Chapter
Eight

Dean’s lips
moved but his mouth was too dry to form words. The severity gripping Will’s
face made his pulse pound thickly in his temples and he was glad he hadn’t partaken
in the
evil-weed
. That would have
only made things worse. A seagull screeched above them, egging on the fireworks.

“You can’t be
serious,” Dean sputtered, his voice coming out much weaker than intended.

Will pressed the
cell phone tightly against his ear as it began to ring. “We don’t let dope fiends
into this family, pal!”

Ben spread his
arms out, accentuating his massive biceps with the movement. “Will, come on,
man. This is…”

Will’s heated
gaze pounced on him next, silencing Ben with their heavy weight. When someone
answered, Will turned away and started speaking into the phone. “Yeah, Evy,
it’s your father.” He paused for a second. “Well, I’ve been better. Did you
know your fiancé is a giant pothead?”

Small waves
lapped against the boat. Captain Taylor kept a close eye on Jon as a seagull
swooped down.

Will
raised
his voice. “I’m talking about catching Dean and his
friends smoking marijuana on the boat!” He
nodded,
his
searing glare back on Dean and set to high. “Listen, I drove up to surprise him
for his bachelor party but it looks like the
surprise
is on me.”

The others
exchanged troubled glances, Dean’s face wrenched with concern.

“That’s right, Evy,
your fiancé is a goddamn doper!” Will nodded some more, listening intently to
her reply. “I also caught him butt-fucking Jon in the bathroom.”

Jon’s jaw went
through the deck floor. “What!”

“That’s right,”
Will continued, “in the bathroom below deck.”

The color
drained from the captain’s leathery face.

“What the fuck,
Will!” Dean cried, planting his hands on his hips. “That is bullshit and you
know it! He’s lying, Evy!”

Will lost it and
started laughing uncontrollably, dropping the cell to his side. “I’m just
messin
with you, Deano!”

Shaun and Ben swapped
nervous looks.

Dean mopped
sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. “Jesus Christ.”

Will pointed at
him, eyes watering. “You should’ve seen the look on your face! That was classic.”

Ben rubbed his
hand back and forth across his head, exhaling a weary breath into the night.
“That is so wrong.”

Captain Taylor
arched an eyebrow at Jon, glancing at the joint in his hand.

Jon slipped him
a twenty and Taylor pocketed the cash.

“And stay
outta
my pisser!” he said, returning to the helm.

Will inhaled a
deep breath and narrowed his sunken eyes.
“Like I care if you
guys toke up a little weed.
Give the old man some credit, for God’s sake!”

“I like this
guy,” Shaun said, tipping back his beer.

Jon threw his
arms out. “Why is it I’m the one he was having gay butt sex with in the
bathroom?”

Will’s face sobered
as he considered the question.
“Because you’re tall and
slender.”

Jon violently
shook his head. “So?”

Will came over
to him and extended his hand. “You
gonna
bogart
that thing all night long or
what?”

Hesitantly, Jon passed
him the smoking
spleef
.

“Careful, Will,
that’s some heavy stuff,” Shaun warned.

Will fanned a hand
through the air at him. “You should’ve seen me back in the day, Shaun,” he
said, blowing ash from the end of the joint like a seasoned pro. “I once smoked
three joints by myself at a Winger concert.”

Ben pinched his
eyes together. “That is nothing to brag about.”

Will held out a
fist to Dean. “We good, man?”

Dean stared at
him for a moment before bumping his fist. He nodded to the joint. “You better
go easy on that. The stuff these days is way stronger than it was back when you
were wearing spandex.”

“I never wore
spandex.”

“Not what I
heard.”

Will put the
joint to his lips and inhaled, the cherry turning his face a glowing red.

“Aw hell,” Ben
muttered, cracking open a new can of beer.

Chapter
Nine

Megan tossed a strand
of straight, blond hair over the shoulder of a red dress showing off her perky breasts
and flat tummy. “You remember April,” she said, glancing at her redheaded
friend.

April smiled and
wiggled her pasty fingers at them.

Brooke stared
dully at her. “I love your Wendy’s commercials.”

April’s freckled
cheeks fell. “Huh?”

Megan kept her
focus locked on Evy. “I can’t believe we ran into you here. I hardly ever get
to go out anymore with the baby and all.”

Evy’s muscles
tensed. The mere mention of the word
baby
sent a cold shiver running down her spine. And not just any baby.
The
baby.
The very
one that had once threatened to obliterate everything she had ever wanted in a
single blow. “That’s so sad.”

Megan’s icy blue
eyes widened. “Jack is getting so big!”

“He really is,”
April verified with a series of affirmative nods. “Barely a year-old and kid’s
already walking all over the place like a little drunk person.”

Tasha’s gaze bounced
between the redhead and the blond, uncertainty swimming in her eyes.

“He’s a handful
all right,” Megan said, turning to Brooke. “I’m sure you know how babies can
be.”

Brooke clasped
her hands together on the table and lifted her chin. “Always getting into
things they shouldn’t.”

Megan’s gaze
narrowed. “But as bad as they can sometimes be, they always end up getting what
they want.”

Brooke offered a
toothy smile. “Not if you keep things
locked
up.”

Cold flashed in
Megan’s eyes. She turned her icy gaze back to Evy. “That is the God’s honest
truth. You really have to
lock
up
everything in the house or who knows what they could get their hands on.”

“Wait a minute,
this is that Megan bitch, isn’t it?” Tasha eyeballed the slender blond from her
smoky eyes to her four inch heels. “You were just talking about Dean right now weren’t
you?
About locking stuff up in the house.”

Megan paid her
no attention and kept her phony smile aimed at Evy. “He changed my life. Jack,
I mean.”

Tasha frowned.
“She’s talking about Dean again, isn’t she?”

Megan stared
hard at Evy. “I don’t know what I’d ever do without him.”

“Before ya know
it, he’ll be running for city council,” Brooke smirked.

Megan’s smile
hiccupped, shooting a dose of pleasure into Brooke’s veins. The table next to
them burst into laughter while heavy bass vibrated their drinks.

Brooke lifted
her eyebrows. “Speaking of the city
council,
how is
your father anyway? Hope he’s hanging onto the soap.”

What was left of
Megan’s smile hit the dirt. “He’s good,” she replied, hiking her purse up
higher onto her shoulder. “He could be home in time for Thanksgiving next year.”

“Next year?”
Brooke made an O-face. “Oh my, that is wonderful timing! The mall will be
looking for plenty of seasonal help by then.”

Megan turned back
to Evy, her face brightening. “I hear you’re marrying my ex-husband soon! That
is so exciting.”

April stared at
Evy, eagerly awaiting her reply.

Evy’s pulse beat
like a bass drum in her ears, rattling her bones to the core. One felt mallet
strike after the next, dizziness washed over her in cold waves.

Ex-husband
?”
Brooke scoffed,
rolling her eyes. “That marriage was about as real as your boobs.”

Megan stepped
closer to Evy, her flowery perfume stinging Evy’s eyes. “You’re a lucky girl,
Evy.” One corner of her lips pulled up into a tan cheek. “I’ll never forget how
good that beautiful man felt inside of me.” A wistful sigh crept past her lips.

Time slowed to a
crawl while Evy’s heartbeat hammered against her ribcage. Everything went into
slow-motion. Her wine glass felt like it weighed a hundred pounds, the wine
spraying Megan’s face a burgundy blur. It was over before Evy knew it. She
stared at Megan, biting back an evil grin. “Oops.”

Megan held her
arms out, staring down at her ruined dress in wide-eyed horror. She looked up,
fury and cabernet dripping from her face. “You fucking bitch!”

Chapter
Ten

The chartered
fishing boat lazily drifted along with lines cast from poles mounted around the
entire back end like insect legs. Baited hooks trolled through the darkened
water that seemed to stretch to the end of the world. It was peaceful. Dean
sucked in a deep breath of the crisp night air and released it back into the
breeze, glad to be here after all. It would have been a mistake not to have come.
He passed the joint to Ben just as a light thump hit the hull, gently rocking
the vessel.

Everyone froze.

“Did you guys
feel that?” Will’s bloodshot eyes searched their faces for validation.

“What was that?”
Ben asked with his head on a swivel.

It was
impossible to see further than twenty feet out, the sliver of moonlight about as
helpful as the pale safety lights bookending the craft.

“Something hit
the boat,” Will
said
bleakly.

Nuttin
hit the boat,” the captain said, puffing away on a thickly
rolled Swisher Sweet Perfecto. Thick smoke rolled through the open slider and
out the back of the boat.

Shaun opened a
can of beer with a hiss and leaned back in his olive colored camping chair. “You’re
just a little on the paranoid side, Will, but don’t worry, it’ll pass.”

“When?”
Will asked in a
hushed whisper, his face crimped with worry.

“Couple
hours.”

He swallowed
thickly, his knee rapidly bouncing up and down. “I’m more nervous than a
cucumber on a pickle farm.”

Yo
, Captain Jack Sparrow!”
Jon shouted,
stretching his gangly arms back. “When the hell are we going to catch
something? It’s been over an hour now.”

“I know a spot,
lad,” Taylor replied, slowly motoring his way toward the state of Michigan.

Jon pinched his
eyes tighter. “Hey, where are you from anyway?”

Taylor threw a
quick look over his shoulder. “Madison,” he said, turning back to the water.

Jon frowned. “
Madison
?”

“How far out are
we?” Dean asked.

“Few miles,”
Captain Taylor said over the swishing sound the fishing lines were making as
they dragged through the water.

“I’m not getting
a signal!” Will’s cell phone cast an eerie gloom across his face. He looked up,
gravity pulling on his features, dark rings circling his eyes. “We’re all
doomed.”

Dean laughed and
passed him a cold beer. “I told you that stuff was potent.”

Will stared at
his hand, flexing his fingers in and out. “My hands feel like Ronald McDonald
hands.”

Jon grinned. “You
hit that joint way too many times.”

Will’s eyes
rose, his jaw hanging on a loose hinge.
“Which one?”

This elicited a
burst of laughter from the group which tapered off into another round of
complacent stillness. The lines swooshed. The motors hummed. Their eyes met in
the dim light. Something jumped out of the water next to them and slapped back
down. The boat kept moving, quiet settling in like a cold fog as the
temperature continued to drop like it always did at night on the lake.

Shaun unzipped a
duffel bag and pulled out a black North Face. “Colder than witch’s tit out here,”
he said, slipping into the wind jacket.

“Can I tell you
guys something?”

They turned to
Jon, his gaunt face pale in the yellow light.

He leaned
forward, nervously turning a can of beer in his hands. “Pam and I…had a
threesome with one of her friends last night.”

The boat rocked
from side to side as another cloud of cigar smoke drifted over them.

“What?” Shaun
cried, slicing the quiet in two. “And you’re just telling us about this now?”

“It just
happened last night.”

“For the love of
God, let the man speak!” Will’s eyes locked onto Jon. “I get stuck watching
HGTV and cooking shows every night.”

“Guy
or girl?”
Dean asked.

Jon flattened
his lips, clearly not finding humor in the question. “Some girl named
Kiley
I’d never met before.”

“Hot?” Shaun
said.

“Super
hot
blondie
with
tig
ole
bitties
.”
Jon cupped an imaginary set of massive breasts
and made them bounce. “It was insane!”

The captain
glanced over his shoulder and exhaled another gray plume.

Jon returned his
attention to the beer can in his hands. “I never even saw it coming.”

“How did that go
down?” Dean took a long drink, studying Jon out the corner of his eye.

“We ended up
back at my crib after the bars and the next thing you
know,
we were playing spin the Patron bottle around the coffee table.”

“Wow,” Ben
laughed, lighting up a smoke and exhaling into the night. “That’s old school
right there.”

“Suddenly, all
of us were down to our underwear. No tops, just bottoms.”

“Go on,” Will
said, taking an eager gulp of beer.

“I mean, it was
a straight up tie.” A smile wormed across Jon’s lips as he studied his can
through far-off eyes. “And, of course, the bottle lands on me next.”

Shaun slowly
shook his head. “Oh, I hate that.”

“So I stand up
and the next thing I know,
Kiley
is crouched down in
front of me on her knees, her fingers curled just inside the elastic waistband
of my drawers.”

Will
swallowed
hard.
“Sweet mother of pearl.”

“Where’s Pam?”
Shaun asked.

“Sitting
there on the couch in her red panties, just watching.”

“Then what
happened?” Ben asked, taking a long drag off the cigarette that made his face
glow red.

“Then…
Kiley
slowly inched my underwear down.”

“Boxers
or briefs?”

Jon looked up to
meet Will’s inquisitive gaze. “Boxer briefs.”

Will smiled. “Nice.”

“Anyway, my
boner pops out and smacks her right in the face.”

Shaun tipped his
head back and laughed. “Shut the fuck up!”

“Almost took out
an eye!” Jon wet his whistle and wiped beer from his lips with the sleeve of
gray
hoodie
.
“Huge, giant dick.”

“Okay, we get
it,” Dean said.

“So
Kiley
looks back at Pam, like, ya know, getting her
approval before going any further.”

“Damn,” Shaun
murmured, crossing his legs and wagging a penny loafer through the air. “That’s
some respect right there.”

“What’d Pam say?”
Will asked.

“Pam didn’t say
anything. She just slid a hand down her panties and I was like oh hell no!”

Captain Taylor
glanced back at them, smoke seeping from his bearded lips.

“Don’t stop now,”
Shaun implored.

“So then
Kiley
turns back around to face my
ginormous
cock head on. She grabs it with a firm grip and starts jerking me off with both
hands.”

“Both
hands!”
Dean snickered, swapping a dubious look with Shaun. “Whatever, man.”

Shaun smiled,
shaking his head. “Jon, you need a checkup from the neck up.”

Jon ignored them
and kept spilling his guts. “Suddenly, she wraps her lips around it and starts
making like a Dyson.”

A heavy frown
slipped over Ben’s face.
“Dyson?”
His face relaxed. “Never
mind, I get it.”

Dean laughed,
covering his eyes with a hand.
“No way.”

“I shit you not,
man! I took turns banging both of them all night long.”

Will studied Jon
through wide eyes. “You get any of this on video?”

“No,” Jon lied.

Dean swallowed a
cold drink of beer. “So where’d everyone end up sleeping?”

“Eventually, we
all crashed in my bed with me in the middle.” Jon tipped his
can
back and drained it. “When we woke up this afternoon,
Kiley
was gone and things were a little weird between Pam
and
I
.”

“What’d she
say?” Shaun asked him.

“That’s just it,
she didn’t
say
anything. She acted
like nothing had happened.” Jon stared off into the night, narrowing his vacant
gaze.

“Are you
bullshitting us?” Dean asked.

“I’m not lying.”

Dean glanced at
the others. “So where do you go from here with Pam? Just act like it never
happened?”

“That’s why I
need your advice.”

“I wouldn’t
do
anything,” Will said, cracking open
another one of Shaun’s beers. “If she wants to act like it never happened, then
that’s what you do.”

“You think?”

Ben nodded his
agreement with his father-in-law. “She’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. By day, she’s
a mild mannered health inspector, at night she turns into some turbocharged
sex-fiend.”

Jon rubbed his
chin. “Yeah, I guess so.”

“You’re looking
at this all wrong, Jon.” Shaun leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees.
“You get the best of both worlds here. You’re locked down with a hot, sweet
girl on movie night, but on party nights you get to bang other chicks.”

The captain
laughed hard, drawing their attention.

Jon lowered his
voice, his eyes going distant again. “There was one point at four in the morning
when I had
Kiley
bent over...”

A loud honk made
everyone jump. They turned to see Captain Taylor flash a searchlight three
times at a green dot off in the distance. The approaching vessel honked back
and flashed its lights in return.

Dean sat up
straighter in the camping chair, squinting across the water. “Who the hell is
that?”

Shaun and Jon
traded knowing looks while Will pulled out a shiny Colt Python from his
backpack.

“Whoa!” Shaun
cried, holding his hands up. “Why does he have a gun?”

Will popped the
cylindrical chamber open and slammed it shut again.
“Could be
Somali pirates.”

Jon’s face
soured.
“On Lake Michigan?”

“No guns on the boat!”
Captain Taylor barked, killing the engine and plunging them into an eerie
silence. The distant sound of music floated in on the air, followed by the
unmistakable sound of giggling.

Dean turned to
Shaun, a heavy glower straining his face.

Shaun held his
palms out. “What?”

“What the hell
is this, Shaun?”

Captain Taylor rotated
the spotlight and lit up a red ski boat with a wakeboard rack running over the
top like a roll bar, Robin
Thicke
blaring from their
sound system. A large bearded man in a cut off Packers shirt waved a meaty arm
as he piloted the vessel. Two young girls in skimpy bikinis stood behind him
and waved as well, hanging onto each other for support with cans of Heineken in
their hands.

“Oh, shit,” Ben
grumbled.

“Hey y’all!” a
pretty girl with short, blond hair yelled out. “Somebody call for search and
rescue?”

Shaun stood up,
swaying a little as he found his legs.
“Thought we were going
to have a circle-jerk out here all night, boss!”

The bearded man
pulled smoothly alongside Cassandra and tossed Jon a rope. “Sorry, I got tied
up.”

“I bet you did,”
Jon smiled, wiggling his fingers at the girls and pulling another bout of
giggles from them.
“Ladies.”

“Permission to
come aboard?” a brunette with long hair and giant boobs asked coyly.

Captain Taylor
nudged Jon out of the way and took off his hat, flashing a rat’s nest of white
hair and a crooked smile.
“Aye!”
He extended his hand
and helped her
aboard,
eye-fucking her the entire way
before doing it all over again with the short blond.

The brunette
stumbled in her clear, high heels and fell into Dean. “Oops,” she laughed,
bracing herself with a hand against his chest. Slowly, she looked up into his
eyes like she had just slammed into a mighty oak. “Thank you, tall, dark and
gorgeous. I’m Kat.”

She held out her
hand but Dean didn’t take it. He glanced at Will, mind reeling. This wasn’t
happening. Maybe Will wasn’t the only one who had smoked too much of the
whacky-
tobacky
. A whiff of heavy perfume wafted over
him, pulling him back to reality. Not only was this happening, but it was
happening with Evy’s dad as an eye witness.
