I kept glancing over my shoulder, fearing I’d glimpse the Mortclaws chasing after us as we moved closer and closer to the ocean. All the while, I had to continue blasting Rona—who, I reminded myself, was
not
actually my cousin—to keep her from giving up.
Finally, a salty breeze trickled through the thinning trees and filled our nostrils. We arrived at the shore, bounding out onto the sand.
Rona collapsed, surrendering to her grief.
And I… I wasn’t sure what to think, or what to do now. My only objective just a matter of hours ago had been to flee The Woodlands. Find somewhere within the universe where I could seek refuge from the life that had been dealt to me.
But now… How could I abandon my homeland now?
The Mortclaws were not merely killing the Northstones out of revenge. They were killing to
eat
. For
food.
My mother had said so herself.
In which case, what if the Northstones were only the beginning of the Mortclaws’ attacks?
Who would be next? The Blackhall tribe? What of Cecil, and the others I loved?
I’d never felt so powerless. I was as good as a stranger to my parents and so-called family while they were in the heat of their hunger. They were far too strong for me to overcome even one of them, let alone take on all of them. And whom among my compatriots could I call upon to help? It wasn’t like I could gather an army to quell them. They would simply become the next targets of the Mortclaws’ appetite. Being the leaders’ son, I was safe.
But what chance did everyone else stand?
