Carson paused and avoided eye contact with me.

“He thinks that you should go back to California with Mason.”

“What?”

“He said that, Mason can give you everything you want and need. He thinks he has nothing to offer you, because he lives in his mom’s house and he works on the family ranch and makes furniture for extra money. I tried to tell him that, ranchers live a different life. That it’s not uncommon to have several families under the same roof, but he wouldn’t listen to me.”

“That bossy arrogant man, what the hell is he thinking? I would live in a tent, if it meant I could stay with him. I will not go back to California with Mason; I don’t want anything to do with him. I don’t love, Mason and I realize now, I never did.”

“That’s what I told him, but he wouldn’t listen. What are you going to do? You’re not going to give up on him are you?”

“Hell no, I’ll let him have a little pity party for a while. I just wish some way I could make him see reason.

Chapter 16

I sat at the dining room table eating dinner, not saying a word. I ate the food but couldn’t tell you what it was I was eating. I was just walking through life right now, on autopilot. I was just going through the motions of living. It had been five days since I had seen
Kenna
, plus five very long nights. She had called at least a dozen times, but I just couldn’t talk to her, it would hurt too much.

The mood at the dining room table seemed to be quite sullen. Everyone seemed to walk on egg shells around me. My mom hadn’t said much, but I could tell I wasn’t her favorite person right now.

I had just picked up a fork full of some type meat we were eating for dinner when my mom slammed her hands down on the table as hard as she could. It startled me so bad, my fork went clattering to my plate and I jumped, I looked up to see Jesse and Josh with a surprised look on their face that probably mirrored my own.

“ENOUGH! DO YOU HEAR ME, WYATT JAMES
WALKER?

My mouth just hung open in shock.

“Mom…..”

“Don’t you dare, mom me. I have sat here and watched you wallow around in this self-inflicted self-pity, for almost a week. No more, do you understand me young man. I don’t care if your twenty six or sixty, this will stop right now. You have a wonderful woman, who loves you, not what you can buy her, but you, just you. You’re treating her like she is some type of shallow bimbo, who is after nothing but money from the man she’s in love with. How dare you, disrespect her like that.”

I just stared in shock at my mom. She had never spoken to any of us like this before. Jesse and Josh picked up their plates to leave the room.

“Sit down, right now both of you. You need to hear this too. This family and I mean all of us, own this ranch. This ranch has been in the Walker family for almost seventy five years. There have been at least a dozen different Walker families raised in this house. We’re not rich by any means of the word, but we sure as hell aren’t poor either. Your father and I raised you to be proud of your family. How do you think he would feel, to know that you’re ashamed of your family and what we stand for?

All I could do was
staring
at my plate. She was right, I knew it. I looked in her tear filled eyes and cleared my throat that was full of shame and embarrassment.

“He would probably kick my butt all over the back forty, and you know what, I would deserve it. I’m sorry mom, I really am. I was so wrapped up in myself, I just didn’t stop to think of what I was really saying.”

Mom pushed back her chair and stood. She gave me a pointed look, and then let me have it with both barrels.

“Do you Love,
Kenna
?”

“Yes.”

Then you better make this right, Wyatt. Do I make myself clear?

“Yes ma’am.”

“And you two, if you ever do something as arsine as your brother, you’ll be living out in the barn. Do you understand, what I’m saying to you both?”

Yes
, mom.”

“Yeah, I understand mom.”

“Good.”

With that one last word, she stormed out of the room.

Chapter 17

I sat on the couch facing the TV just staring not really seeing anything playing on it. Carson sat next to me on the couch, I could see him looking at me out of the corner of his eyes once in a while. Carson’s cell phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and checked to see who was calling. He glanced at me, then stood up from the couch and answered the phone as he walked toward the kitchen. I heard the back door close a few moments later.

I waited a half hour for him to return, but he didn’t come back in the house. I stood and walked over to my dad and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

“Dad, I’m going to bed, I’ll talk to you in the morning.”

“Sweet dreams, hon.”

As hard as I tried, I couldn’t fall asleep. My mind kept racing with all sorts of thoughts. When my mind, thought of the future, it saw a big question mark. My head was filled with a thousand what
ifs
.

One thing I did know for sure was that I loved Wyatt, but how long was I going to wait for him to accept our love. What if he never did? Would I wait for him until I was old and gray? I knew the answer to that question, as sure as I knew my own name. Yes! I was awakened early by a knock on the door. Carson popped his head in the door and gave me a smile.

“Hey sis, there’s delivery here for you.”

“Oh Carson,
its
only 7:00 am, what is it?”

I’m not telling you,
it’s
a surprise, now come and get up. Don’t make me drag you out of that bed.

I sat up and threw my pillow at him. He laughed and shut the door. I could hear him laughing all the way down the hall. He is such a brat.

I got out of bed and walked down to the stairs. When I had reached the base Carson was standing there with a stupid smile on his face.

“What?”

“You’ll see, come on, it’s in here.”

I followed him across the hall and into the living room. I had no idea what I was looking for and I just looked at Carson blankly.

“It’s over here.”

I followed him around the other side of the couch. I stared blankly at what was in front of me.

“I don’t understand?”

“Wyatt thought this would say more than anything else.”

I stood there and looked through tear filled eyes, at the most beautiful rocking chair I had ever seen. It looked like it was Mahogany and the back and seat were inlaid with cowhide on the seat and back. But that wasn’t what stopped me dead in my tracks and left me breathless. It was what was carved, on to the top of the back of the rocking chair. In beautiful script, it stole my heart. There was a heart carved on each side of the words.

Kenna
will you marry me

I stood there like a fool, tears flowing down my face. I couldn’t take my gaze off the chair.

“Carson, I don’t want to be hurt again, Can I trust him to not leave me again, when the road gets a little rough?

“Why don’t you ask him yourself, darlin?”

I swirled around and saw Wyatt, standing where Carson had been. Carson was nowhere to be seen.

“How did you get in here without me hearing you come in?”

Wyatt held out his hand and I saw a can of oil.

“All I had to do was oil the screen door.”

He gave me a weak smile.

“To answer your other question, I never want to be away from you ever again. I’m so sorry, I was so stupid. I had no right, to make decisions for you.”

“I don’t understand why you thought I would even think about going with Mason? I don’t love him and I really never did, I know that now.”

“When you left for California, I thought that was what you wanted. That lifestyle and all that went with it.”

“I went to California, to start a new life, because the man I had been in love with for
years
did want me.”

Wyatt pulled me into his arms and held me tight.

“I’ll always want you darlin, always. I know that I have more of one thing, than Mason does. I have more love for you than anyone else in this world,
Kenna
.”

I held her close to me and let her cry out all her insecurities, doubts and hurt.

He pulled back and looked at me. He wiped away my tears away with his fingertips. He then he knelt down on one knee in front of me and took my hand in his. I was shaking and wiping more tears away from my eyes so I could see him. Removing his hat and setting it on the floor he took a deep breath and spoke.

Kenna
Jamison, I’m so sorry for what I did to you. I love you more than life itself. I can’t promise you the world, but I can promise you a life full of love. I’ll do my best to give you the happiest life possible. Will you marry me and make me the luckiest man alive.

“Yes!”

He reached into his pocket the stood in front of me.

Kenna
, my mother insisted you have this. She said it was good luck for her and my dad and she says it’ll bring us luck too. He took my hand again and placed
an
antique diamond engagement ring set in the center of the filigree gold swirls was a beautiful diamond. I wasn’t the largest diamond or the smallest diamond. It was like the man I loved, a perfect fit. He kissed my knuckle that held the token of his love,
and then
he kissed me.

From the door way, I heard my dad’s voice.

“It’s about damn time you two.”

Chapter 18

That night there was a party at the Walker ranch. It was a double celebration of sorts. The first thing we celebrated was
Kenna
an
d my engagement, the second was
I had received a huge order for furniture. I was for a new hotel in Jackson Hole. They wanted me to do all the furniture for their lobby. The order was to be completed in nine months. That gave me all winter to fill the order.

As the party come to a close, Jack and Carson headed home.
Kenna
wanted to stay so I told Jack I would take her home later. I asked
Kenna
if she would like to have tour of my wood shop. I promised her with a wink the she would defiantly enjoy it.

Hand in hand we walked past the barn and to my shop behind it. I opened the door and stepped back so
Kenna
could walk in a head of me. I locked the door behind us. She had only had gone about five feet when she gasped in surprise. She turned toward me her, excitement made her whole face glow.

“When did you do all this?”

“After, I left your house this morning. We don’t have very many chances to be together and I figured tonight of all nights we would want to be together. I took one of the tarps from our camping trip on put it over my large saw dust pile. I packed it down so it was flat and put our sleeping bags on top of the soft saw dust. The bottle of wine etc…. I brought from the house earlier before you got here. Since there is dry wood all over here I figured it would be safer to use our battery camp light to give us a little romantic glow.”

Oh this is so sweet. I love it

I walked over to her and pulled her into my arms.

“And I love you.”

I didn’t waste any time, undressing both of us.  I picked
Kenna
an
up and carried her to our make shift bed.
Lying
on the bed together we kissed each other with all the love in our hearts
.
When we were force to
break the kiss to take a breath,
I turned
Kenna
so she was on all fours. I knelt behind her.

“Darlin, I need to be in you, now. I need to feel your heat around me.”

I reached around caressing her soft skin until I had found the apex of her. I separated her folds and began to stroke her gently. It only took moments, before soft cries of pleasure were passing her lips. I increased my speed and her body started moving in a way that told me she needed more. I entered her warmth with two fingers and she rode me until her release took her over.

I removed my hand grabbed both of her hips and entered her. She cried out and started rocking into my thrust. I was thrusting into her at a frantic pace, and she was right there with me, meeting me thrust for thrust. She screamed out my name as she was over taken by her orgasm. Her female heat she squeezed my erection so hard I only lasted three more thrust before I joined her. A primitive growl of triumph, escaped my lips and then I clasped on her back.

I rolled us to our side and engulfed her in my arms. I took the sleeping bag and covered our naked bodies.
Kenna
turned her head and gave me a tender kiss.

“I love you, Wyatt.

“I love you too, darlin”
