After receiving and opening a message from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, your phone can notify the sender that you have opened and read the message. These notifications are called Read Receipts, and appear under the original message on the sender's screen as "Read", followed by a time. Read Receipts are only compatible with iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch devices. To turn Read Receipts on or off:

1. Touch the
 icon. The Settings screen appears.
2. Scroll down and touch
Messages
. The Message Settings screen appears.
3. Touch the
 switch next to 'Send Read Receipts'. The
 switch appears and Read Receipts are turned on.
4. Touch the
 switch next to 'Send Read Receipts'. The
 switch appears and Read Receipts are turned off.

3. Turning 'Send as SMS' On or Off

When a message cannot be sent via iMessage, your phone can attempt to send it as a regular text message, also known as an SMS. To turn Send as SMS on or off:

1. Touch the
 icon. The Settings screen appears.
2. Scroll down and touch
Messages
. The Message Settings screen appears.
3. Touch the
 switch next to 'Send as SMS'. The
 switch appears and 'Send as SMS' is turned on.
4. Touch the
 switch next to 'Send as SMS'. The
 switch appears and 'Send as SMS' is turned off.

Note: When 'Send as SMS' is turned off, you will only be able to send a message to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, which has iMessage enabled.

4. Turning MMS Messaging On or Off

When you are running low on data, it can be useful to disable MMS messaging, also known as media messaging, to avoid receiving unwanted picture messages that will use up the data too quickly. To turn MMS messaging on or off:

1. Touch the
 icon. The Settings screen appears.
2. Scroll down and touch
Messages
. The Message Settings screen appears.
3. Touch the
 switch next to 'MMS Messaging'. The
 switch appears and MMS Messaging is turned off.
4. Touch the
 switch next to 'MMS Messaging'. The
 switch appears and MMS Messaging is turned on.
