Epilogue

The first delicate flakes of winter snow drifted down from the dark sky as Sophia and Van climbed to the top of Trinity Rock. They faced each other on either side of the portal, travelling as man and woman this time. Mortals. Sophia was still weak in her body but her and Van’s successful Pure Soul quest had strengthened their relationship beyond all expectation, bonded them together with a love stronger than any supernatural power could be.

But Oak Tree Forest was the land of werewolves and vampires, and neither Van nor Sophia knew whether a mortal man and woman could survive long enough to reach Virgin Island, let alone overcome whatever challenges would follow. But it was Sophia’s destiny to become The Mother. She knew in her heart, her soul, right down to her bones that she could do this. She would lift the curse of every werewolf, release them from lives as shadow-hearts and send them blinking into the sunlight once more. She
had
to believe it, they both did. There was nothing else they could do.

It was also her duty to see this through to the end. She hadn’t forgotten the werewolves that died while saving her from the Colti vampires during that first fateful dash through the woods to Virgin Island. Their souls needed avenging, and what better way to do it than achieve the very thing that they were escorting her to do?

Gnawing doubts lingered. Would she and Van ever see Fir Lodge and their family and friends again? What would they have to go through in order to make this dream a reality? Reversing Van’s curse was a terribly difficult thing to do, and he was just one lone werewolf. She couldn’t even imagine how challenging it was going to be to do the same for thousands.

It boosted Sophia’s spirits to think that Wilbur was their ally on this side of the portal. He was a clever, resourceful man, and most important of all, he understood. He had a secret too, and if anything happened to them in Oak Tree Forest, she trusted him to manage the fallout. She closed her eyes and familiar, beloved faces began to flash past her eyelids. Her parents, Jane, Willow… Perhaps she’d never see them again. The thought squeezed her chest like a vice and she opened her eyes quickly, fearing what her body might do next if she continued to picture her loved ones.

So, as she held Van’s hands across the portal and braced herself for the torturous journey ahead, Sophia didn’t allow herself to linger on what might be. Instead she brought into her mind a book she’d recently read and connected with. It had said that the present moment is all that exists; the past is nothing but a collection of thoughts in our heads and the future hasn’t happened yet. All that is certain is this moment, right now.

Right now, Van’s hands were warm in hers and the snowflakes were like icy kisses on her nose and cheeks. She looked into Van’s eyes, the man she adored and the one who’d stand as a mortal beside her in Oak Tree Forest, with steely determination and burning love spurring them forward. Slowly, they began to fade.
