The Neighbor

Chapter 1

“Why are you fucking with my high? My give a shit meter is running on empty, take your ass on and don’t bother me anymore.”

“You’ve got quite the mouth on you don’t you little girl”

“What’s it to ya?” She posed up like she was ready to go a round or two.

“Nothing, nothing at all. Just a word of warning, you keep pushing you’re going to get exactly what you’ve been asking for. I hope you can handle it then.” I gave her body the once over, letting her know exactly what I was talking about.

“Big talk little man, Put up or shut up.” She thrust those babies of hers out towards me and I all but salivated, before turning away; pain in the ass. “I thought so, you’re nothing but talk.”

She went back to her weed smoking and pretending to ignore me. I don’t know what’s gotten into her lately. She’d gone from a sweet natured young woman, to this...this, pot-smoking harridan.

“You know, they didn’t make that shit legal just for you.” She puffed away on the joint and blew smoke at me.

“Whatever lieutenant, you’re just mad because you can’t arrest me. I bet you can’t wait to get those cuffs on me.” She was full of piss and vinegar today that’s for sure. I wonder what set her off this time? But I wasn’t about to ask.

I just shook my head and headed back over to my place. I’d only approached her because I was growing tired of contact highs.

Her bong or whatever the fuck it is was so powerful, the smoke leaves her pool area and makes its way through my kitchen window and permeates my whole house.

No matter how much I tell her that that’s not necessarily a good thing, for an officer of the law’s house to smell like a weed den, she just flounced off and did whatever the hell she wants anyway.

Three months ago she was the sweet college grad who’d just moved in next door. We use to chat with each other over the fence or sometimes one or the other of us would gravitate to the other’s backyard, and we’d enjoy a glass of wine under the stars.

I never made a move even though her fuck hot body made me hard as granite. She was a damn kid, twenty-two years old her whole life ahead of her. What would she want with a thirty three year old over worked cop?

We were becoming pretty good friends or so I thought, and then one day out of the blue she just changed on me completely.

Glad I dodged that bullet. She was ornery, nasty and confrontational. It was like that movie the roommate or whatever the hell.

She’s become this whole other entity overnight. I basically just stayed out of her way until I had to come over here and waste my breath yelling at her about her damn weed smoke.

She was right about one thing though, as bitchy as she had become, I would still give anything to see her locked to my bed with my cuffs.

Fuck, just the thought had me going hard. What’s new? I stay hard around her. Annoying ass female.

Chapter 2

I put in another long day. Middle of summer, the assholes come out to play.

The city had already had more than its fair share of murders for the year. Now extremely hot days back to back, coupled with a recession with no let up in sight, and you have a cocktail for disaster.

People’s fuses were very short these days, had been for a good two years now. It was my job to keep those streets safe. Well, me, and the men in my squad.

I was the head of a specialized team formatted by the governor. He’d handpicked the best of the best from a few houses around the state and brought us together to do the job the locals couldn’t seem to tackle.

It had meant a move, but that was no biggie. I had no real attachment to my last place of residence. My two sisters were married and living on opposite ends of the country and the folks had retired to Boca years ago.

The whole family got together for the holidays and one vacation a year, so it was no hardship for me to pull up stakes and head to the small town outside the city. Plus for what they were paying me I would’ve moved to Timbuktu.

The place was a cesspool when I first showed up. Crime ran rampant and from what I could see, the criminals had more control than the law.

It hadn’t taken me long to figure out why that was. It was because some of that law was playing both sides of the fence.

I’d already sent five men who’d once held high positions in the Bradshaw’s PD to jail.

I was sure there was more to come but it had only been a year and I wasn’t one to do a half ass job.

I wanted every last dirty cop off the streets. I wasn’t just interested in the street cop who was just following orders.

I was interested in the Sergeants, Lieutenants and Captains who had a hand in it to.

I was already getting death threats; the papers had labeled me the most hated man in the state.

I considered that a good thing. That’s another reason why I wouldn’t approach little Ms. Angelica. I didn’t want her caught in the crossfires of my disaster of a life.

She had her music blasting by the time I made it to my door. I looked back to catch her watching me with this look on her face.

I’d been seeing it a lot lately but I have no idea what it means. If she knew what her eyes were saying she’d never look at me again.

Some days it was all l could do not to climb through her window and fuck her into her bed. But nah, she wouldn’t be able to deal with my life.

Besides, lately she’s been giving me shit so I know for damn sure she isn’t interested.

***

“He’s such an ass it’s a wonder he can tie his shoes in the morning. Jerk. I flounced back down on my lounge chair and took another hit of my bong.

I’d started smoking this mess just to mess with my stuff shirt neighbor, but I kinda like it.

It saves me a lot of aggravation, not to mention the fact that it keeps me from murdering my neighbor in his sleep.

Or worst yet, raping him in the night. I’m such a fail, here I am mooning over a man who doesn’t even know I exist when I have offers lined up and down the whole neighborhood.

I couldn’t even go to the grocery store without getting hit on. But none of those men had windblown chestnut brown hair and hazel eyes that looked into my soul.

Or that body with corded muscles and that tattoo that covered a part of his arm, or the nipple piercing that I’d spied the first time I’d seen him shirtless in his yard.

That had given my ideas about other piercings that might be hiding somewhere on his body. Shit I’ve gone and made myself hot.

I hate him the pig. If that wasn’t bad enough, he had the nerve to bring some strange woman home with him a few weeks ago and sleep with her not once, but twice that I know of.

After the second time, I couldn’t bring myself to peep out my window like I usually did when I heard his car pull into his driveway at night, when he came home.

I’m such an ass I still lay awake late at night waiting for him to come home before I can go to sleep. Why did he have to be so beautiful?

Dammit Angelica, Caleb Thorpe is not worth the time of the day, stop mooning over him and go find you a real man.

I decided to take my advice once and for all. It could be the weed talking, but I was gonna run with it.

I picked up my phone from the chair next to me and called my friend Karen. Karen was my go to girl when I wanted to break out of my shell. She was the only one who could get me to go out of my comfort zone.

“Karen what are you doing tonight?”

“Whatever it is that you want me to.” She already had a ring of excitement in her voice; I guess I was pretty obvious in my approach.

“I want to go dancing, I want to let my hair down and get wild.”

“Hot dog that sounds like a plan. Leave everything to me I know just the place. Give me half an hour and I’ll be there to get you ready.”

“I’ll be waiting.” I hung up and finished my bowl with a cough. I heard a window slam next door.

Good I hope you get high and shoot yourself in the foot. I regretted the thought as soon as it left my head. It scares me the risks he takes for his job.

Though I admire the hell out of him for what he does, putting his life on the line day in and day out for complete strangers.

I follow all his exploits in the papers and on the evening news. You could say he’s one of the reasons I had chosen to move here.

Not the man himself, well not exactly, but his office. After reading about his war on crime in his streets, I’d decided it was the right place for me.

Imagine my surprise when I ended up living right next door to him. It was divine providence, or so I used to think. That was before he had become the asshole jerk next door.

I picked up my stuff from around the pool and headed inside to wait for Karen. Her mess will take a whole evening.

She loves to treat me like a little china doll. Karen was my roommate in college; she lives in the next town over and is always game for a good time.

No one would ever believe that she’s a topnotch up and coming lawyer. When court’s not in session, the hair comes down and the hemline goes up. I love that crazy girl.

Chapter 3

“Lieu?”

“Brady?” I rubbed the sleep from my eyes as I tried to see the clock.

“Yeah, uh, we got a situation.” I was already getting out of bed and looking for the jeans I’d dropped only a few short hours ago.

My pain in the ass neighbor had decided to take pity on me and keep her claptrap music down to a minimum, and I was taking advantage.

“What kinda situation?”

“It’s your neighbor.”

“My what?” I tried to hotfoot it to my front window to see what was going on with the elderly couple on the other side of me.

“Yeah, the one that’s always giving you shit.”

My heart did a weird flip-flop in my chest. “What...what happened?” I stopped in my tracks as all sorts of disasters ran through my head.

“She’s about to get herself in a whole heap of trouble.”

“Stop talking in fucking riddles and tell me what the fuck is going on.” My heart was about to knock a hole in my chest.

“Let’s just say we’re down at Mooney’s bar and there’s drinking and a naked chest involved.”

“Whose naked chest?”

“Hers.”

I slammed the phone down and ran for the door. Don’t ask me why the fuck I cared.

She’s nothing but a thorn in my side; maybe I should leave her to her own devices.

Somehow that didn’t sit well with me though. And why the fuck was she showing her tits in Mooney’s place?

I got there in less time that it would’ve taken because I took the Harley. It wouldn’t do to get caught speeding but…

The music was ten decibels above deafening; I didn’t have to look too far to find her.

She and that friend of hers were the center of attention. She was in the middle of a group of muscle bound fuckers with debauchery on their minds.

I didn’t stop to think, just acted. Seeing her there in her too tight mini and the mid-riff baring top made me see red.

Her hair was going every which way, as she moved to the music, and if she raised her arms any higher those D cups of hers were gonna be giving a show.

“Let’s go stripper girl.”

“Hey, hands off asshole. Oh it’s you, the Uber asshole. What do you want?” She wasn’t too drunk to give me shit.

“You coming?” I looked over my shoulder at her friend who was grinning at me for some fucked up reason.

“I’ve got a ride thanks, just make sure our girl gets home okay.” She went back to dancing while I dragged the other one kicking and screaming off the dance floor.

I caught sight of Brady and a few of the other guys at a corner table. They raised their beers and I gave them a nod before heading out with her in my arms.

“Fuck, I should’ve brought the truck.” I stopped next to the bike.

“I don’t want to go anywhere with you, I’m going back inside, the party was just getting started.”

“No you’ve had enough fun for one night.”

“You’re not my dad, I don’t have to answer to you.”

“You’ve got that shit right, now get on the fucking bike and hold on.” I had to literally wrestle her onto the bike and then wrap her arms around my middle.

She sat back there stiff as a board for all of five minutes, before the night air, or the booze knocked the wind out of her sails and she relaxed against me. Big fucking mistake.
