“Shit,” Patrick finally said.

“Who threw a shirt in my fireplace?”

“You’ve got two firefighters here,” Sam said. “Nothing to worry about.”

Katie just sighed, feeling to contented and relaxed to argue.

A week later, they were having a quiet Friday night in the common room of the fire station, just the three of them, Sam and Katie arguing over the Risk board, Patrick lying on the couch, playing the Xbox. He’d lost Risk already, about two hours earlier.

In fact, Katie strongly suspected that he’d lost intentionally, and that he’d only agreed to play because Sam and Katie were so excited about it. He seemed to approach the actual game as an exercise in pain.

“Oh, hey, Katie,” he said from the couch, shooting a zombie. “The firemen’s ball is in a few weeks—”

“Will you go with me?” Sam jumped in, cutting Patrick off.

“Dick!” exclaimed Patrick, sitting up on the couch, the game paused.

Sam grinned. “I asked first.”

“You
are
being a dick,” Katie pointed out.

“And she’s got a PhD, so if she thinks you’re being a dick,” Patrick said. “Anyway. Katie, will you accompany me to the firemen’s ball?”

“Or me?” said Sam.

She sighed and rolled her eyes.

“You guys, the entire point is I don’t have to choose,” she said. “Look, technically I’ll go with one of you, but dance with both.”

The men looked at each other.

“Okay,” said Sam.

Patrick grinned. “That’s fine,” he said, and laid back down on the couch.

Katie and Sam went back to their rules discussion.

“Fine,” she said. “I think you win.”

He leaned over the table, knocking over some pieces.

“What do I win?” he asked.

An explosion sounded from the TV, and Patrick’s head popped up over the back of the couch.

“I also won,” he said.

Katie laughed and kissed Sam on the lips.

“Three guesses,” she said.
