“This is where a lot of the main buildings are.” I say as we turn onto Center St.

She’s looking out the window and taking everything in. We pass Highland Apts. and I tell her the MC owns it. On the other side of the street is the Courthouse. On the same side of the street on the next block is The Harlan Bank. On the other side of the Street is Harlan Vinyl Records and Leelee’s Bookstore. The Next block down is where The Old Pool Hall and Margie Grand Theater is located. Across the Street from them is Ackley’s Cafe and Hotel. We go down one more block and Harlan Elementary School is on left at the end of the street. We get them into the school where we give the receptionist their manuscripts and fill out all the paperwork. We walk them to their classroom and meet their new teacher. “Do you want a tour of the Mining Company?” I ask as we get back into the car.

We spend the next couple of hours walking around the company. We head inside and I show her the offices and the meeting rooms. I introduce her to my secretary and I can see the shock on Tori’s face when she meets my woman. I knew she had a crush on me and I make a mental note that I may have to move her to a different department. “I don’t want to be disturbed until 11:30.” I say to Tori as we walk into my office.

We walk hand in hand to the door and I open it so we can walk through. I look at my office from her perspective. I know she can see it looks a lot like my home office. I show her the bathroom off to the side and the closet that holds clothes for when I go into the mine shafts and my suits.

“Did you sleep here often or something?” She asks skeptically.

I take her to the door on the other side of the bathroom. The door opens up to a bedroom with a king size bed. She looks at me and I know the next question and I just wait for it.

“I bought the company with my trust fund and inheritance from my parents and grandparents. I hired some amazing people that taught me what I needed to learn. I graduated from college two years ago.” I tell her.

I open the door and Captain looks up from his computer and smiles. Lyric looks at him and then realizes who she’s seeing.

“Papaw what are you doing here?”

“When your man bought this place he was looking for someone to hire with experience and knowledge. We started talking one day at Mag’s Bar over a beer and he was telling me that he couldn’t find anyone for the position he needed. The people he talked to just laughed because they saw a young kid. I told him that I would help him get his company running. Show him what he needed to do and learn. I also told him I would help him run the business while he was still in school. We shook hands and I showed up here the following Monday. I told him that I own the other side of the road and hill.

“You own the MC?” He asked with a stunned expression.

“I didn’t mean any disrespect and I understood if you don’t want the job.” He apologized.

I laughed and told him to relax. I liked that he talked to me as a person and with him not knowing who I was. I also knew he wasn’t kissing my ass either. I told him I would help him. I Also told him I wanted him to prospect for the MC because we needed men like him. He told me he would be honored to prospect and well the rest is history.” He says with a smile.

“That’s a great story.” Lyric shakes her head and laughs.

Captains phone rings and he picks it up and says okay and hangs up.

“Tori just called and said it was 11:30.” He says to us.

“We’ll see you later.” Lyric goes to Papaw and gives him a hug and I shake his hand.

“Are you okay with going to Thorpe’s Office with me?” I ask as we walk out the door and making our way down the hallway.

     We leave the Mining Company and turn left onto KY-38 going west toward Harlan for about a mile and a half then turn left onto US-421 S. We go for about two and a half miles and the Miner’s Hospitals is across from Denny Ray’s Drive In. I look at Lyric and I tell her:

“We’ll bring the kids one night to watch a movie out here. I want to have date night with you out here also.” I say.

“That sounds like a wonderful idea.” She replies.

I get out of the truck and walk to her door. I open it and she grabs my hand and I help her out. We walk hand in hand to the entrance of the Hospital. “Take a seat and Kailey will come get you in a few minutes.” Lori says to us.

I’m now involved when it comes to you and that child. The test will be performed today to determine if the child is in fact Titan’s. In seventy-two hours we’ll know for sure.
