Chapter Twelve

Cora

I slipped the freshly pressed jacket of my tuxedo on, checking myself in the mirror to make sure my tie was straight. The suit was custom made for me by one of the top designers in the country, and fit my like a glove.

As great as the suit was, I could care less how I looked right now. All I wanted to see was Cora in the dress she’d found. I’d offered to get someone to do something custom for her, but she insisted on off the rack. I smiled, thinking about the way her cute little nose scrunched up when I told her she could have a twenty thousand dollar dress.

“Why would I waste that money on a dress I’m going to wear one night? How about I find something off the rack instead, and we donate the money to a research center for dementia instead?”

God, I loved that woman. Her selflessness never ceased to amaze me. The way she fought for me, the way she fiercely loved – there was no movie role on this planet that could top that. She was absolutely amazing in every possible way, and I was the luckiest son of a bitch on the planet.

“You almost ready, babe?” I called. “The limo’s waiting.”

“Two more minutes,” she called back. “They’re not finished fussing with me yet. Ouch! Good Lord. These fake eyelashes are a pain. I feel like someone attached weights to my eyes. How am I supposed to blink with these things?”

I couldn’t help the smile that stretched across my face. Hell, she could be in sweats and a tee shirt, and she’d still be the most beautiful woman there tonight. But I knew it was important to her to look her best since the entire world would be watching. A movie premiere might be old hat to me, but this was a big deal for her.

After everything that happened last week, I was ready for one drama free night. The day after the now infamous break-in—something that had yet to not be a top headline on every news source—Miranda booked an interview with Diane Sawyer where she broke down and confessed everything; well, her version of events anyway. She admitted she’d had two abortions and didn’t tell me about them, but tried to claim she had no choice and felt pressured to not lose her perfect size zero shape for movie roles. She attempted to come across as a sympathetic love-struck victim in all of it, but when Diane asked her some hard questions that put Miranda in a harsh light, Miranda screamed at her and ran off set. The next day, she checked herself into rehab for undisclosed reasons. I’m sure she’ll spin some story when she gets out, but for now she was out of my life and I was done wasting my time thinking about her.

“Okay, I’m ready.”

I turned just in time to see her coming out of the bedroom and my heart stopped in my chest. She was breathtaking in a strapless navy gown. It had a corseted waistline that accented her beautiful curves that was even more set off by the silver beading that clustered on her left hip and trickled down the length of the gown, giving the effect of a falling star. Her hair was swept to one side and held there by a silver beaded broach.

She left me speechless. I had been to dozens of red carpet events, but no one had ever taken my breath away like Cora had just now. I half debated throwing the stylists and Simon out on the curb, tearing the dress off her, and then having my way with her all night instead. The other half of me couldn’t wait to show the world just what an absolutely amazing woman she was, and shout from the rooftops that she was all mine.

“I’ll take it from the way your jaw is currently on the floor that I look okay? Or is my skirt tucked into my Spanx?”

I strode up to her in three determined steps, my hand sweeping behind her neck—careful not to mess up her hair—and I tilted her back, bringing my lips close to hers. “There were eight wonders of the world. But you, my Cora, standing in front of me tonight, make nine.” I brushed her lips ever-so-softly. “Stunning is too insignificant word. Beautiful doesn’t do justice to your tiny finger, let alone the rest of you. You could launch a thousand ships, my love. A hundred thousand.”

I glided my lips up her cheekbone until I reached her temple and kissed the racing pulse point there. I wanted to kiss much, much more of her, but I restrained. Instead, I righted her again and held her steady as she wobbled a bit in her heels. Her eyes were wide and tears brimmed at the edges of the lids. She quickly brushed them aside with her thumb.

“I…how do I even respond to that, Breccan?”

I grabbed her hand and gave it a small squeeze. “Just tell me that you love me again. And that you always will.”

“Always,” she nodded, returning my squeeze as I led her out to the awaiting limo.

Excerpt:

“Want a beer?” I offered from my fridge. It was one of the few things I had in there.

“I thought I was supposed to buy you a drink?”

He pressed himself against me, so that my back was against the wall. My breath caught in my chest. Jesus, he moved fast. Just how I liked it. Something about him didn’t just make me hot, it made me want to know more. As he pushed his body into mine, I found myself melting under him. Damn, he was good.

“You were.”

“Let me do better than that.”

He snaked his arm around my waist, pulling me tight against him before he guided me to my living room sofa. He caressed my curves as he laid me down and pulled off my shirt to reveal my voluptuous breasts. He licked his way down my body, taking special time for each breast. He swirled his tongue into my belly button, and gripped my hips. As he reached my panty line, he stuck his tongue right under the waistband, the nearness of his tongue to my wetness driving me crazy.

“Do it already!” I whispered hastily.

“Ooh, I like a feisty girl.” He chuckled.
