Hearing that soft groan in her throat, he
took her mouth again, hungry to taste what he’d waited so long to
possess, giving in to all of the desire that had built up in him
since the first day they met.
And when he parted from her, only now
hearing the clapping and whistling lower in pitch, Marisa lingered,
her eyebrows drawn together tightly, as though reluctant to awaken
from a wonderful dream.
“Well,” he said, sighing. “I guess my job
here is done.”
Startled, Marisa snapped awake. “What?”
Watching the anxiety on her face, he broke
out laughing. She shoved him in a playful manner, but he took the
opportunity to grasp her hand and interlace his fingers with hers.
He led her towards the front counter, where Damon laughed at
Kelsey, dismissing her with a wave of the hand, causing her to lean
over the counter.
“He’s Superman,” Damon said with great
passion. “He would crush Buffy. Besides, ‘Super’ is in his name.
What does Buffy have? ‘Buff’ as in nude? It wouldn’t even phase
him. X-ray vision, remember? He could see her naked any time he
wanted.”
Kelsey said, “She could defeat him if she
had the Scooby gang with her.”
“Scooby-Doo?” he asked, incredulous. “Yeah,
because he and Shaggy get super powers from toking it up in the
back of the Mystery Machine.”
“For your information, the Scooby gang
consists of Buffy’s best friend, Willow, who is an insanely
powerful witch who almost destroyed the world. And then
there’s–”
“Potions and charms?” he asked, raising his
voice. He waved his hands in front of her face. “Hello! The first
Superman movie with Christopher Reeve? The dude reversed time. Can
Buffy or Fred or Wilma do that?” He looked at her with a wistful
expression.
Grunting, Kelsey rolled her eyes, looking
furious. “Who gave Superman all those powers? A genie from a
bottle?”
Alex broke out laughing and turned to find
Marisa doing the same. It was amazing to finally have her in his
life the way that he’d always dreamed.
“A genie?” Damon asked. “Okay, you’re on a
deserted island, you find a magic lantern, and you rub it. A
genie
pops out and offers you three wishes. What would you
wish for?”
“I’ll need only one wish: a boat to get
outta there. Why?”
Damon’s eyebrows lifted in amazement and one
side of his lips twisted into a miraculous smile, free of
cynicism.
“Oh, shit!” Alex said.
“What’s wrong?” asked Marisa.
Damon turned to Alex. “Did you hear that?
Out of all the women I’ve asked that question to, your sister comes
up with the right answer. What are the odds?”
“No way,” Alex said, approaching his friend
to dislodge his exhilaration. “Not my sister. Anyone else on Earth.
Just not my sister.”
