Acknowledgments
Mrs. Engels
is a work of fiction. It has been enriched by the work of many scholars, historians, philosophers, and observers from the nineteenth century, the twentieth century, and today. It owes its greatest debts to Tristram Hunt, Roy Whitfield, David McLellan, Isaiah Berlin, Yvonne Kapp, F. H. Peters, Alistair Horne, Liza Picard, Judith Flanders, Asa Briggs, A. N. Wilson, Jerry White, Alan Kidd, John Newsinger, Jack Doughty, Henry Mayhew, and, of course, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.
I owe a great debt of gratitude to Iñaki Moraza, Trezza Azzopardi, and Rebecca Stott for their help with things both on and off the page; and to my agent Rebecca Carter and my editors, Philip Gwyn Jones and Pat Strachan, for their unswerving faith and resolve. I owe further thanks to the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia for its generous financial backing.
