“Good thing I’m not FBI.”
I’m silent as she pushes a folder toward me. The top half of a circular logo peeks out: Central Intelligence Agency. “Yevgeny Andreev was only the tip of the iceberg, Anne.”
Her tongue rolls over the syllables of Andreev’s Russian name perfectly. I wonder if she looked at my transcript and noticed how many different languages I’ve taken. A chill rolls through me, making me feel even more exposed. Almost as if this woman might know things about me that I don’t even know myself.
For once in my life, I’m completely speechless.
“This is not a glamorous opportunity.” The woman’s eyes are serious now. “If you complete the very rigorous program, and your training, your family and closest friends won’t be allowed to know what you do. Life as you know it will be over.”
I don’t say it, but that life has been over for a while. I reach for the folder.
Because some bridges have to be burned down before they can be built again.
