The Black Book

‘You need stability in your life, you just won’t allow it to happen,’ says Siobhan Clarke to Rebus and she’s right. Rebus starts the episode trying to apologise to his latest flame and failing miserably. He then takes his anger out on – what turns out to be – a colleague’s car.

This is an episode where Rebus is at his maverick best: angry, prejudiced and totally
hysterical. Rebus receives a notebook full of ciphers, which could have clues connected to a hillside murder and an almost identical unsolved murder from Rebus’s past. With heart firmly on sleeve, Rebus stirs up enough trouble to solve the case through sheer force of will.

There is no burned out hotel, no Heartbreak Cafe, no Cafferty, no return of Rebus’s brother; just a story lost in the ghetto.

A Question of Blood

There’s an energy that starts this episode that
makes good TV but confuses the initiated. The problem is that the script is based upon a gritty and socially aware novel and the intent of the writer doesn’t come across at all. The very reason for adapting a good book to screen is to share that story with a different audience by doing it some kind of justice. There is no justification in taking the title of the book and a couple of locations and
coming up with whatever you like! Stott and Price are good but the Oxford Bar scenes lack any substance and overall the story is too polite.

By this time the show had firmly taken on its own parallel universe of character interpretations and storylines. Siobhan is more to the fore in this episode, which she isn’t in the original story. In actual fact she wasn’t
even in the original story! But a strong supporting cast makes this a more enjoyable ride than some of the other misguided episodes. Most outstanding is Gary Lewis, who plays Gregor Jack. A great actor.

Let It Bleed

Those with an imagination will find the basis of Rankin’s original story here. Rebus moving
from an all black suit to dark blue provided a taste of the Rebus/Clarke banter that has entertained the reader of the original novels. Good to see Rebus’s love-life living up to its complex level of mayhem also. One of the better Stott episodes, but unlikely to draw more people to the original novels.
