François Bordes used this term to refer to roughly worked pointed bifaces of Middle Palaeolithic type. More generally it is applied as a morphological term to describe long pointed bifaces with slightly curved sides and a well-made tip.
field barn
[MC].
An agricultural storage building that is situated amongst the fields it serves rather than within the farmstead. This kind of structure is most common when cultivated land is situated well away from settlement areas.
field evaluation

field notes

Records of observations or interpretations made during fieldwork or direct engagement with the archaeological resource. May include written notes, photographs, drawings, tape-recordings, video film, etc.
field school
[Or].
A formal training programme in archaeological methods run under the supervision of trained professionals, usually as part of a major research project. Also known as a training excavation, but many field schools cover surveying, geophysical surveys, finds processing, and a range of other work that complements the excavations themselves.
field survey
[Te].
A general term used to describe the discovery, mapping, and non-destructive investigation of archaeological remains in open country. The discovery of sites may involve walk-over surveys and systematic sampling of various kinds using direct observations,

, and the ground-checking of information from aerial surveys and remote sensing. Mapping work will be done using one of a range of surveying techniques from simple sketching through to detailed measured drawings of earthworks and structures using a
TOTAL STATION
or GPS. Non-destructive investigations mainly draw on geophysical surveys, geochemical studies, and detailed surface collection where sites lie under disturbed ground.
