I inhaled and then exhaled threading my fingers through his dark straight hair then down to his chest. His body forms chill bumps when I stroke his chest. And when my fingers creep south to fondle him, he knows I’m stalling.
Anthony grabs my wrist. “Tell me baby. Tell me now.” I climb off his chest and stand near the bed, drag my feet over and picked up his robe, and he sits up bracing his back against the headboard in anticipation. I plop down in the chair Randall sat in watching over us as Anthony slept. I didn’t know how long he had been looking at us.
Anthony smiles at me. “It’s that bad? Don’t tell me you are pregnant. We could use that to get you out of your marriage.” He thought about it for a few minutes. No that wouldn’t work. Randall would just find another reason for his campaign. His lovely wife is with child. I bet that would get a lot of black votes,” he says not taking this serious. Then he glances at my grave face. “Well, I gather you’re not pregnant. Why are you letting me guess, what’s the problem? Tell me now Lilly.” His voice raises and there’s a deep tone to it. He’s concerned.
I bit my lip and then bit my nails. I never knew how to respond to problems and bad news. I glance at Anthony and his face changes. He’s tired of playing games with me and he wants to know what has me nervous. He jumps out of bed and I jump up from the chair and dodged around the chair and he catches me and brings his arms around me. He looks down at me. “Now tell me what has you so upset.”
“While you were sleeping, I woke up and guess who was sitting there?”
“My maid?” He says smiling at me. “She lost her key and she wanted to come in early so I didn’t lock the door and didn’t put the alarm on. I agreed because she said she wouldn’t disturb us. She was just going to dust and clean the bathroom and be out of here before we woke.”
“It wasn’t the maid...” I hesitated wrapping my arms around me. Then I said all at once, “It was Randall.” Anthony’s hands dropped and he raked his hand through his hair. “And you didn’t wake me?”
“I tried. But you were sound asleep.” He walks in a circle and then leaves me to get the bottoms of his pajamas out of a drawer. “What did he want?” he says stepping into them and tying a drawstring.
“He said that he wanted to speak to you today, when you wake up.”
“What are we going to do?” I ask.
“We’re not going to do anything. I hadn’t plan on him finding out about us until later but I will have to confront him and tell him how I feel about you.” He sucks in his breath. “Get dressed and I’ll have the restaurant bring us some breakfast up.”
“How can you be so calm, Anthony?” I ask as he walks over to me sensing my nervousness.
“What can he do now that he knows I’m your lover, and if he wants to do more, than he has a scandal to deal with?” Anthony says looking at me lost in thought, his eyes wandering across the river front.
“I don’t think Randall even cares who I sleep with. He had this eerie smile on his face watching us lying together.”
“He cares Lilly. It’s the kind of man that he is. If he can’t control me or you he cares.” Anthony sat in a chair and took my hand and pulled me down on his lap. I lay my head on his chest, felt his beating heart, and his arms tightening around me, and I knew Anthony loved me. I didn’t believe him when he first said it, but I know it now. He reacted different. He was a different man. A man that wants a woman and doesn’t care who knows it.
A man willing to do anything for me. I just hoped it didn’t come to that.
