Then it changed from a penetrating sensation to a complete numbness; beginning in the side of his stomach and slowly creeping down towards his legs.

As the initial shock begun to subside, Sean felt what he thought was his right hip shattering like a porcelain vase. The muscles supporting his stomach wall flexed, in an attempt to support his injury, adding to the numbness that was slowly encircling his whole body.

He was surprised that he wasn’t in more pain. Apart from the crippling numbness, all he could feel was a slight burn from the bullet entry. Due to the flight or fight situation he was in, he could feel the surge of adrenaline as it surged through his system, helping to ease the pain Everything then seemed to go into slow motion, causing his central nervous system synapses to fire faster, like a high speed camera; producing the slow motion effect. Every breath was a knife turning in his lung. Sean began to lose his vision, a bright light erasing his visual field as he began to go into hypovolemic shock. Rachel watched in half fascination, half terror; everything slowing right down for her as well.

She watched in half fascination, half terror. Everything slowed right down.

The shock and revelation was evident on his face; she had pulled the trigger. He didn’t make a sound. He tottered into the darkness. Instinctively she held her hand out to grab him but he wasn’t there. The water crashed against the rocks underneath the bridge. She yelled out his name but there was no answer. He was gone.

Rachel let the gun fall from her hand. She wasn’t sure if she had intentionally shot him or if something had taken over her body. The thought had been there, in her head.

As soon as he told her he couldn’t change, the thought had manifested itself deep into her cerebellum; a hushed and gentle reiteration that increased with each passing second to a piercing culmination.

Pull the trigger…pull the trigger…pull the trigger…you know you have to…just PULL THE TRIGGER! !

Rachel slumped onto the tarmac and stones. She stayed there staring into the black night. Her body soaked through from the rain. He would never hurt her again. Sean Fergus would never hurt anybody ever again.

About the Author

Born in 1979, Matilda Wren was the child of a policeman and a teacher; born and raised in the home county of Essex. She is a mother, daughter, sister, auntie and a best friend. As a smal child, she was always writing stories to be read.

After her two children were born, Matilda returned to university to read Psychology, gaining a Bacholor of Science degree.

Why do bad people exist? A question she has asked herself again and again; having long held an interest in human behaviour, in particular abnormal or anti-social conduct.

Whilst studying and practising Psychology for the past five years Matilda has been exposed to a variety of diverse forms of deviant behaviour which culminated in ‘When Ravens Fal ’ being created. As an avid fan of Dark Romance and Psychological Thrillers, She draws upon the inspiration she has already gained through authors of these genres and the knowledge and experience she gained from observing life and her work experience within various criminal settings.
