“Baby,” A voice called out to her. “Olivia, wake up.”

Olivia eyes snapped open as the tears continued to run down her cheeks. She looked around the room noticing that she was still sitting in the hospital chair next to Zay’s bed. Her heart was rummaging inside of her chest and her hands were trembling uncontrollably. When she looked at Zay he was sitting up and reaching for her hand.

“Babe, you okay?” He questioned. “You’re sweating and crying like you were having a nightmare.”

She looked down and picked up the magazine that she was reading and put it on the table beside her. “You don’t know the half of it,” she said while quickly getting up from the seat and immediately hugging him. It felt good to have his arms around her. “What time is it? I don’t even remember dozing off.”

“It’s six-thirty in the morning. You woke me up making noises in your sleep. When I looked over at you, your lips were trembling and tears were running down your face. I don’t know what you were dreaming about, but I’m glad that it was just a dream.”

“Me, too.” Olivia said feeling relieved.

Zay kissed her on the neck then the cheek. “It’s okay, babe. We’re okay.” He assured her.

“Thank God,” she said kissing him softly on the lips.

“It was just a bad dream.” He assured her. Having her there made things so much easier. Even though it was her husband that shot him, he still loved her. Mark wasn’t the man for her and God saw fit that they lived so he could step up to be the man in her life that would wholeheartedly appreciate her.

“I love you,” Zay whispered in her ear.

“I love you, too.” Olivia said back. She was happy to be able to feel him and know that he was okay. “I'm sorry I got you in this.”

Zay grabbed the back of her head. “Shhh...” He hushed her, and then stared directly in her eyes. “Look at me.” He said while holding her face between his hands. “What has happened is behind us now. I'm good and you’re good.”

Olivia nodded her head slightly, and then she whispered, “You know I love you so much. I hate it took this for me to really wake up and see where I belonged.”

Zay smiled, pushing her bangs out of her face. “And where is that?”

“With you,” she answered.

“You know what to say,” he teased. “I love you, too and together we’re gonna be just fine.”

Olivia's heart rate had slowed its beat and she felt like she was back to normal. She was still hurting like hell on the inside, but for the most part she knew her and Zay had great chemistry and a bond like no other.

She kissed him gently on his lips, making sure she truly wasn't dreaming. Feeling him kiss her back assured her that it was indeed real. Their tongues tangoed for a couple of minutes. The feeling was unexplainable and at the moment she wanted nothing more than to be with him and only him. She knew that she had some things to square away with Mark. She didn’t know how that would turn out, but she wanted it to be over and the sooner the better.

Chapter 7

It was now around eight in the morning and Olivia was awakened by Zay’s parents coming in the room.

Zay’s father, the man that had raised him, looked straight at the hospital bed where Zay was still sleeping. He noticed Olivia, but that wasn’t his concern at the moment. Olivia sat up and rubbed her eyes. With a pleasant smile, she spoke since she’d already figured out who they were.

“Hi,” she said. “I’m Olivia, Zay’s friend.” Saying girlfriend at the moment didn’t seem right unless it was coming out of Zay’s mouth while introducing her.

“Good Morning,” Georgette responded with a hesitant smile back. “I’m Xavier’s mom and this is my husband, his father, Charley.”

“How are you?” Charley pleasantly asked.

“I’m good,” Olivia responded.

“How is he doing?” Charley pondered as he looked over at his son.

“He’s a lot better,” Olivia responded. Charley touched the small of his wife's back insisting that she go over to see their son first. She walked straight over to him as Charley stood behind her in a nonchalant demeanor. Zay’s mother had the saddest look in her eyes as she watched him in silence. She leaned down to hug him, then her eyes filled with tears instantly. Instead she kissed him on the forehead and then she sat down on the foot of the bed beside him.

“How long has he been sleep?” She asked Olivia.

“He’s been sleep for a few hours. The nurses have been giving him pain medicine and it makes him sleepy. They feel that his body needs rest in order for him to recuperate adequately.”

Charley nodded his head. “I understand,” he said walking over and kissing Zay on the top of his head. Olivia smiled. Seeing how loving his parent’s were definitely gave her insight about the gentleman that they’d raised.

Olivia’s phone buzzed with an incoming text message and she quickly pulled it out of her purse to check it. She opened up the blinking envelope on her phone to read the message.

Hey Sis, I’m over mom’s house. When I was leaving Dillon was headed to the hospital. Will you be coming over here? Mom is cooking a big breakfast. Zoe

Olivia looked over at Zay’s parents as they watched her. She nervously smiled. “It’s my sister.” She said like she had to explain then she messaged her back.

I’ll be there shortly. O’

At that moment, Dillon entered the room with a big smile on his face. “Hey mom and dad,” he spoke. His feet didn’t stop until he’d made it to his mom, giving her a loving hug and a kiss on the cheek. Then he turned to his father also giving him a loving hug.

“Hey son,” his father spoke.

“Dillon, where have you been?” Georgette asked. “You should’ve been here with your brother.”

“For what and be a third wheel?” Dillon teased as he glanced over at Olivia. “I see that y’all have met Zay’s significant other.”

“Yeah, we met her.” Georgette responded. “She is a pretty girl.”

“Thanks,” Olivia said as Georgette softly smiled at her. She’d known a little something about Olivia, but not much. The last person that she’d heard Zay was actually fooling around with was Angel. And, even though he didn’t give her that information, Angel made sure that she did.

“How did he do through the night?” Dillon asked as he continued. “Laying up here with slob hanging out of his mouth,” he joked.

“There is no slob hanging out of his mouth,” Georgette said with a light grin. Dillon was always the funny one and continuously made her laugh.

“He did fairly well. He’s been sleeping most of the time, of course. Even I had finally dozed off.” Olivia responded with a shy smile.

“Son, I wanted to speak with you in private.” Charley said.

“That’s cool,” Dillon said, but before they could exit the room, Olivia stood up.

“You don’t have to leave out on my account. I’m actually heading over to my parents house now.” She said.

“Oh, your parents live here in Augusta?” Georgette questioned.

Olivia smiled as she answered. “Yes ma’am. I live here in Augusta, too.”

“Okay then,” Georgette said. “Well, it was nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you, too,” Olivia responded. This time she leaned over the bed and hugged Georgette lightly around the neck. “Nice to meet you too, Mr.-“

“You can just call me Charley.” He responded, “And, the same here.”

Olivia looked over at Zay who was still knocked out from the pain medication. “I don’t want to wake him, but would you tell him to call me later when he gets up?”

“Yes, I’ll make sure that I tell him.” Georgette said with a sincere smile. With that, Olivia kissed Zay lightly on the lips and swiftly made her exit. Since his family was there she was going to give them time alone with him. She didn’t want to feel like an intruder. Plus, when they started asking questions about what happened, she wanted to make sure that she was far away from the scene as possible.

Once Olivia had made her exit, Georgette looked back at her son. “So, is that the women that your brother has been seeing for the past few months?”

Dillon nodded his head with an unnerving smile. “Yep,” he answered.

“She seems like a sweet person.” She stated.

Dillon knew that she was only asking questions to figure out what had been going on between the two. “She is a sweet person. She’s business savvy, smart, and she loves Zay.”

Georgette glanced over at Charley who had gone over to sit in the same seat that Olivia had just gotten out of. The look she gave him told him that she wasn’t finished prying as he shook his head at her. Never did she pay him any mind if she wanted to know anything about the boys, so he’d just listen.

“Angel called me and told me that she and Olivia got into a physical altercation right after she’d made it here to see your brother.”

Dillon’s eyes widened from surprise. “Huh,” he said out of confusion. “I don’t know anything about that. When we left, Bro was here by himself.”

“Who are we?” Georgette pondered.

“Me, Olivia, and her sister, Zoe,” He answered while feeling like he was being interrogated by a Drill Sergeant.

“So, were they with you and Xavier when the shooting occurred?” She asked.

“Only Olivia was with us and even she’d just met us there.” He explained. “Her sister showed up after it had happened.”

Georgette nodded as an indication that she understood. “Hm, okay.” She said. “What do you think happened to make Angel and Olivia have a physical altercation knowing that your brother is laid up in here like this?”

Dillon sat quietly for a moment with a clueless expression on his face. “Honestly, I don’t know. But, if I had to guess, I would like to think that Angel’s sassy mouth started it. Olivia isn’t that type of person. However, if someone is pushed to that breaking point then that could explain it.”

“Angel said that she hit her first.” Georgette informed him.

“Well, think about it, mom. If she was hit first then why was she hit? A person like Olivia isn’t going to put her hands on somebody without being provoked. I know it’s been, at least, eight or nine years since you’ve been around Angel, but don’t forget who she really is.” He said knowing that Angel had been calling their mom and taking her out on lunch dates, trying to get back in good with the family.

“Oh, I’m well aware of who Angel is and what she’s about which is one reason why I keep her close.” She said to let him know that she was not slow by a long shot. It didn’t fare well with her on how things had gone down years prior with Angel and Zay’s break-up. She’d never forget how her son moped around for the longest trying to get over her. That was something she’d never forget and because of that, Angel certainly wasn’t one of her favorite people, even though Angel believed otherwise.

“Long as we’re on the same page,” Dillon stated.

Charley had been quiet long enough and felt it was his turn to ask a few questions. “I just want to know what happened last night. Who shot your brother and why?” He asked calmly while folding his arms across his chest.

Dillon knew his stepfather all too well and how he was good at reading them. However, he was sticking to the same story that they'd all been going with so far. He took a deep breath and started. “Well, some nigga ran up talkin about he wanted our money. A few words were exchanged and he fired some shots. Bro got hit and Olivia was unconscious for a few minutes from falling to the ground, hitting her head. The guy seemed stunned that he’d even pulled the trigger which gave me a chance to kick the gun out of his hand and then he fled the scene.” He explained while shaking his head. “The whole thing was unexpected and very shocking, to say the least. Luckily, Bro only had a flesh wound.”

His stepfather looked him straight in the eyes as Dillon stared back at him, never breaking the stare off. Then the hard stare became somewhat softer. “So are you alright?” Charley asked.

Dillon nodded slowly, realizing that he’d gotten the picture even if he knew he was lying or not. “I'm good. I just hope this doesn't leak out and have bro all over the news and ESPN. We asked for this to be confidential since it wasn’t that serious. Hopefully, we won’t hear much else about it.”

“Well, if it does make the news it won’t be much buzz around it since your brother is okay. Thank God for that,” Charley added.

Meanwhile, Olivia was on her way over to her parent’s house. She smiled a little thinking about her encounter with Zay’s parents. It was good to finally have met them, but she was wishing that it would have been under different circumstances. As she drove to her parent’s house, one of her favorite songs by
Sevyn Streeter,
It Won’t Stop,
played on the satellite radio. She hummed the lyrics to the song as she drove. Her thoughts bounced to Mark and his whereabouts. She didn’t know what had come over him, but he’d certainly lost his mind. It was very inconsiderate of him not to call to check on her knowing what he’d done. It was the only thing that made her feel like he had some kind of vendetta towards her. Her thoughts were quickly disturbed as her cell phone started to ring. She looked over at the caller ID and instant displeasure smacked her right in the face. It was Mark calling.

Think of the devil and he calls,
she thought with a frown on her face.

“The nerve of this man,” she said just above a whisper. Without hesitating any longer, she decided to answer. “Mark, what could you possibly want calling me?”

Mark was stunned that she even answered as he sat on the phone feeling some type of way at just hearing her voice. He cleared his throat. “I, uh… I um…” He cleared his throat again. “I just wanted to make sure that you were okay.”

Olivia’s neck jerked a little like she was appalled that he’d even called her. “You want to know if I’m okay after you tried to kill me last night. You are really full of shit and not the man that I thought I knew at all.”

Mark knew that she was right. He really didn’t have a response, but he’d say something anyway. “Well, all I can say is that I’m sorry. I wasn’t in my right mind. I don’t know what made me act out in that way. Then again, I do.” He said as he thought back to how the whole thing popped off. “How long have you been seeing ol’ boy behind my back?”
