“Cody,” Benjamin said, cracking a smile. “Sorry about that.” He scooped up his son and carried him toward the kitchen.

“It’s okay,” Jake said as his voice went up an octave and followed them toward the kitchen.

“Be nice,” Benjamin scolded Cody. “Jake, this is my son.”

“Nice to meet you!” Cody said, thrusting his little hand out.

Jake smiled. God, he loved kids. Benjamin was so lucky to have a son. “Nice to meet you, too. I’m Jake.”

“Jake, Jake, Boh-dake, banana-fanana - No cake. Jaaaa-aaake!” Cody sang.

Jake forced a smile, still recovering from the blow to his bottom half. Cute as he was, his nephew was a handful that was for sure.

“That’s Uncle Jake to you,” Benjamin said.

“Okay, Uncle Jake!” Cody said.

Jake smiled. But he was a third wheel and eyed the door sadly thinking he should go. “I should probably go then.”

“No, stay.” Benjamin said. Jake was surprised by his insistence, but happy just the same. “I could use some help taking care of him and he can play while we finish up.”

Jake raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”

“Finish up the bedroom, I mean. I want to get it done and ready for him. I just wasn’t expecting him to come so early.”

Jake studied him for a second. Tough as he was, something told Jake that the man didn’t like to be alone and craved attention.

“Sure, my pleasure,” Jake said. He was honored being invited into Benjamin’s inner circle. He knew it wasn’t a privilege to be taken lightly. Benjamin struck him as someone who was intensely private.

“You hungry?” he asked. Benjamin set Cody on the kitchen table and looked in the kitchen cabinets.

“I want Spaghetti-O’s!” his son announced. The two young men chuckled.

Jake laughed. “Spaghetti-O’s?”

Benjamin gave his son a kiss on the forehead. “I love you, little dude.”

“Love you too, daddy,” Cody said.

It broke Jake’s heart. He was such an amazing father. He could tell even from what little time he saw of the two of them together. Benjamin adored his son, adored Jake’s nephew. That’s when it got to him. He was being selfish. There was no way that he could continue messing around with his step-brother. They had to remain just friends. It would be too confusing for his nephew, no matter how private they kept their intimacy from the world.

"So," Benjamin said, his eyes meeting Jake's. "I thought we could talk about Bert and Ernie for a second."

"Bert and Ernie?" Jake said confused, until it hit him. "Oh, Bert and Ernie!"

"I like Bert and Ernie," Cody said.

Benjamin kissed his son on the side of his head.

"Son, why don't you go and turn on the XBox while we get your food ready?"

"Okay!" Cody said, hopping off the kitchen counter in a ninja stance and running off into the living room. “Hi-ya!”

Benjamin sighed deeply as his hand reached across the counter for Jake's.

“So ...” Jake said, his heart pounding. This was hard. “I was thinking about Bert and Ernie too.”

Benjamin moved in closer to him and Jake could feel the sexual heat from his body. Jake turned away from his step-brother so he could say what he wanted to say. “I think it’s best if we just ... stay friends.”

A look of shock swept over Benjamin’s face. “Why?”

“Why? Cause of the little muppet in the living room. That’s why.”

Benjamin cleared his throat. “It’s not like he knows what’s going on. It’s not like we’re going public with-”

“Not now. But he might know one day and kids are smart. Believe me what you ... what we did in the bathroom ... everything we’ve ever done is ... God, wow. It’s just ...”

“Yeah. Cool. Whatever you want.”

It was obvious Benjamin didn’t like Jake’s decision by the way he focused on fixing up that pot of Spaghetti-O’s.

“We’re still cool, right?  I mean ...”

“Of course. We’re friends. I respect that. Step-brothers. Just don’t ... don’t want to lose you again.”

The sentiment warmed Jake’s heart. Even though he wanted more, so much more, he’d made the right decision. At least he hoped.

CHAPTER 24

“Again!” Cody said. His son pouted as his father was about to close the storybook, kneeling next to him.

“Son.” Benjamin squinted his eyes in false anger. “You look pretty tired to me.”

“I’m not tired.” Cody said, although he couldn’t hide his yawn. Jake stood at the doorway watching him. The small child was in his bed, tucked into his Spider-Man bed sheets. The room was a virtual shrine to superheroes with posters and action figures all around the place. There was a toy box in one corner filled to the brim with more toys. Even the kid's pajamas had superheroes dotted all over them. He wondered if Cody thought of Benjamin like a superhero. Iron Man had a robotic suit and it wasn't a far cry from Benjamin's leg. Benjamin shot Jake a wink and his heart warmed. He wished he and his own father had the closeness that Benjamin had with his son. Nothing was sexier to him than seeing a good father and it was so apparent how much Cody meant to Benjamin.

“Alright, just one more time ... My two turtles going down the street, going down to the ice cream shop getting something to eat.”

Jake stifled a giggle for he never thought he would hear such a butch man like Benjamin speak like that, but it showed him another layer of the man, and it only made him more attractive. The child’s night-light glowed, making the already handsome man even more endearing.

Before he could get another word out, the boy’s heavy eyes won out. Benjamin rose, giving his son a quick soft kiss on the top of his head before stepping toward Jake.

The two men backed into the hallway and Benjamin shut the door lightly.

“You’re good at that,” Jake said as they stepped down the hall, walking side-by-side.

“At what?” Benjamin asked.

“The whole daddy thing,” Jake said.

“Thanks. It’s hard not having him around as often as I want.”

“I bet. You’re a lucky man though. I’ve always wanted a family.”

“You mean you don’t like being a swinging bachelor?” Benjamin teased.

“Not particularly. I had my fun when I was 17 armed with my fake ID. I guess I burnt out on all of that pretty early. Didn’t have the easiest life. I had to grow up fast. Move out where I could be myself without the pressures of conforming to who my parents wanted me to be.”

“How so?” Benjamin asked as they stepped out onto the back balcony.

Jake sighed as the memories of his childhood flooding him. Where could he begin? He felt like an outcast, always feeling like he couldn’t relate to anyone, especially his father. Jake looked out at the scenery around him. The world stretched out far ahead. There was a time when he thought about exploring it all, but it was too big, too much to see. It wasn't a world for him anyway. The only world he needed was with Benjamin.

“What was Dad like? To grow up with, I mean?” Benjamin asked.

“Distant. It was almost as if I didn’t have a father sometimes, Benjamin. I was interested in other things. I don’t think he knew how to connect with me. He’s not much of a talker.” Jake said.

“Yeah, I remember that,” Benjamin said.

“Besides, he was always out of town,” Jake said.

“I wish my step-dad went on vacations.”

“Why’s that?”

He cleared his throat. “Still have some of the scars on my body.”

That explained some of the scars he’d found and wanted to ask about. “No kid should have to go through that. You deserved better,” Jake said.

“I keep thinking if dad, our dad had stuck around, we wouldn’t have gone through any of that.”

Jake felt guilty as if he’d robbed Benjamin of an experience that he truly desired, of the protection he needed.

Benjamin gripped the fence as if needing something to channel his frustrations with. “That’s why I’m trying to pull things together for Cody. He deserves better than what I went through. I never wanted to be the type of dad that wasn’t there for him and she’s forcing my hand.”

“Wish there was something I could do to help.” Jake said.

“You are. I never had anyone to really talk to about this kind of stuff. Not since ...” Benjamin started to say.

“Not since what?” Jake asked.

“My best friend’s dead. It’s a long story, but a lot of things have changed since then.”

The news hit Jake hard. He had no idea, but that explained Benjamin’s reluctance to talk about it like an open book. He had so many more questions, things he wanted to know and yet didn’t want to pry.

The evening was calm and there was stillness in the air that added to the intimate atmosphere. Being there as Benjamin said goodnight to his son made Jake feel special. They spoke in soft voices and it seemed like an apt time to share some things that both of them wanted to talk about, but had rarely been able to.

“What was he like?” Jake asked.

Benjamin stared off into the distance through the trees in the starlit sky. “Another time, alright?”

“Sure, no problem,” Jake said, not wanting to push. Benjamin looked worn and stressed. He couldn’t imagine the toll it must have on him. Jake wanted to be there for him, to hold him in his arms and tell him that everything was okay. He wanted to be there to do whatever he needed to take his mind off things. He couldn't imagine the things that Benjamin had been through: losing his best friend, his leg, and now his ex-girlfriend threatening him. Could he lose his son too? Jake didn't want to face the possibility. He didn’t want to be responsible for that. He had too much guilt as it was.

He was about to raise his arm and stroke Benjamin's shoulder, but his step-brother looked at him. His expression changed, and Jake knew that the conversation was going to change too.

“Besides, the kid’s asleep and I have something else in mind.” His eyebrow arched seductively.

“We can’t.” Jake turned away, until Benjamin pulled him back.

“Why not?”

“You know why not. It’s wrong.”

“Who says?”

“Well, everybody.”

“Listen to me. You’re an adult and I’m an adult. We’re not blood-related and what we do between us, behind closed doors, is our business. You hear me?”

Jake nodded. It was true, he just needed to hear it from someone other than himself.

Benjamin didn’t even wait to respond before he got down on his knees, his hands on Jake’s pants button. “I really need cock tonight. Your cock.”

“No. People might see us,” Jake said. He looked down and saw a handful of people down quite a distance away. His insecurities about himself surfaced. He couldn’t help himself.

“Look at me,” Benjamin ordered and stood up. “Now.”

Jake obeyed.

“I don’t like it when you say no. I’m a man. And I’m used to getting my way. If we’re going to be together, you’re going to have to get used that. And right here, right now, I want you. I’m going to take you, Jake. You hear me?”

Somehow those words comforted him, soothed him and gave him the security he needed. They also gave him a hard-on so stiff it hurt. “I got you. They can’t see us through the trees. Besides, that’s what makes it hotter.”

“We should just ...” Jake said, but Benjamin’s kisses down his neck stopped him.

“Huh?” Benjamin asked, continuing to kiss him in all the right places.

“We should ...” But again, the man’s hot mouth tasted the nape of Jake’s neck and his hot breath rolling down his arm. Every kiss, every touch was heaven.

“Huh?” Benjamin teased, that devilish smile of his indicating he had no intention of stopping.

“Maybe we should ...”

Benjamin’s kisses ended at Jake’s fingertips where he slid them in his hot wet mouth and toying with them with his tongue. The vibration of his moan as he slid them in and out, in and out of his mouth made Jake arch his neck back in ecstasy.

“Are you sure you want to stop?” Benjamin asked. “Huh?”

“No, I ...”

“Are you sure you want me to ... stop?” He ran his tongue up and down the underside of his wrist. Jake had no idea that was one of his spots. Leave it to the lovemaking machine to help him discover it.

Jake was about to protest again, when he felt Benjamin's hands press against his burning bulge. His fingers deftly unclasped the button of his pants and opened them slightly as he knelt back down. He leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on Jake's smooth skin. It caused a fluttering in his heart, and he leaned against the balcony, holding onto it for security.

“Oh fuck,” Jake was not able to put into words how great it felt.

“Don’t say that,” Benjamin said.

“Why not?”

“That’s just going to turn me on more and then I’m going to have to do naughty things to you.” Benjamin said.

And naughty things he did. His warm tongue slithered around Jake’s skin as Benjamin slid his hands down his thighs and reached around to his butt. He pulled at Jake's trousers roughly, his large biceps tensing. He leaned back. Jake looked down, almost unable to believe that Benjamin was on his knees in front of him. He gasped as Benjamin slowly pulled his zipper down.
