“Look I think I know more about a vampire’s feelings than you do.”

“Tell me right now Ethan or I am going.”

“Then you must go… as I cannot truthfully say those words”

Tears sprung into her eyes. Her attempt at emotional blackmail had backfired rather badly.

She got up, left the media room and gathered her bag and clothes. She changed and left the apartment. She walked out of the front door of the house and down the long winding driveway.  Tears ran down her cheeks as she walked. She looked behind her… he wasn’t following her. Perhaps that was for the best. How could it end like this? She broke into a fast run.

She opened the smaller door next to the main gates and once outside she took out her phone and called a cab to collect her from the hotel a little further down the main road. She had seen it when they arrived.

She picked her way down the side of the dark country road, rushing along as fast as she could, the only light coming from the moon and the occasional passing car… she couldn’t stop sobbing her heart out.

This wasn’t what she wanted. He had just told her he would never ever really love her. She was just his plaything after all. Just a sexy toy… that was all she was….

Chapter 40

Ethan lay still on the recliner thinking for some time.

How did he allow that to happen? She had gone. She really had left the house. He waited for her to come back, but she didn’t. His mind went into shock and a pain stabbed at his heart. She couldn’t do this. Not leave him like this. But he could not give her what she wanted, could he? He was a vampire and he could not love her like a human… not ever… Vampires were cold emotionally, driven by special needs and desires….but he must get her back… talk to her more, make her understand and see sense….  He noticed a few of her long fair hairs were on her chair and he picked them up and held them up next to his face. Her scent was wonderful to him, like life itself.

She could be in danger out there, late at night, walking down the road on her own….

He arose from the recliner, left the media room and finally set off in pursuit of her at very high speed.

He could see her walking some distance ahead in the semi darkness… her hair whipping in the wind… she was near the hotel.  A cab pulled up to her side and she got in.

Damn, he was just a moment too late!

He made his way back and got into his car. She would be going home… he was sure of that.

As he drove to her house he wondered what he could do to change her mind….. he had wanted to be honest with her… It would have been easier to have told her when she asked at the start….but that would have been a lie. But it seemed he would have to lie in the end, there was only one thing she wanted and he couldn’t give her that. His heart was twisting inside of him, causing him pain. He did not want to lose her. He needed to be very clever and careful. His heart hurt some more as he thought of her lovely face, her soft fragrant body and the taste of her divine blood. He wished his heart didn’t hurt so. He could not do without her. If he had to beg at her feet, he would.

Serena arrived home and poured herself a large glass of wine which she drunk very quickly to dull her pain. She undressed and put on her dressing gown. She threw away the half cooked meal Adam had started and opened the window for a moment to freshen the room.  Adam’s last meal that he never ate…. He would never want meals again. She cast a glance at his room. Would he ever sleep in there again, in this flat with her? Tears were running down her face. She wandered into her room and stood looking out of her window blindly… thinking…. wondering about her life, Adam’s life … how it had all changed now. He was there and she was not.

It should have been the other way round.

Her heart hurt some more as saw Ethan’s car appear below. She didn’t want another heavy discussion about love. He got out and came to the door and pressed the buzzer. She picked up the entry phone looking at his face in the camera… what was the point of this visit… it would resolve nothing….

“Ethan, go home, I want to be alone just now”

“Let me come in for 5 minutes, that’s all”

“What is the point… you’ve said your piece and I’ve said mine. That’s it…”

“Please, I beg you, let me see you, just for a moment”

“Okay….you have just 5 minutes.”

He stood in her flat for the first time. This was her special place.

“So…?” she started

He pulled her to him and kissed her.  She started to cry again.

“Ethan, this isn’t doing us any good… No matter what we do in here… I know your feelings now… that they will never change. So it’s pointless. It breaks my heart. But I can’t carry on with you.”

“I want to say it now”

“Ethan you can say it all you like … you won’t mean it. I know you won’t. You just want me to go back there and be your little sex mate. That’s all it is to you, isn’t it? A bit of company in bed and a nice blood match.”

“No, it isn’t like that at all. I have very strong feelings for you. I can’t stand the thought of losing you. You must be mine.”

“I must be yours? No, I must not! The only way that will happen is if you love me. And you don’t, won’t, and can’t…. We should say our goodbyes now.”

A rising panic took hold of him. She really meant it…  He took her hand stoking it gently.

“I am going to say it anyway. I think I do really mean it Serena.” He persisted desperately. “There is no one in this entire world who I think about so often. You are in my dreams. Your blood is in my veins. I want you, I need you. You are the most wonderful thing that has happened to me in a very, very long time. Serena I love you more than life itself.”

“That actually sounded quite convincing Ethan.  Why couldn’t you have said all this before.…you told me you never would… what’s changed?”

“I can’t lose you… you are everything to me. I would die without you, I almost did, didn’t I? …. and I only just found out…”

“You just found out? All that time we were in your house together… everything that has happened….all that incredibly intimate time with me… and you just found out you love me…. Here in my hallway?”

“No… I just found out I love you when you left me. It frightens me. You are frightening me now. You have my heart in your hands. What are you going to do with it Serena, tell me?”

“I frighten you do I… well that’s funny isn’t it? Little 21 year old Serena Green frightening 182 year old multi millionaire vampire CEO Ethan Karrigan…”

“You are scaring me to death Serena…”

“Ethan, please!”

“I love you and you truly scare me to death”

“Stop it!”

She took his hand and led him into the living room. She couldn’t take him to her bedroom. The last time he saw her bed he was not happy.  She pulled him down on the sofa and sat facing him on his lap.

“Let’s start our earlier conversation again….” She began.  “You said… ‘Say it…Say you love me, Serena’ if I remember correctly”

“I did”

“I love you Ethan”

She kissed him passionately. She pulled back and sat waiting patiently. His eyes shone brightly with triumph.

“I love you Serena.”

They kissed some more. It felt like a very romantic vampire moment in time for them both.

“There. We’ve both said it and meant it. Haven’t we? I love you very much Ethan…you are everything to me too. Take me back to yours and prove it to me some more… I need to be utterly convinced if I am going to turn for you…. And Ethan, we must both say it every day…  Every day forever….”

Epilogue

He had played that really rather well, he thought….

And he’d made her say it very quickly. Love was so very important to humans… She would turn and be his forever now….

He would never let this beautiful blood match go that easily…

He would do and say anything to keep her.

He had high expectations for her. New plans for them both. He wanted to run his own house with Serena at his side. He just needed to work out how to extricate himself from Father… He needed to divide up their wealth somehow. Most of it belonged to him. He had worked hard to accumulate such a fortune…  She had no idea just how much he was worth.

It was time he moved on. He wanted to be completely in charge of his destiny.

He wanted to give her the whole world, his world.

She would be such a good asset for his future business. She was beautiful, highly intelligent and had a very modern approach that he so desperately needed  in his rapidly expanding empire.

He very much wanted to mate with her too….all the time, in fact.

He needed her to change quickly… she hadn’t seen all he had to offer yet and he was aching for it to go so much further…

His heart felt very happy right now, filled to the brim with strong burning feelings for her, the bonding was almost complete in his mind….

He did not yet recognise what he felt so strongly was in fact love.

He must think she was a little simple, she thought…playing these little love power games with her…

Despite his age and experience he didn’t understand women at all!

Her intuition was strong, even as inexperienced as she was and she was very clever…

She would work on him subtly and she would make him say it every day until his vampire heart understood he felt love for her without question and this rather pointless denial ended.

She had the feeling that vampire love was really much stronger than the human kind, whatever he said. Everything else about him was stronger, more powerful and more sensitive, why shouldn’t love be the same?

She would only consider turning for him when her plan was complete…

It shouldn’t take too long….She could already see it written in his eyes… he was hovering on the very edge…

After that there were some other things she would need to raise with him…. in her own subtle and clever way.

Neither of them knew it yet but he really should be scared of her…. she was far, far more than just his  blood match.
