Chapter 27

Lyric

I turned the Alarm system on after Dean left because I knew I was going to be spending my evening in a nice hot bath. I went to the kitchen and started the dishwasher. I made my way up to our room to start the water for my bath. I grabbed my robe and phone so I could listen to some music while I relaxed in the in hot water. Today was a fucking stressful day. I’m happy that my man isn’t the father of Marley’s kid. I was serious when I told her I would rain hell down on her. If I have to I still will if the child belongs to any of my family members. I get undresses and I look in the mirror at myself. I don’t even recognize the person looking back at me. The person in the mirror has a glow and lightness about her that I’ve never seen before. She has happy eyes and a small smile on her face. I look at myself and think I’m grateful for running into Nic at that day. It’s changed mine and my kids’ whole life for the better. I was scared of letting Dean have my heart when I first saw him that day. He has changed his appearance but he’s fundamentally the same as he was when we were younger. I start the music and sink into the hot bath and I close my eyes as I exhale. I’m thinking about earlier today and what I said to Marley. I realize that I haven’t talked to my best friend since all this has happened. I grab the washcloth that’s on the side of the tub. I dry my hands off and grab my phone. I turn the music off and dial Jess’ number. I figure she’s just leaving the office right now. I know the crazy woman’s still at the office. That’s all she seems to do now days. The phone rings on my end three times before she answers.

“Hello Bestie.” She says to me.

“Hi sister it’s been too long since I’ve heard your voice.” I say to her.

“I’ve been working on a big case. Sorry I haven’t called in a couple of weeks. How’s my niece and nephew?”

“They’re doing great. They miss you like crazy.”

“Spill your guts lady.” She says to me.

She must have heard something in my voice. I laugh and tell her what’s happened to us in the last couple of weeks. She gets super quiet on her end.

“Are you still there?” I ask

“I’m still here.” She responds.

She asks me about Pete and that question throws me off.

“He’s my dad’s half-brother. He’s forty-three has Brown hair, Hazel eyes, light tan skin, slender, and is six feet tall.” I tell her.

“Are you okay?” I ask because she has gone quiet.

“I think Pete might be my father. There’s a Pete Thorne listed as my father on my birth certificate. When I was emancipated I tried looking for him. I didn’t even know where to start so I did a computer search. None of the Pete Thorne’s listed were who I was looking for.” She says and her response blows me away. I’m stunned for a minute

“Jess we don’t even need his DNA. His mama and half-brother are here in town. All you have to do is overnight me your hair from your scalp. Or some gum you chewed in a pill bottle or something like that.” I say to her.

“I’ve built up quite a bit of vacation time. I’ll just come there in person, crazy.” She says with a laugh.

I know she doesn’t take vacations or time off. The last time she took time off; it was for a weekend pop in for Christmas with me and the twins.

“When do you think you could be here?” I ask excitedly.

I hear her doing something on her side of the line. She tells me to give her a second. I’m excited and I hope she’ll be here by this weekend. I can’t wait to tell Dean that she might be my blood cousin. Then my thoughts are on my dad and my grandparents. Mamaw and papaw went from having no grandchildren to maybe having two.

“I can’t fly out for another month. I’ve already booked the flight though. I’ll land in Knoxville, TN.” She tells me after a minute.

I give a little scream of excitement and next thing I know Titan has busted the door down with a gun in his hand. He’s looking for someone that’s not in here with me. I really scream and Jess starts screaming on her end.

“What’re you screaming about?” Dean yells at me.

I have one hand on my heart and I’m trying to get my composure back. I still have Jess on the line yelling.

“What’s going on? Are you okay? Do I need to call the cops?” She says frantically.

“No don’t do that. I’m fine.” I tell Jess.

“I’m okay honey. I’ll explain everything in a minute. Please put the gun away.” I say to Dean.

He looks at me and I know I have some serious explaining to do when I get off of the phone.

“Dean heard me scream and came rushing in to kill whoever it was inside the bathroom with me.” I tell Jess.

“You’re in for in it now sister. I’m happy for you and I’ll see you in a month.” She says to me with laughter in her voice.

I tell her to text me all her flight information and she tells me she will. We tell each other that we love one another and we hang up. I get out of my bath and put my robe on. I go into the bedroom where my old man’s sitting in the chair taking his boots off.

“I love you and I’m sorry I scared you.” I say as I sit on his lap.

“What the fuck’s going on babe?” He grunts.

I start to retell the story as he puts his arms around me and I relax into him. He holds me and listens to what I have to say. When I get to the end he laughs and shakes his head.

“When will her flight information be sent to you baby?” He asks me.

I get my phone out of my robe pocket and I tell him I have it. I open the text and we see that she has sent me her itinerary.

“I’ll ask one of the old ladies to get the twins from school that day. We’ll drive down and get her.” He says to me.

I start bouncing on his lap because I’m so excited. I feel him start to get hard under my ass.

“You need to stop doing that. Be a good girl because we’re not done talking yet.” He growls in my ear.

I stop bouncing and settle back into him.

“I need to call your dad babe and give him a heads up. Your dad might want tell his parents now. He’ll probably come and get you so you can explain the situation to your mamaw and papaw. Get dressed babe.” He tells me.

I get up and go to the closet. He’s already on the phone with daddy.

“Your dad’s on his way to get you babe.” He says as he walks into the closet.

I throw on some leggings and a hoodie along with my converse. I go to the bathroom and brush my teeth and hair. I pull my hair into a messy bun. Titan comes up behind me and kisses the crook of my neck. He tells me that our whole world’s changing again. I nod confirming that he’s right. We walk down the stairs and I see dad’s truck lights as he’s pulling up. I give my man a kiss good bye.

“I won’t be gone to long honey.” I say to him.

He tells me he’ll be awake waiting for me and he loves me. I tell him I love him as I walk out the door going to dad’s truck.

“Damn baby doll we’re going to add another baby girl to the family?” Dad says as I jump into his truck.

“It looks like it dad.” I say with a laugh.

“Are you ready?” He asks me as we pull up to the big house.

“I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.” I say to him.

“Let’s go sweetheart.” He laughs.

We knock on the door and papaw opens the door and says “What’s wrong?”

“We have some news that we need to talk to you and mamma about.” Dad says.

He leads us into the living room that’s right off of the entrance. The room’s country chic. It fits both mamaw and papaw. We take a seat when mamaw comes into the room.

“What’s wrong?” Mamaw asks as she walks into the room.

“Momma, pop please sit down Lyric has to tell you something important.” Dad says to them.

They take a seats on the couch next to me. I tell them the story about my best friend Jessica. About her struggles growing up and being emancipated. How we meet and then about her leaving Kentucky and moving to Colorado. I tell them about her putting herself through Law School. How she’s a damn good Lawyer and has made a name for herself. I then retell them the conversation we had tonight. When I stop talking and come back to the here and now. I notice that it’s quiet and I look at my grandparents and mamaw is crying silent tears. I tell her that we don’t know for sure but Jess will be here in a month.

“Would you be willing to go down to Thorpe’s Office so that they can swab your mouth and Jess’ for the DNA test.” I ask.

Mamaw says of course she’ll do the DNA. She has tears streaming down her face and takes a shuddering breath as she looks to papaw.

“We just got one granddaughter and know we’re about to get another.” She says to papaw.

Papaw has tears in his eyes and picks her up and puts her on his lap.

“Baby we’re finally getting our dream of grandchildren and great grandchildren. We have two great grandchildren and Baby doll. Now we’ll get to meet our other baby girl soon. I know we thought we wouldn’t see this day come, but baby it’s our reality now. We’ll show baby girl love and family means everything to us just like we’re showing baby doll.”

“They’ve been wanting grandchildren for years. They thought that they wouldn’t be around to see me or Pete have any children.” Dad tells me as I have tears running down my face and daddy comes to me and puts his arms around me.

“Dean and I are going to pick her up in Knoxville. Do y’all want to watch the twins when we go?”

“Hell ya we would love to spend time with them while bring our baby girl home to us.” They both say through their teary eyes.

They get up and kiss me. They tell me they love me and they’ll see me in a day or two. Dad goes up to them and they both hug him at the same time and I feel the tears gather in my eyes. Dad lets them go and comes to me and wraps his arm around me. I lay my head on his shoulder and we leave the house.

“Me and a couple of the guys will be riding out with you to bring her home.” He says as he drives me home.

“I love you, dad. I will see you tomorrow.” I say as he kisses my head.

I get in the house and my man’s sitting in the living room drinking a beer.

“How did it go?” My man asks.

“Mamaw cried and papaw had a tear in his eye. Mamaw’s going to go do the DNA. She’ll meet us at the hospital when we take Jess to get the test done. She’s also going to keep the kids when we go get Jess from the Airport. Dad said he and a couple of guys are going to ride with us.”

“I wouldn’t expect anything less.” My man says to me.

He turns the television off and takes his bottle into the kitchen and throws it away. He walks back into the living room and stretches his hand out to me.

“It’s time for bed baby.” He says as I take his hand.

I agree whole heartedly with him. I’m tired and feel like I could sleep for a week. We get to the hallway and we look in on our children. He turns out the hallway light and closes the door behind us when we get to our room. He walks me to my side of the bed and starts to strip me down. Even as tired as I am; I’m getting turned on with him having his hands on me. I moan and push my ass into his crotch.
