Perhaps their descendants would come here one day, many
years after they were gone, and they would ride along this winding, twisting
road to Edinburgh, passing the very spot where history was played out. And
perhaps, if they were sensitive enough and Scot enough, they would feel an
eeriness reaching out to them, and they would stop, and walk to the edge of the
cliff and look down at the churning sea below. They might wonder what had
happened here that day so long ago and why they felt as if they were standing upon
hallowed ground.
They would not hear the thundering hooves of a mighty
stallion or the cry of the seabirds overhead, nor would they catch the
reflection of sun upon a signet ring or hear the softly whispered prayers of a
woman in love. They would stand there wondering, with their faces to the sea
and their backs to the moors, never seeing a towering crag half-veiled in mist
or a flash of brilliance hovering there.
Long before she began writing novels, Elaine Coffman taught
elementary school and language and learning disabilities, never dreaming that
she would one day embark upon a new and exciting career as a novelist. Elaine
began writing in 1985 and her first book was published in 1988, and she
captured the hearts of fans everywhere when she created magnificent Mackinnon
family saga of seven books. Due to reader requests to write about their
ancestors, she is continuing with the Mackinnon – Douglas series, set in
Medieval Scotland.
Literary achievements include four nominations for RT Best
Historical of the Year, three time winner of the RT Reviewers Choice Award,
Best Western Historical of the Year, and the Maggie Award. Her books have been
selected by Doubleday Book Club and Literary Guild, and she was named one of
the top ten romance novelists by the American Library Association’s

She has

USS Constitution in Boston Harbor.
When asked why she chose to write historical romance, she
replied, “Because I have always loved history, and wondered where my ancestors
came from.” After several years of research, she traced her family back to
Charlemagne and now belongs to numerous genealogical organizations.
