?” I ask Carrie. She hunches her shoulder and drinks her energy drink.

“If all else fails, we can go to Alaska and get jobs and see some great looking men. I hear there are ten men to one woman. They don’t get to see two gorgeous women in the flesh every day.” Carrie struts around looking in the mirror. She’s pale with dark brown hair and blue eyes. Maybe five feet three inches in three inch heels. Pretty by most standards.

I think I’m an average looking black girl with hair to my shoulders that I get straightened when I can find a hairdresser that does black hair in Seattle. Most of the salons do weaves and they cost an arm and a leg. And now I don’t have two nickels to rub together.

“Don’t flatter yourself, Carrie. Where did you hear about Alaska men?”

“On the internet.”

“Yeah, on the internet. So it must be true,” I say to her with a smirk and a roll of my eyes. “That’s yesterday’s news. Like back in the day news.”

“Things couldn’t have changed that much. Here’s an ad.” Carrie plops down on the side of the bed and she opens this newspaper article from the Seattle Times. “Wanted young women to work hard for a few months at a lucrative job. Willing to pay top dollar, provide lodging, food, and airfare.”

“There’s something suspicious about that. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. It doesn’t say what the job is and it doesn’t say what the pay is. We could be lured to Alaska by a serial killer or worse yet a sexual predator and serial killer.”

“If we both go, and you know, and I know we need the money, we can look out for each other. I’m going with or without you, “Carrie says flashing her big blue eyes at me.”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re so suspicious, Olivia. What’s up with that?”

“That’s not suspicion you see in my eyes. I’m just being careful. Do you remember when you were trying to sell your car on Craigslist? I tried telling you that meeting guys at a burger stand wasn’t how that’s done. Now you’re out of a car. ”

“You were the one who gave up my car,” Carrie says to me.

“What did you want me to do? When his partner pulled a gun on me and said to un-ass the car? I tried to un-ass it as soon as possible, and I gave him money for gas. He looked desperate.”

“You didn’t have to give him the rent money too?”

“Honey when a black man says he’s desperate, you don’t argue, you just give him what he wants. If he had asked me to give him a piece, I would have done that too, but not without a fight. I didn’t stay a virgin just to hand it over that easy. ” Carrie saw my eyes narrow and one eyebrow raise and she knew that I was upset, she knew where the conversation was going, so she quickly changed the subject back to a trip to Alaska.

“Where’s your sense of adventure? We can meet some really great sexy guys in the outback.”

“We’re not going to Australia, we’re going to Alaska, and that’s a whole different kind of place. We could meet some really ugly sex fiends who hasn’t had a lay in years. It’s a wilderness out there and men hunt with guns and they don’t just hunt animals.”

“Look at it this way. We have been meeting some ugly sex fiends in Seattle. You know the ones who saw FSOG a thousand times.” I nod and laugh.

“Remember what happened to me at the neighborhood bar. I go home with this guy because I’m drunk, and its dark in the bar, and I think he’s hot. He has this great body but I don’t get a good look at him because of all those frigging candles. Then I have to call you from my cell phone because he has me in this room he calls it his red room, but it looks nothing like Christian’s Grays red room.

It’s a little closet in his mother’s house. Thank god I have it on speaker phone when I’m whispering, ‘Help! Help! Call 911!’”

Chapter 2: Olivia

“W
hen I can focus, he takes out a rope and this gag, and he’s ready to tie me up and whip my ass, and I can’t take whippings because I bruise easily because of my delicate skin. I try explaining this to him, and I sober up, I look at him, and he’s uglier than I first thought. The kind of man only a mother would love.”

“Wait. You’re saying if he was good looking you would have let him tie you up, gag you, and spank your behind?”

“Maybe,” she says hunching her shoulder and shooting a grin at me. “Do you remember that night?”

“How can I forget that? I had just sat down at a dinner with another loser but this loser was planning on buying me a lobster dinner and you ruined that. I had to call the police and try and locate you before he tied you up to the ceiling fan naked. When the police and the fireman get there you are wearing handcuffs, a blindfold, and not a stitch of clothes.”

“That fireman was hot with his big biceps, and boy did he have something big and thick between his legs. We had a few dates before I moved on. He was more of a freak than that ugly dude,” Carrie says with a wide smile showing her well-polished white teeth.

“I was pissed with you because I lost a dinner that night and almost a friend.” Carrie hugs me, happy she has a friend. I don’t know who would put up with her. She likes men too much and she has a trusting nature.

My concern was the dinner I didn’t get that night, because I was hungry, and sick of eating tuna sandwiches. Even they were getting too expensive for us.

“What do you say Olivia. I need someone like you with me to take care of me. I’m not responsible for my actions. I’ve been too protected in my life. I see the glass half full and I think everyone is good. I need someone like you.”

“I see just the opposite because I’ve had to.” My parents died early, and I’ve lived with grandmothers, aunts, uncles, one family member after the next. Life has sucked for me. Even when I get a job teaching, I don’t have any money and have to wait until August to start working and I’m not getting paid until sometime in September. “Life sucks and men suck more,” I say to Carrie.

“Yeah, I hope they do,” she says grinning. “Now you are the kind of person I want to have my back. You are so matured for twenty-two.” She kisses me on the cheek. “What do you say?”

“Ok. I’m going, but if something isn’t right about this, I’m getting the hell out of Alaska even if I have to walk back to Seattle.”

Carrie jumps up and down and she calls her mother to borrow some money until she gets this job. Me, I think we’re traveling on a bridge to nowhere, but she’s determine to go and freeze her ass off and my ass too.  She skips out of the room like a little girl on a stroll in the park.

When I see her again she says, “It’s all done. The arrangements are made, and we’re set to leave tomorrow at noon. Our tickets will be waiting at the American Airlines counter. And,” she says jumping up and down, “We have priority seating. Like in first class all the way to Fairbanks, Alaska. Now what do you say about that?”

“I say I’ll believe it when I see it.”

“Ever the pessimist. Can’t you be happy for once?”

“I’m trying but everything looks so suspicious. We are going to a strange place and we don’t know who will meet us at the airport, and we’re broke.”

“It’s not a strange place, it’s America for god’s sake. We will see men. I hear they make lots of money working in the oil fields and on the pipe lines. And some of them haven’t seen a woman in months, maybe years.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of. The only pipe that might get laid is in us,” I murmur.

And Carrie rubs her hands together. “I don’t think they see black women often in some of those little towns. They have a treat coming. You with your dark skin and all those white men. They haven’t seen a tan on a woman like forever. I bet they would pay to see you in a bikini.” I peer at her because I can’t believe what I’m hearing.

“What town are we going to?” I ask her and she hunches her shoulder.

“Does it matter?”

“Hell yes it matters. We could be the only women in the town,” I said concerned.

“That could be a good thing,” Carrie says smiling.

“What do you mean?”

“You know how to cook.”

“Yeah.” I wanted to see just where she was going with this.

“We could get jobs at a restaurant and cook. I hear they pay lots of money for cooks and waitresses if our other offer falls through.”

“So I will cook and you will be the waitress. Is that your plan?”

“You know I don’t know anything about cooking. I’ve eaten fast food all my life. You have skills, Olivia. That’s plan B.” I hate to think what plan C is.

“Not the kind of skills to cook for a group of men.”

“No. Maybe one.” I wondering if Carrie is telling me everything. “Look, I have to find some warm clothes,” I say to her because I want her out of the room before I change my mind.

“And don’t bring those granny underwear.”

“Why not?” I question. “It’s cold.”

“You never know when you may meet a man you like. What’s the use in buying all those expensive Victoria Secret thongs if no one gets to see them?”

“I thought this was about working and getting some money to make it through a couple of months?” I look at her and I can tell something is brewing. Carrie always gets herself in trouble and expects me to get her out.

We’re both twenty-two but she acts like a teenager.

Chapter 3: Chance

“J
ack, have everything ready by the time I get back. I hope you hired someone to clean and cook this time. I don’t want to get back here, work five hours in the cold, check on the men, get out to that pipeline and then come back home to a place that’s cold, dusty, and there’s no food. I don’t want you to hire any young women. Instead of them doing their jobs they are off fucking you and getting nothing done.”
