Ther
e’
s one more thing, Ms. King
.

I looked up expectantly.

Yo
u’
ll be traveling with Warren Brown
.

I dropped the papers I had been fumbling around with to the floor. They seemed to slide helplessly across the linoleum floor. I lowered my head and took my time picking up the papers, struggling to reign in my embarrassment and shock.  Charles Hill knealt down to help me clean up the hopeless mess.

I do
n’
t understand, sir
?
” I whispered.

Thankfully, he mistook my nervousness and his features softened from cut-throat boss to empathetic friend.

I do
n’
t either Melanie. Usually they just send one of the newer legal counsel minions to oversee these sort of assignments. But, Mr. Brown personally requested to take this trip with you and Craig
.

I just nodded along. Craig was the field journalist that I had worked with on several assignments. He was two years short of retirement and was easy to work with. He knew what he wanted and had grown past the diva stage that so many of the field journalists seemed to have. I preferred working with him and he seemed to think I was the only photographer worth a damn. So, it came as no surprise that we had been paired up on this assigned.

As Innis Communications grew to a monstrous size, a company policy was put in place, before I came on board, to have legal accompany us on any political or
challenging
trip. An executive officer had never accompanied an assignment. Ever.

I still had
n’
t said anything and just continued to fiddle mindlessly with the papers that were now haphazardly stacked on my desk.

Melanie, you and Craig are the best I have. So I do
n’
t need to remind you to stay on your A-game while out there. I want to make sure you leave an impression on Mr. Brown
.

I wanted to hide under my desk.

Yes, sir
.

Whatever he needs from you Melanie, you provide. Do you understand? I do
n’
t know why one of the dogs are getting their noses in our assignments now, but it ca
n’
t be good and I want to make sure he comes back happy
.

I understand
.
” I blushed wildly.

Charles looked like he wanted to say something else but fortunately finally left me alone at my desk as he headed back from wherever he came from. I dug frantically through my purse and found my phon
e
– four messages.

Im going to fuck you hard on my desk

I already have something in my drawer to tie you up with

Im bringing the blindfold too

Chuck must be talking to you now. Ill bring the blindfold to Rome too.

Im going to kill you!
I quickly texted him back.

Do
n’
t want to go to Rome with me?

I responded with a brief recap of the conversation I had with my boss and was awarded with several lo
l’
s in a row followed by another text.

Your boss is right, you should do everything I say.

As I finished editing photos I thought about Rome with Warren and my heart soared. Then, just as quickly as my happiness peaked I thought about six days of being thousands of miles away from Lilian again and my heart already began to ache from missing her. My endless world of never-ending heartache and half-fulfilled moments of happiness. I sent a quick message to Zach about my new assignment and he responded with just one message.

Ok

I dove into my work over the next several hours and even worked through lunch. What normally would have taken me an hour was taking me all morning and part of the afternoon. If I was
n’
t thinking about leaving Lilian again, I was thinking about being in Rome with Warren. Would we have any alone time? Would we risk staying in the same hotel room together? When I was
n’
t thinking of Rome I was thinking about the weekend and promises of blindfolds.

My phone chimed again, snapping me out of my daydreams.

Left a note on your car. You probably should remove it before someone sees. ;)

I jumped in my seat and looked around quickly. I hurried to the car, wondering why Warren was being so reckless today. I saw the folded slip of paper underneath the windshield wiper and breath a sigh of relief. It did
n’
t stop me from running to the car and snatching the paper and opening it.

I like the skirt you’re wearing. Easy access. I think you should bend over. - W.

I gasped. But before I could turn around to see where Warren was. Because, clearly, he was watching me. I felt his weight against my back, pressing me against my car. My heart accelerated, pounding in my chest. I attempted to turn around to face him but he just pressed himself against me, pinning me forward. A small part of me wondered if maybe someone else stood behind me, guised as Warren. Yet, I knew better. The unknowing still sent a strange, invigorating thrill through me.

His hand wrapped gently around my waist and I closed my eyes. This was so, so dangerous. His other hand reached down my right leg and lifted my skirt, revealing my bare bottom. His hand trailed around to my front and teased me tenderly and I sighed against him, half collapsing backward into his body. My senses were on high alert as I could smell his cologne. He trailed kisses down my neck and along my collarbone.

Melanie, do you want me
?
” he asked against my ear.

I nodded.

Do you want me
?
” He slid his finger inside of me and a moan escaped me.

Yes, please
,
” I begged.

He turned me around and I looked into his warm green eyes that sparkled in mischief in delight. Again, his fingers found his way inside me and teased me eagerly.

What are you doing to me
?
” I asked.

Everything yo
u’
ve already done to me
.
” He kissed me softly before stepping back.

I still leaned against my car, my skirt crooked around my waist. But, I did
n’
t care.

I told you, Melanie. Until you are begging for it this weekend
.
” He smiled from ear to ear. If I could throw something at him I would.

Warren
.
” I could
n’
t help but put my hands on my hips, as if I were scolding him.

His laugh was loud and hearty and I could
n’
t help but smile. His laugh was one of my favorite things in the world and I could listen to it all day. You could
n’
t help but laugh or smile when he did. His happiness was infectious. Not only to me, but everyone that came in contact with him. He never noticed his affect on anyone, which only made him more endearing. Me on the other hand. I was like wallpaper.

Then, I heard footsteps in the distance in the parking lot and I froze. He raised his eyebrows at me daringly and I just frowned at him. I quickly straightened out my skirt and shoved at him jokingly as I walked quickly back to the lobby before anyone saw us.  I heard him laugh again as I hurried away, my legs shaky under me.

My phone chimed again as I rode the elevator back up to the eighth floor.

I like that you did
n’
t wear underwear today Mel - means I just need to come after you again

I fell against the elevator wall. I was
n’
t sure if
I’
d make it until the weekend. I was half-tempted to continue riding the elevator to the twenty-fourth floor and wait in his office naked and see how he reacts to that. That thought had me half laughing as the elevator doors opened and then my laughter quickly evaporated.

Zach
!

He must have been waiting for the elevator. But, why was he on my floor?

Mel? I was just going to see if I could find you. I saw your car here so I thought yo
u’
d be at your desk. Then, when you were
n’
t I figured I just missed you
.

Uh, yeah - I um, just went for a walk and some fresh air
.

My heart raced in my chest nervously.

Wait, is Lil
-

Lilian is fine, sh
e’
s still in school. I feel like I have
n’
t seen you in a while and thought we could go have some coffee or something
.

Yeah, tha
t’
d be great
.
” I self-consciously smoothed my skirt and played with my hair. I had no idea what I looked like
.“
You do
n’
t have to work today
?

We have a new client on sixth. Kind of works out. Now we can see more of each other while I work on this case
.

My phone chimed. I slid it into my purse.

Do
n’
t need to get that
?
” Zach asked, watching me as he stepped back into the elevator.

Um, no. But, I do need to let Charles know
I’
m stepping back out for a bit.
I’
ll meet you in the lobby
?

Zach nodded and pressed the elevator button. As soon as the doors sealed shut I took off running to the ladies room. Surprisingly, other than looking flushed, I looked normal. I spritzed some perfume on me to cover Warrens cologne and ran my fingers through my hair. I sent a text to Charles telling him
I’
d be stepping out for a few and then headed down to the lobby. My heart was racing the entire way down. Zach showing up was completely out of character. I racked my brain trying to remember when was the last time he had visited me at the office and I could
n’
t think of a single time. He did
n’
t even come to our Christmas parties because he was usually working a case.

The elevator doors open and Zach stood in the lobby, leaning against the counter talking to
Stu. For a moment my heart fluttered. I had a flash of why I had fallen for Zach. He was charming. He now leaned on one elbow and I could see the thread of muscles through his fitted dress shirt, which he now wore casually. The sleeves were rolled up to his elbows and the top of his shirt unbuttoned. His jacket and tie were probably thrown in the back of his Mercedes.

St
u’
s laugh boomed through the lobby and I could
n’
t help but smile.

There you are kitten
,
” Zach said as he saw me watching them.

He had
n’
t called me kitten in years. Tears prickled the corners of my eyes as I approached him.

You okay
?
” he asked, as he led me out the front lobby doors, his hand resting on the small of my back.

You have
n’
t called me that in a long time
,
” I whispered.

I have
n’
t, have I
?

We stepped outside on the sidewalk and Zach suddenly pulled me toward him, stopping me.

He pressed my face between his hands and memories came rushing back to me. Memories of our life before. His scent, the way he held my face, the way his face crinkled around his baby blues that would send any woma
n’
s heart thrumming.

What are you thinking
?
” he asked.

His lips brushed against mine, startling me. My husband.

Yo
u’
re just surprising me is all
.

I’
ve missed you
,
” he whispered in my ear and a tear escaped.

He wiped the tear with his thumb. His eyes were sad and the light blue seemed to darken as he looked at me, realization dawning on him.

Melanie
,
” he sighed
.“I’
m sorry
,
” he whispered. His eyebrows furrowed together.

I just looked up at him questioningly, not understand the depth of his sorrow. Did he know?

Zach
?
” I looked up at him
.“
Zach? Wha
t’
s wrong
?
