Paddy
and
Meeka
continued
to
huddle
in
the
cold
cell.
Meeka
was
still
unable
to
do

wiggle
her
fingers
and
toes
and

She

Meeka

she

she’d

“Meeka,
I
wish
I
had
powers
of
my

so
I
could

Paddy
stroked
the
tangled hair
from
her
face.

“Stay

Meeka
gave
a

Please,

find
us.

She
recoiled
at
the
sight
of
Jager,
his
deco

sloughing
with
each
step

Jager let
the ring
of ke

each rusted
steel bar
as
he slowly advanced. He
s

at
them
between
the
bars,

“Such
pathetic
creatures.
Y

are
good
for
nothing
but
dinner,
but
she,
on
the

perfection.”
He
said,
pointing
his
finger
towards
Meeka.
“I

he
gloated.
“Have

Jager

scraped

the lock.

Paddy

herself
between
Meeka
and

door.
“You stay

back,”
Paddy
threatened.

Jager’s

I’ll

Paddy
shrieked
in
horror,
and
Meeka
cried
silent
tears
at
the
fu

and
fear
in
her
friend’s face.

“You are filth,
not fit for our world. I warn

hissed. Taking a
deep
breath,
she

the

Jager
stopped
and
scratched
at
his

“Tsk.”
He
sneered.

Y

do better.”

He
shoved
the
door
open
with
a
clang.
Freedom
beckoned
for
less
than
a
second
before
the
steel door
reverberated
off
the
wall
and
crashed
closed
again.

Jager
slowly

way
toward
the

them
until
he
stood

He crouched,
his
dirty
fingers finding
their
way into
Meeka’s beautiful
hair.
Instant

Paddy lunged fo

sank
her
large front

into
his
hand.

He

her
across
the
cell.

Jager
