What Tyler really should remember by now is how well bones hold heat.

He never does. It's like every time he wants to believe that he doesn't need to learn anything, every time he acts like this is the last time, like there's no way in hell he's going to be pulling his fucking sidekick Jake burned and twisted from a job gone wrong.

And all the little bastard is saying is, “We got Sarah, we got Sarah,” like somehow that's going to change the fact that he's blistered everywhere his shirt isn't stuck to his skin.

But Tyler's making himself be calm because that's what he fucking
does
(because really he does have plans for when this happens because this
always fucking happens
) and he whispers, “That's right, buddy, you did it,” while he twists a cap off a tube of ointment and rubs his hands together to warm them up.

“She got out, right? We got her?”

“We got her. And that's the last fucking job we're doing for Evanson, all right? I mean it this time. If he thinks we're gonna do some rescue mission for
Clara
--”

“Ugh, don't mention her, now I'm all nauseous.”

“That's because half your skin's sloughed off.”

“So dramatic.”

“C'mon, up...” He puts his hand on Jake's back, feels his t-shirt starting to peel away like skin, and carefully leans him against his shoulder to rub the warmed ointment over his arm. A sob gets stuck in Jake's throat, and Tyler tucks him in to his neck.

“You did it, kid,” Tyler says. “You're a hero.”

Jake closes his eyes and breathes out like that's enough, like a little platitude has made his scorched skin and his wrecked throat and the fucked-up world somewhat okay, and sometimes that's enough to get Tyler through the day but right now Jake's stupid optimism is just another symptom of how much the universe has fucked them over. Who the fuck tricked Jake enough to make him think there's something to be
optimistic
about?

It's all he can do not to get up and hit something, and then of course the kid has to mumble a little in his sleep and catch the hem of Tyler's sleeve between brown-black fingernails.

Goddamn it, kid.

This is the kind of shit that will make you believe.

Just for tonight.

id really prefer if there were less cursing in your fics. i mean it's not like they talk that way on the show.

_EvenIf

thanks! i'll take that under advisement :) and i'll try to remember to put a warning on next time.

rupologize

of course they don't talk that way on the show, jackweed. It's network tv.

_EvenIf

now now.

Okay, guys, calm down.

I get it. I saw it. I'm not thrilled either. I mean, when we last left the guys they were in the middle of a fire and the house was falling down around them and
we didn't know if they were going to make it out oh my god
, except, of course we knew. What show have you guys been watching? They always make it out. That wasn't the point. The point was that scene right after they got out, the one we didn't see, the one where they realized they were gonna be okay and made up after the fight. I wanted to see it too, guys.

And no, it's not credible that Jake was lying unconscious behind a burning dresser and two days later he doesn't have a scratch on him. There's absolutely something missing there and everyone knows it.

But this is our show. This is the show we love, and tearing it apart like hyenas every time the writers do something we don't like is shitty. Do we actually like this show or not?

Can we please talk about the good stuff? The Evanson reveal was kind of mind-blowing, right? Did ANYBODY see that coming? And in other news (and I swear I'm not fourteen but) how cute was Jake's hair this week?

I'm thinking of getting back into drawing, so there might be an art post later this week. I don't know what I want to draw, though. Which is kind of always the problem. Prompts?

Anyway, here are this week's fic recs:

Hey Parents!

Good news on the job front – I have one! Putting whipped cream and sprinkles on lattes for people more glamorous than I am! Not my field of study – not anybody's field of study – but it pays the bills.

That's a lie. It doesn't pay the bills at all. Even splitting the rent on Charlie's old rat-trap. I would actually sell my computer for a nice apartment, except they don't seem to have those in Northern California (and let's be honest, of course I wouldn't sell my computer).

I went to the beach yesterday, though, just to see what all the fuss was about. God, it's
nothing
like the Lake Michigan beach! It feels stupid to say it, but the ocean is
huge
. (I know, I should have been a poet. My talents are wasted as a barista.) I stood there and felt like I was falling off the edge of the world. But in a good way, if that makes sense.

Tomorrow, Charlie and I

start work on Monday.

Um, holy fuck.

I just read your latest fic. Are you in my brain? If so, you can stay. That was just everything I wanted from last week's
Up Below
and didn't get. Thank you, thank you, thank you, etc.

So it's kind of super embarrassing, but I draw occasionally (by which I mean I used to draw four years ago and I'm ridiculously out of practice) and I drew this thing to go along with your fic. It's SUPPOSED to be the part where Jake falls asleep on Tyler at the end, but it looks more like a couple of space aliens.

The self-deprecating thing isn't as charming as I think, is it.

I saw on your journal that you've written a lot of other stuff. Your fans seem a little...hardcore. I guess you must be pretty good. Definitely, if this teeny opus is anything to go by. Psyched to read more, but it's gonna have to wait because I'm in the middle of moving and getting all my shit unpacked.

Okay. This has been sufficiently creepy and weird. I'm attaching the picture. Hope you like it.

Carry on,
finnblueline
