That’s what we were. We’d changed something because of it. We’d helped save Meru’s world.
I still wanted to scream and howl and throw rocks at the walls because I wanted my Mom back. That wouldn’t let up any time soon. But I didn’t want to be dead with her, whatever that was in between the me I was and the me I’d be when I was Meru. This world, with sand in my shoes and horse smell in my hair and a mosquito taking a big, bloody bite out of my elbow, was—is—the best thing there is.
That’s why Meritre’s people wanted to take everything, body and all, into the afterlife. They weren’t about death and mummies and tombs. They were about life. They loved it so much, they never wanted to let it go.
Tears wouldn’t stop running down my face. They blurred the moon until it was all one wide white glow across eight thousand years. And there was Bonnie right in the middle, whiter and stronger than anything.
I hugged her tight. I hugged the life that was in all of us. Then I went to deal with all the things you have to deal with when someone you love dies, because that’s part of life, too. It’s the price you pay for being alive.
