“I don’t know how women do
this over and over again.” Her belly tightened with another contraction. When
it passed she breathed out and looked at him. “At least we’re getting this over
with in one shot.” He grinned at her.
“A two-for-one kind of
thing.”
He chuckled and squeezed her hand. He pulled up to the front
entrance of the hospital and helped her out of the car. Fortunately, they had
taken a tour of the maternity wing months ago, so they knew right where to go.

After checking in and being
seen to a room, Kate breathed out a sigh of relief. She had a fear of delivering
her babies in the back of Nate’s car, but that thought quickly morphed to
humor. Nate stayed by her side as they hooked her up to the medical equipment.
The sound of
Kev’s
voice
down the hall had her heart racing. When he entered the room his expression was
filled with worry.

“Sweetie, are you okay?” He
took hold of her other hand, and Kate didn’t miss the way the nurse gave her a
curious once over. No doubt a torrent of thoughts passed through her head. Although
she considered both men her husbands, by law she could only have one. Last year
she’d legally married
Kev
and had a commitment
ceremony with Nate. In her eyes both men were hers, and no court system or
piece of paper would tell her differently. Another contraction came, and she
closed her eyes and waited the discomfort out.

After another hour of
contractions the doctor finally gave her the okay to start pushing. With Nate
holding one leg and
Kev
holding the other, Kate
grabbed all of her strength and pushed like her life depended on it. Nate and
Kev
whispered words of encouragement to her, and if she
hadn’t been in so much pain or so determined to get the babies out, she would
have told them to shut the hell up.

After what seemed like
eternity the first little cry could be heard, but Kate didn’t have much time to
enjoy the sound because baby number two was on its way.

“And it’s another girl,” the
doctor said loudly, and Kate watched as her daughters were taken to the
incubator. Fortunately, she had made it to thirty-seven weeks’ gestation, so
the babies didn’t have to go to the
NICU
. Kate rose
up slightly and watched as nurses clamored around the babies.
A look at Nate and
Kev
showed grins a
mile wide on their faces.

“Shit,
Kev
,
two little girls.” Nate said in awe.
Kev
looked over
at him and reached across the bed to slap his brother on the back in the way
guys did to congratulate each other. Kate smiled and rolled her eyes.

“Dammit, I’m going to have
to get my shotgun out and clean it.” She looked over at him curiously. “You
know, for when little assholes come by to date my girls.” Kate started to laugh
as well as everyone else in the room. The nurses brought over the tiny bundles
wrapped in pink and handed one to
Kev
and Nate. It
didn’t matter who the father was, because in their eyes they both were. They
bent down, and she got a look at their daughters. A light sprinkling of blonde
peach fuzz hair covered their tiny heads. Kate ran her fingers over each of
their little noses and loved the identical yawns they produced.

“They’re beautiful,”
Kev
said.

“Just like their mom.” Nate
kissed her on the forehead then gave each of the girls a gentle one on the top
of their heads. Not only did twins run on their side, but also on Kate’s, and
even if she had known this would be the outcome before it happened, she
wouldn’t have changed it for anything.

“You guys have names picked
out?” The doctor grinned at the three of them.

“Rose and
Lilly, our two little flowers.”
Kate
rested against the bed and sighed. She was happy, and there wasn’t anything on
the planet that could take it away from her, not when she had the men she loved
by her side and two perfect little angels in her life.
