“Seriously?”

“Hey, I’m a tourist. It’s my first time in New York City.”

“Okay. You can be a tourist today.” Maya wrapped her arm around Shannon’s waist and pulled her closer. “But get it out of your system, because we’re going to make a New Yorker out of you.”

Shannon smiled and kissed Maya’s cheek. “I don’t even know what that means.”

“It means, only one trip to the statue.”

“Until my daughter comes to visit.”

“Are you sure I can’t interest you in a tour of my apartment instead, specifically the bedroom?”

“Is it a private tour?”

“Very private.”

“I’m in.” Shannon strode to the curb and stuck her hand out to hail a passing cab. When one stopped, she jerked the door open and said, “Get in.”

Maya complied. And when Shannon slid in beside her, she murmured, “That was hot. I’ll make a city girl out of you, yet.”

“Just don’t think I’m forgetting about the statue, or the Empire State Building, or Times Square.”

“We’ll see it all. Don’t worry. We can do anything we want to.” For the first time in Maya’s life she truly understood what those words meant. She’d had the means to be free for years, and now she finally had a reason.
