ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ross Klein
was introduced to cruising when as a youngster his parents took him on cruises to Hawaii (1963) and Alaska (1968). He took his first cruise as an adult in 1974 on the Mikhail Lermontov — the first year a Russian ship embarked from a US port. In 1992, he returned to cruising and in the next 9 years took 30 cruises comprising approximately 300 days. With each cruise he gained a deeper understanding of the cruise industry and its well-concealed underside.

Ross's education is in sociology and social work. He worked as a social group worker following completion of his Masters degree in social work in 1974. In 1981 he completed his PhD in sociology with a focus on nonviolent alternatives to war. He is presently on the faculty of the School of Social Work, Memorial university of Newfoundland.

Ross lives with his partner in St. John's, Newfoundland. He is a board member of Family Service Canada and an advocate for change in the cruise ship industry. He no longer takes cruises, preferring land-based vacations instead — at least until the cruise industry cleans up its act.
