Ellen Levine was born in New York City. She has a master's degree in political science from the University of Chicago and a Juris Doctor degree from New York University School of Law.
Her interest in social issues led to her involvement in the civil rights movement during the 1960s. Several of her books for children are about civil and human rights subjects, including
A Fence Away from Freedom,
which concerns the Japanese-American internment camps during World War II.
Ellen Levine divides her time between New York City and Salem, New York.
