Macy held her breath. She didn't know how much more she could take.

One near the front relaxed. "It's just Luke and Heather."

The others changed their positions, each looking relieved.

"How did you get away?" asked the one in front. Macy couldn't remember his name. "The fire was all around the opening."

Luke pulled Macy close and wrapped his arm around her. "We found another way out. We were near the corn fields."

"Are they coming after us?"

"They're sure to," Luke said, "but for now, we appear to be in the clear."

"We need to set up camp somewhere."

"Do we have any supplies, David?" Luke asked. "I've got matches, but not much else."

David shook his head. "We weren't prepared to leave."

"Then we're better off moving," Luke said.

"Everyone's tired. We need to get some rest," David said.

Luke stood taller against Macy. "We're going to be a lot worse off than tired if the prophets find us. Who's with me?"

Most of the others behind David agreed with Luke.

"Good," said Luke. "The farther away we get, the better. Once we reach the world, we can speak with their authorities and get the help we need. For now, we just focus on getting there."

"Let's discuss a plan," David said.

"Yes, let's." Luke turned to Macy. "Sit down and rest. I'm not sure how long we're going go before we rest again."

"At least we're free. I can't believe I'm away from Chester." Macy looked around, never having felt more free.

Luke wrapped his arms around her and placed his lips on hers softly. "And I'll make sure you're not just away from him, but that you get back to your family."
