She looked away, then breathed out roughly. “I don’t know, Natches,†she final y whispered, shaking her head. “Right now I just don’t

know. I know when I open the banquet room for more tables, I’m going to need more help. If I give up the managerial side and just take over the

paperwork and other business areas, then it wil free my time up some. I’m not thinking past that right now.â€

She couldn’t, until she knew if there was a baby or not.

“She’s not going anywhere. I told you that,†Alex stated, stil watching her.

Natches flicked Alex a look, then turned his gaze back to her. Thoughtful, almost calculating, his silent regard made her nervous as hel . Natches

crossed his ankle over his knee and watched her intently.

“I have work to do.â€

“We’re talking,†Natches informed her tightly.

“No, we’re not talking. You’re trying to intimidate me. Both of you are and I’m not having it.†She rounded on him, anger pulsing in

every beat of her blood now. “Why? Last I heard you wanted me away from him anyway because he was too old for me.†She pointed imperiously to

Alex. “So why the hel are you letting a damned hickey decide if he gets to watch you knock me down a peg or two?â€

Hurt resounded through her. She felt berated, humiliated, like a child that had stepped out of line. And he had done it in front of her lover.

“Janey, that isn’t what I’m doing.†Natches stiffened as Alex frowned back at her.

“That’s what both of you are doing,†she rasped. “Treating me like a child who doesn’t have the good sense to run her own life. I

don’t need you to tel me where to stay or how to make a decision, Natches. And I sure as hel don’t need you tel ing me how to do it.†She

turned to Alex, angrier at him perhaps than she was at Natches.

Natches was her brother. He just didn’t know how to act any other way. But she had expected more from Alex. Expected him to let her be a woman,

his woman, if only for a little while. But one who had his respect if nothing else.

“Janey . . .†Natches was rising from his chair, that determined look in his eyes again.

“Go to hel ,†she muttered. “Burn the damned place to the ground. See if I care what you do with it. But right now I have a job to do. And that

doesn’t include fighting with you.â€

He jerked to his feet.

“The next moron that grips my arm and drags me somewhere is getting clawed,†she warned him furiously. “Touch me, either one of you, and I

swear to God, I’m going to get violent.â€

She had to fight the tears, the sob that trapped in her throat, because her brother was doing the one thing guaranteed to come between them. He was

trying to control her.

She strode quickly to the door, aware of Alex straightening, his body tense. Jerking it open, she turned to him, staring up at him, hurting inside so bad

she wanted to find a corner to hide in rather than face everyone who had watched Natches drag her around like a little kid.

“Sleeping with you doesn’t make me your puppet,†she told him roughly. “Never imagine it does, Alex. And the next time you sic my

brother on me, then you won’t be anywhere near me. I don’t care if the entire Army National Guard is stalking me.â€

She stepped back into the hal , slammed the door furiously behind her, and walked quickly back to the restaurant.

As the door slammed, Alex turned slowly to Natches. He was standing in front of the chair, his expression heavy, lined now with something akin to grief.

He’d had no idea what the other man was doing. Natches had cal ed as he arrived at the restaurant with a brief “We have a problem. Meet me

at the restaurant.â€

Hel , he should have demanded explanations first.

“I should kick your ass, Natches,†he growled. “What the fuck was in your mind? Did you real y think this was going to get me thrown out of her

life without hurting her?â€

Natches ran his hands wearily over his hair and scowled back at Alex. “Maybe I wanted to see if you were wil ing to fight for her. You’re just

going to let her walk away, aren’t you? Fucking tough-assed Alex Jansen. Doesn’t need any one woman. You’re going to break her heart.â€

Alex shook his head. “If I break her heart, she’l survive it. If you break it, it wil scar her forever. Is that what you want?â€

Alex didn’t know whether to hit the other man or feel sorry for him. Natches looked as though someone had just dropped a boulder on him. Alex

understood the feeling. Janey had managed to do the same damned thing to him that morning.

Natches sneered back at him. “She wasn’t like this until you came around. She used to listen to me.â€

“And now she doesn’t obey you so wel , is that it, Natches?†Alex asked, his tone acerbic. “Pul this shit on her again, and I’l send you

home to Chaya with a few less perfect fucking teeth. Now I’m going to go try dinner.â€

“Alex.â€

He paused before turning back to Janey’s brother.

Natches was a man tormented, and Alex understood it, to a degree. Alex’s sister had married into the Mackays eventual y. But he’d had to

watch a part of her die for years when she was younger, because of the very same man she had ultimately married. He hadn’t forgotten what it felt

like.

He shook his head. “I’m serious about this, Natches. Just as I’m serious about her. I didn’t walk into this intending on walking away

later.â€

“You love her?†Natches frowned, an edge of disbelief in his voice.

Love. Son of a bitch. That word was being thrown around like a bone to a favorite hound.

“As much as I can love anyone,†he final y stated wearily. “I’m committed. That’s going to have to be enough for you.â€

He was going to have to find a way to make it enough for Janey.

Janey wasn’t in the mood to be pacified. She was aware of Hoyt showing Natches and Alex to the table they had been given, close to the hal that

led to the restrooms and then the office. Just as she was aware of the waitress that rushed to serve them.

The little blonde was a favorite of customers at the restaurant. She was chatty, just a little flirty, and always polite. Tonight, she was more than a little flirty.

She was al smiles and batting eyelashes. It was enough to have Janey gritting her teeth in irritation. Not that either Natches or Alex seemed to be encouraging it. Alex watched Janey. Natches glared at Alex. And weren’t they al just having a damned good time.

Shaking her head, Janey turned the hostess station over to Hoyt and made her way back to the kitchen to check things there. Desmond was a

godsend. Though he was original y from New York, she’d managed to snag him when she caught a sniff of a rumor that he was looking to take over

his own kitchen, to rule his own roost, so to speak. She’d made him an offer, done a lot of begging, and promised him total control if he would pay

attention to more country cuisine than international and find a way to blend them when possible.

The dishes he came up with astounded her. Fresh greens fried in garlic and olive oil rather than the traditional country favorite of boiling them down first.

Fried fresh, tossed, and served with crisp fried chicken, rol s, and mashed potatoes with a bit of cheddar cheese and sour cream added.

Traditional and unique. It was becoming one of the favorite dishes prepared there.

As usual, the kitchen was running like a wel -oiled engine. The staff was too scared of the short, volatile little Italian-American to let it run any other way.

“Desmond, you’re my angel,†Janey declared, grinning as he turned and swatted at her, though his black eyes glinted with mischief as his

wife, Angelina, rol ed her eyes.

“Janey, his ego is bad enough.†Angelina laughed.

“And his food is perfect.†Janey blew him a kiss. “Besides, we both know you love his ego.†She wagged her brows suggestively, then

ducked out of the doorway as Angelina laughingly threw a dish towel at her.

Moving through the dining room, she stopped at several tables, chatted, and made certain everything was running smoothly there before making her

way back to the hostess station to relieve Hoyt.

“Everything okay?†she asked as he eased back from the smal , waist-high counter and the electronic table display that sat on it.

“Everything’s running smooth,†he assured her. “Natches and Major Jansen are enjoying their meal. I replaced their server with one of the

young men.†He frowned. “I’ve warned Tabitha about her flirtatiousness, if you don’t mind.â€

Janey stared back at Hoyt’s sincere, concerned expression and had to bite back a protest. Hoyt thought the Mackay cousins and Alex Jansen

were some kind of superheroes.

“Fine,†she final y said. She’d talk to Tabitha before she left. The girl was one of her better waitresses, and it was her friendliness and

outgoing personality that had many customers asking for her by name.

Hoyt nodded and returned to the checkout counter while Janey turned and tried not to stare at Alex. He was obviously enjoying his steak. No doubt on

the house and compliments of Natches. She shook her head. At least she didn’t have to worry about feeding him later. But it didn’t solve her

more immediate problem of how exactly to deal with her new lover.

It was a problem that continued to plague her, especial y while Alex and Natches lingered, talking to Hoyt in the lobby as Tabitha covered the register.

They lingered too long to suit her. They made her nervous. Thankful y, there were no comments that could cause Natches to lose his temper. Or Alex.

She knew what Natches was capable of. He would break bones. Alex, she wasn’t as certain of. There were times she wondered if he wasn’t the

more dangerous of the two.

She knew he was.

Once they were gone, she breathed a sigh of relief. And hours later, her calf muscles aching from strain, she turned the final lock on the doors and

headed back to the office. And hopeful y a glass of wine.

She could feel Alex waiting for her before she ever reached the office door. She could feel her body, as tired as it was, preparing for him. Standing

outside the door, she pressed her forehead against the wal , closed her eyes, and tried to force back needs that she’d never had to fight before.

Feelings she hadn’t known before.

Right now al she wanted to do was curl in his arms, have him hold her. Then she wanted him to fuck her until she was screaming, begging for more.

And she wanted to feel him coming inside her again. Feel that heated wash of possession, even knowing the danger of it.

Tomorrow, she was going to have to cal the doctor, and get in quickly. If she wasn’t pregnant now, then she soon would be. She had a feeling

Alex’s little soldiers were just as effective at their job as he was at his.

She pressed her hands against the wal , palms flat, and reined in the tears that wanted to escape. She was final y free. She could final y feel a measure

of security, and what had she done? She’d gone and let herself love a man who didn’t believe in love. Who didn’t believe in giving himself,

only his body.

And Janey didn’t think that luscious body was going to be enough to ease the ache building inside her. Because she wanted, hungered for, so

much more from him.

And yet he was offering so much more than she had ever expected. A husband, children of her own, a chance to build the life she had dreamed of—if

only she could ignore the fact that he simply “cared for†her.

She felt the sigh that eased from her chest. It felt lost. She felt lost. Amid a county that wanted to fry her for her father’s sins, simply because there

was no one else to torment, and emotions she couldn’t seem to control anymore, Janey could feel herself spiraling out of control.

It wasn’t hysteria rising inside her. It wasn’t anger. It was something so deep, so primitive, that she couldn’t explain it, couldn’t describe

it, even to herself. It was a need to mark Alex, to imprint on him in the same way he had on her.

A damned love bite on his neck wasn’t enough. She wanted his heart.

She lifted her head and pushed back from the wal . Gripping the handle, she turned it slowly, opened the door and stepped inside.

And there he was, waiting for her. Stretched out on the couch, one arm behind his head as he read some kind of electronics magazine. And it must

have been damned stimulating reading, because he was hard.

Janey closed the door and leaned against it, staring at the thick wedge of his cock beneath his jeans as he laid the magazine careful y on the glass-

topped table.

“What do you want, baby?†His voice was a growl, a hard, rough rasp of male heat.

What did she want? Oh, she knew what she wanted, and she knew in what order she wanted it.

She licked her lower lip. “I want you. In my mouth.â€

He rose to his feet. “Let’s go.†He held his hand out to her.

Janey shook her head. “I don’t want to wait. I want you here. Right here.â€

He moved to her, slowly, as her gaze lifted to his. “Do you want to get naughty, sweetheart?â€

Her lips tilted. “I’m a Mackay, Alex. I don’t want to get naughty; I’m naughty by birth. By genetics. Remember?â€

She wasn’t talking about her parentage. Her cousins were considered three of the wildest men in the state of Kentucky until they fel in love. And

she, the lone female, had been left behind. Forced to hold herself back. Not from sex, but from being herself. From letting that core of the woman she was

free. And with this man, it could be free. She might have to protect her heart, but he held her body in the palm of his hand. And she was determined to hold
