When asked if she would be seen more often outside London, she replied: “We’ll see. I’ll have to make sure I don’t tread on anyone’s toes. William and Harry really enjoy their history lessons because they like learning about their relations.”

“My dearest wish is that Charles and I will be able to find a way to do more things together with our sons.”

Two months before her death, Diana was asked whether she would ever marry again. “Who would take me on? I have so much baggage. Anyone who takes me out to dinner has to accept the fact that their business will be raked over in the papers.
Photographers will go through their dustbins. I think I am safer alone.”

On the increasing speculation that she would marry Dodi al-Fayed, whom she’d been seeing with increasing frequency: “I haven’t taken such a long time to get out of one poor marriage to get into another.”

Speaking from a motor launch to so-called Rat Pack paparazzi in Saint-Tropez, France: “You are going to get a big surprise. William and Harry have told me to find peace and harmony in my life, and that is what I am going to do. I am going to make an announcement that will shock you all. I am going to make an announcement in two weeks that will put an end to all this. And, boy, will you be surprised.”

“It’s time I started getting a life. [Dodi] is the man who will take me out of one world into another.
I trust him. I think he can provide everything I need.”

She would become annoyed when Dodi called and recited a list of presents he had purchased for her. She told her friend Rosa Monckton: “That’s not what I want, Rosa. It makes me uneasy. I don’t want to be bought. I have everything I want. I
just want someone to be there for me, to make me feel safe and secure.”

“I am very upset at the criticism of him [Dodi]. I’ve known him for years and we have been close friends for the last five. It was all cleared with Buckingham Palace long ago. It’s very difficult for me and the boys to have a private holiday. We couldn’t sit in Kensington Palace all summer.”
