Aspero, Peru
[Si].
A Preceramic Stage ceremonial centre on the coastal plain near the mouth of the Rio Supe, dating to
c.
2800 bc. The complex comprises perhaps as many as seventeen platform mounds. Each mound was built in stages, having two or three steps or tiers rising to about 10m above the surrounding ground surface. On the summit was a masonry structure comprising a series of rooms or cells of different sizes, each elaborated with niches and adobe friezes. Dedicatory caches are found within the structures, including feathers, cotton, string and cane objects, clay figurines, wooden bowls, and carved wooden items.
One mound, Huaca de los Idolos, measures 30m by 50m in plan and 10m high. A large settled population must have lived in the Supe Valley round about.
