Prologue

H
is hot breath
rushed across the back of her neck, and though she didn’t want to react, didn’t want to feel pleasure, she couldn’t stop it anymore than she could stop a runaway boulder racing down a hill.

“Why do you still fight me?” The low rumble of his voice cascaded through her system as his hands clasped her hips and he ground his thickness into her backside.

She said nothing, but a soft purr still managed to escape her tight throat. The slight shaking of his chest against her back told her he hadn’t missed her reaction. He missed nothing.

“You have to give yourself over to me,” he commanded, his voice stern.

Yes, she’d agreed to do whatever he wanted, but she couldn’t seem to let go.

In a flash, his hands moved from her hips, up her arms, and then were roughly holding on to her wrists as he yanked them above her head.

Shaking in his grasp, she was unsure what he was doing until she felt the coolness of a tie securing her hands together above her head. She struggled against him, but he pushed his body forward, sending her chest against the wall, while the solidness of his chest crushed her back.

She wished she could hate this, wished she could hate him, but that wasn’t remotely possible, especially when his hands were moving all over her, and his arousal was pressing into the tender areas of her ass.

“I’ll break you down, and only then will you be able to get back up,” he growled.

Before she could think of responding, he backed up, almost getting a whimper from her. But before she was able to protest too much, he spun her around so she was facing him. The fire ignited in his eyes was enough to make her breath catch.

It didn’t matter how many times he touched her; it was never enough. What was wrong with her?

Her hands, still above her head, were pushed against the wall, easily restrained by one of his. Then they were lifted higher, and she heard a rattling before he moved back.

Only when she tried to move did she notice she couldn’t. Looking up, she found out why. He’d restrained her against a hook in the wall. Her eyes narrowed as she tugged on her arms, but she wasn’t budging.

The victorious look in his eyes only angered her more. He liked controlling her, liked provoking her. She tried not to allow him to see a reaction, but she couldn’t help it.

“Let me go,” she told him. “I’m not in the mood for this.”

His lips twitched before his face went blank. “I don’t care if you’re in the mood or not. I own you, Elena. You agreed to that. Now I will do with you as I please.”

He moved from her to his closet and stepped inside. A shiver of both fear and desire ran through her as she waited for his return. She could continue to protest but that would only excite him more. So when he returned with a blindfold and a whip in his hand, she tightly sealed her lips.

“Don’t you have anything else to say?” he mocked.

She glared at him before she managed to mask her own expression. He chuckled as he stepped closer. The room went dark as he slipped the blindfold over her eyes, then he moved to her wrists where he added rope to ensure she wasn’t going anywhere.

When his fingers went to the edge of her shirt, she struggled against him, the movement not doing any good. His hot breath rushed across her neck as he leaned in closer.

The sound of her shirt ripping open seemed to echo through the large space as a rush of cool air touched her skin. Within seconds she was bared to him, the clothes she’d been wearing, destroyed.

His breath skimmed along her neck, and over her breasts, where her nipples instantly hardened. Still, he didn’t touch her — not with his mouth or his magnificent fingers. Only his moist, hot breath glided across her skin.

She cried out when his hands gripped her ankles and pushed them apart before securing them to a bar to keep them open. Then his hot breath pushed against her core, making her want to demand he use his tongue.

But she couldn’t demand anything of him. He was the one in charge and only gave when he wanted to give. Her body secure, she couldn’t even wiggle to try and bring herself closer to his mouth.

As much as she didn’t want to be turned on, her body craved his touch. Her core was soaked, and moisture coated her tender area, the muskiness drifting to her nose. He breathed heavier as he moved back up her body, the heat from his breath alerting her to where he was.

“Who do you belong to?” His voice was seductive, and she parted her lips, almost giving him what he wanted. At the last millisecond she averted answering the way he insisted.

“I asked a question, Elena.” The longer she was silent the harsher his voice became.

“Myself,” she finally muttered.

She knew what came next — almost anticipated it.

The whispering of the air was her only warning before the whip lashed out and swept across her thighs. There was enough force to sting without being so much that it was unbearable.

“Who do you belong to?” he asked again, excitement in his voice.

She shook her head.

This time the whip made contact with her stomach. He repeated the question over and over again with her refusing to give him the answer he demanded of her. Each hit of the whip was in a new place until she was sure her body was pink all over.

The pressure never changed. He didn’t hurt her the way the others had. They’d enjoyed inflicting great amounts of pain on her. No, not him. He pushed her, and she fought him, but in the end he was the one she craved — needed — wanted. He was the one who was setting her free . . .

Chapter One

E
lena had displeased
him.

She knew she was resistant to what he wanted, but for the first time she could remember she also knew she could defy a man without being punished so severely she was black and blue and incoherent for days or even weeks.

Dalton did enjoy punishment, but it was different. He never seemed to actually hurt her, and everything he did always led to pleasure.

It had been two months since the night he’d sent Leo away, and she still wasn’t acting as he wanted her to. Maybe it was because he didn’t make her feel like a prisoner.

When he refused to see her, though, she missed him. And because she did, she wondered what she was doing. Maybe it was time to leave. But where would she go? He still held the secrets of who she was, and so far he hadn’t shared that information with her.

A sigh escaped her parted lips as she paced back and forth across the nearly worn bedroom floors. What was she to do next? One part of her screamed she needed freedom. The other part told her she didn’t know how to be free.

Was she in love with Dalton?

No. Elena didn’t even know herself, let alone how to love another. Whatever their relationship was about, it wasn’t love.

When she turned, her heart thundered, because there he was — standing in her doorway, his gaze unreadable as he watched her. Elena’s first instinct was to rush over to him, drop to her knees, and beg his forgiveness, but her feet stayed firmly planted where she stood.

One tense moment turned into the next, neither of them moving, their gazes locked together in a silent battle. This was how it always was between them. There might not be actual fighting, but Elena had no doubt they were at war. Finally, she looked down and that’s when she felt his movement while he made his way closer to her.

It was magnetic how they seemed to be drawn together.

It was also frightening.

But what scared Elena more than submitting to this man was the thought of walking away from him. Maybe it was fear, maybe it was desire, and maybe it was just not knowing what else was out there. Whatever it was, she couldn’t seem to break his hold over her.

And she hated him a little bit for that.

“I’m not the monster here, Elena.”

His words made her pause. She slowly looked up at him as he stood so close, yet felt so very far away.

“I didn’t say you were,” she said.

“Then why continue fighting me? I told you what I want — what I demand to have. You were willing to give me that a couple months ago but you aren’t following through. I’m losing patience,” he said, his voice not changing.

“Do you care about anything, Dalton?” she snapped, feeling enough anger for both of them. She was so sick of the controlled voice, the expressionless mask he wore.

“I seem to care about you,” he said, his expression telling her he found this odd. At least it was something other than blank.

“I don’t believe you,” she said, her anger draining.

“You don’t have to believe me — your trust is irrelevant.” He moved to the bed and sat down, sending images of the two of them entwined as one into her head.

They’d only had sex on the bed a few times. He liked rough sex and in different places. He preferred to keep her bound, gagged, blind. She wouldn’t tell him aloud, but she liked it that way too.

Still, in the middle of the night when she woke up shaking, scared — alone — those were the times she would prefer him to be at her side so she could find comfort in his arms. He would never do that though. She either had to accept having him only during sex and deal with it, or she had to leave — if she had the right to leave, that was.

“I gave my body to you willingly,” she said with a sigh. “Still, that hasn’t mattered. Nothing matters to you. You really are a monster.”

“I’m not the demon.” So monotone, so devoid of emotion. How could a person live their life always in control like he was?

“If you aren’t evil, then tell me who I am,” she demanded again for what felt like the millionth time. “I’m tired of falling . . .” She couldn’t speak further as she tried to gather her emotions inside. Dalton hated uncontrollable outbursts.

“You don’t want to know the truth, Elena. You won’t be able to handle it,” he advised.

“You have no idea what I can handle. Tell me or . . . else.”

The last word was barely a whisper. It was an empty threat, and they both knew it.

“If you don’t like the accommodations here, you’re free to go any time you want,” he said.

“I don’t believe you.”

“What don’t you believe?”

“That I’m free. We both know that’s a lie,” she said as she moved closer to him. “You’ve pointed out relentlessly how you own me, how I’m not free to choose what I want.”

He was quiet for several moments as he studied her, making her feel like nothing more than a specimen he found mildly entertaining.

“We aren’t going to get past this are we?” he asked.

Elena knew the question wasn’t directed at her, so she stood in front of him and waited, her breathing accelerating as she watched the indecision on his face. This was progress.

He wasn’t just saying no and walking away. She was afraid to so much as move a pinkie finger as she waited for his decision.

When he stood, she took a step back and then another. There was purpose in his eyes. She just didn’t know what the purpose was.

“I think it’s time you know.”

He started walking toward her door, and her throat closed in panic.

“What do you mean?” she shouted as she rushed up behind him and grabbed his arm, something she certainly wasn’t allowed to do. The cold look he sent back her way made her pull her hand off him. A chill rushed through her.

“We leave tomorrow.”

He walked out her door, leaving her standing there, not knowing what was coming next. Was she really going to find out who she was?

She wouldn’t know that answer until the next day. Elena knew she wasn’t going to sleep. She had a bad feeling about what was to come. But she needed this. She needed the answers that had been so elusive to her.

And Dalton seemed the only one able to supply them.
