âHow about you, Acting Ensign McGraw?' The captain turned, gravely, to look at me. âMay we call on you for another mission?'
I said, âYes, sir! Please, sir! Any time.'
âWell, that is good to know,' said the captain. âAs soon as we can arrange a new partner for you ⦠I do have someone in mind. There is a girl called Lisa Lippincott â '
âLisa Lippincott?' Rosie's head jerked up. âShe's in my class!'
âYes; that is how we picked up on her.'
âDunno what use she'd be.'
I couldn't very well say âMore use than you'. Not after she'd told the captain I was a hero.
âOf course, she is quite into science,' admitted Rosie. âI suppose that'd help.'
âRosie's more the literary type,' I said.
She flashed me a grateful smile. But it was the least I could do.
âWell, Acting Ensignâ¦' The captain held out a hand. âHere's to your next mission! And all
future missions. We shall be in touch very soon.'
âYes, sir! Thank you, sir!' I said.
âLieutenant Malandra, could you do the honours?'
Lieutenant Malandra beamed us back down just as Auntie Jay and Uncle Kev were getting out of their car.
Auntie Jay said, âHello, you two! And what have you been up to?'
âNothing very much,' said Rosie. âJust back from the palace ⦠been rescuing the Queen from an alien bug.'
âReally?' Auntie Jay widened her eyes and gave a little shiver, making like she was impressed. âThat sounds pretty hairy!'
âPretty hairy,' agreed Rosie.
âHow did you rescue her?'
âJake did it. He needle-gunned her and the bug shot out and one of the corgis ate it.'
âAs corgis do,' said Uncle Kev, winking at Auntie Jay over our heads.
Mum had opened the front door and was waiting for us as we walked up the path.
âGuess what?' trilled Auntie Jay. âJake and Rosie have been rescuing the Queen from an alien bug!'
âYes, they've been very busy that way just lately,' said Mum. âOnly yesterday they were abducted by aliens.'
âWell! Who says children don't use their imagination any more? You know what?' said Auntie Jay. âYou should write it all down!'
So that's what I've done. Not that I expect anybody to believe meâ¦
