She picks up the Kama
Sutra and kisses close by my ear.

‘Give it a couple
of minutes then come to reception,’ she whispers, smoothing her hand over her
hair, rearranging herself for her public.

I scrub my hands
over my face once she’s left, wondering if I look like a man who’s just blown
his load in the library. I take my time, leaning my back against the books and
closing my eyes, recovering. Sylvie has turned out to be a girl that takes some
recovering from.

I find her
perched behind the reception desk a few minutes later, her pen and pad in front
of her again.

As I approach her,
she slides a note inside the book and smiles at me, the same professional smile
that she’s turned me on with for the last few weeks, only this time, her eyes
glitter bright and bold.

‘Just this, sir?’
she says, stamping the date inside the front page of the Kama Sutra and taking
my card. It’s an antiquated system, entirely in keeping with my vintage pin-up
librarian. I take the book when she pushes it towards me, and before I can think
of something suitable to say someone moves to stand alongside me, too impatient
to queue.

I leave because I
have no choice, but also because it’s the right time to go. I resist looking at
the book, sliding it inside my leather jacket, safe against my chest as I ride
home. The bike throbs beneath me, warm and loud, and I savour the freedom. Because
that’s what I am now. A free man.

Back home, I
chuck my keys down and drop down on the old sofa in my makeshift home. Just
looking at the book in my hands makes me grin, and on opening it, I find Sylvie’s
note tucked inside.

‘My turn to
choose next time. Page 72 is my personal favourite.’

I flick to the
page, then laugh and shake my head at both our synchronicity and her audacity.

How the hell does
she think we're going to be able to pull off The Crow in a public library?
