“Johnson’s ultimate ambition was to get a club in New York,” wrote McGraw in his memoirs. “If he succeeded, this meant, of course, that Baltimore
again would be dropped and someone would be left holding the bag. Baltimore was the weakest team in attendance. If it failed to hold its own, that would be a good excuse to the public for dropping it.”
The McGraw action set in motion a series of events essentially rendering the Orioles impotent. Six more players were released, among them Roger Bresnahan, Joe McGinnity, Kelley, and Robinson, and a majority of stock in the team was transferred to Andrew Freedman, owner of the Giants. Freedman now had a piece of the American League.
Decimated, the Orioles were restocked with players essentially given away by the other teams in order to play out the schedule. Not surprisingly, they limped to a last-place finish and were done.
Rather than rebuild in Baltimore, Johnson set about putting a team in New York. He would have eight months to get a franchise established, stock it with players, find owners,

locate grounds for a ballpark, hire a manager, and start selling tickets.
In 1902, Johnson’s league drew more than two million fans, almost four hundred thousand more than the National League, even without New York. He was ready for a fight.
After the 1902 season, Freedman sold his Giants to the Reds’ owner, John Brush, who in turn unloaded his Cincinnati stock. But Freedman, with his strong political connections, would remain a nuisance to Johnson as a member of the Giants’ board of directors.
The sale came about despite the efforts of another suitor for the Giants, a young Manhattan congressman named Jacob Ruppert Jr. He would be heard from again.
With just days left in the 1902 season, James C. Kennedy, a sports promoter, of “whom no better man could be found to manage successfully a rival baseball club in this city,” emerged as a man to possibly head a new team.
“I am not at liberty to say where they will locate,” said Kennedy. “For the present, let me tell you that we have options of three sites, one of which is admirably situated, and when its location is made known will cause no little surprise. New York is not a sentimental city, it is a business center, and its people will demand the best article and support those who give it.”
Kennedy had been working hard, traveling to Chicago to meet with Ban Johnson, beginning to make plans to run the new team should it become a reality.
“Kennedy’s name should be a sufficient guarantee to the baseball public that the American League means business,” said someone with knowledge of the American League’s thinking.
Jimmy Kennedy, thirty-five, was considered by most to be the new team’s logical owner. He was a boxing promoter at the Seaside Athletic Club in Coney Island and ran the very popular Six-Day Bicycle Races at Madison Square Garden in partnership with Patrick Powers.
Kennedy was all set to take command of the team, and his name began appearing more and more in the newspapers as the logical choice. Yet he seemed wedded to playing home games on Manhattan Field, presenting it as if it were already a fait accompli.
Manhattan Field had actually been a major league facility in 1889–90; the Giants played there prior to moving into the newly constructed (and adjacent) Polo Grounds. But despite Kennedy’s plans, Manhattan Field had been leased to the National League as parking and the American League was unlikely to secure it. Furthermore, although it was now unused land, the free vantage points overlooking it hardly made it a worthy site for paid admissions. There wasn’t enough time—or money—to build a grand structure to block the views.
Kennedy left by steamship for Europe at the end of October, noting, “I have not seen Ban Johnson this week, but that fact of my going away on a business trip does not mean that I have abandoned the idea of managing the new club. Matters are at a standstill regarding that venture, and nothing can be done for a few weeks toward a definite settlement as to its management. I will be back again within four weeks, and when I return, things may have shaped themselves so that they can be given publicity.”
Yet Kennedy’s opportunity to own the team was gone in a week. (And, as fate would have it, Kennedy was found dead in a subway car in lower Manhattan in April 1904.)
While he was abroad, Ban Johnson was spotted looking at other sites. South Field, on 116th and Broadway, was land owned by Columbia University. But Columbia would lose its tax break if admission was charged on its property. No good. One Hundred Twenty-sixth Street and First Avenue would require a road closing. No good. One Hundred Forty-fifth Street at the Harlem River merited a look. It was just two blocks from the elevated
rail. But, no good. At 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue was the Curtis estate; the wealthy August Belmont Jr. (who would build Belmont racetrack in 1905) was willing to buy the property and an adjacent piece of property owned by the Rapid Transit Company and lease it to the American League. But Andrew Freedman, serving as a director of the Rapid Transit Company, refused to lease the strip of land, causing Belmont to step aside.
The American League had a ten-year option on land on Berkeley Oval, in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx (the site of all the city’s top track meets), and there was talk of Ambrose Park in south Brooklyn. Both Kennedy and Johnson found them too far removed, and the search continued.
Johnson, meanwhile, focused on lining up players. Johnson later wrote that
Jack O’Connor, catcher for Barney Dreyfuss’ Pittsburgh team, had been on friendly terms with us for some time and had kept us posted on the desires of the players to switch to our league.
When we decided to … form the New York club, I wired O’Connor that we were prepared to raid the Pittsburgh team, and for him to make arrangements to let me know how the land lay. I was going to Atlantic City with Charley Somers [owner of the Cleveland team and a major benefactor of the American League] and … the train took us through Pittsburgh.
In the train station O’Connor found us and as he passed us he spoke out of the corner of his mouth, pretending not to see us.
“They are wise to us,” he said. “Get in a cab at once and go to the Lincoln Hotel.”
My telegram [to O’Connor] had gone astray. It had fallen into the hands of the Pittsburgh club officials or an operator had tipped off Dreyfuss that the American League was prepared to strike.
We met O’Connor at the Lincoln Hotel and he urged us to take immediate action if we wanted to sign any of the Pittsburgh players. The Pittsburgh club, forewarned by the telegram, was trying to forestall our raid, he informed us, by getting the signatures of the players on iron-clad contracts. [O’Connor would be suspended by Pittsburgh.]
We realized that it was the time to act and before the next day dawned we had scoured Pittsburgh for the stars we wanted and had signed … [Wid] Conroy, [Jack] Chesbro, [Jesse] Tannehill, [Lefty] Davis and several other players, seven or eight in all.
I postponed my trip to Atlantic City and decided to go to Cleveland. There still remained the task of giving the players [who had] signed their advance money to bind the contracts and not wanting to let the enemy know that I was in Pittsburgh. I took elaborate steps to get out of town without anyone seeing me. I left the hotel by the freight elevator and went to the train by a circuitous path. I climbed aboard the train and was congratulating myself on having outwitted the opposition when out there behind the corner of the coach I saw Harry Pulliam [secretary] of the National League. I certainly had gone to a lot of trouble to run right into the eyes of the enemy.
Johnson evaded Pulliam and pulled off his caper. In December, Pulliam was elected National League president. At their league meeting, the National League owners adopted a committee “for the purpose of conferring with representatives of the American League … to ascertain upon what basis [peace] can be accomplished.”
The resolution was in sight. The National League wanted no part of a bidding war.
Johnson was staying at the Criterion Hotel in Longacre Square (soon to be renamed Times Square) for his own league meeting on December 11 when he saw the three-man committee from the National League approaching him.
“I knew in an instant the purpose of their visit … They informed me they composed a committee of the old league to wait on me and see if peace terms could be arranged. We’ve always advocated peace,” he told reporters.
Now that the other side is willing to meet us I feel confident that we can come to an amicable arrangement whereby clashing of playing dates can be prevented … We have careful preparations to place an American League club on Manhattan Island, and we would have announced our plans and the location of our playing grounds ere this were it deemed advisable by our legal representatives.
We will hold the American League annual meeting here within two weeks, and then everything will be ready for the widest publicity. New York’s baseball enthusiasts can rest assured that we will do our utmost to give them first-class baseball and as the American League has fulfilled all that it promised so far, there is
no good reason why we cannot continue to do so. We are fully prepared to go our way, whether it be peaceful or warlike, but we are now, as always, anxious for peace on any fair business basis.
These salvos eventually led to a January 19 agreement in Cincinnati. Terms included acceptance of a team in New York and the AL’s agreement not to place one in Pittsburgh or Baltimore. There was also a matter of settling contract claims with those who had jumped prior to 1902, and those after.
Two teams opposed the agreement, the Giants being one of them. But John Brush, seeing its passage a certainty, gave in to make acceptance unanimous.
Now came the work of finding owners, a manager, more players for the team, and a place for them to play—with the season only three months away.
GAMBLING IN NEW YORK was illegal at the turn of the century but still operated fairly openly, thanks in part to cushy relationships between gambling hall owners and the city’s politicians. Many of these gambling dens were tucked into the area along Broadway from Battery Park to the streets of the mid-Twenties.
There, card games like faro were played and betting on sports was enjoyed, especially horse racing, where results were sent by telegraph from tracks around the country.
Big Tim Sullivan, a big shot in the New York Democratic political machine known as Tammany Hall, had managed to get as far as the U.S. Congress and was considered the man to know if you wanted to make sure your business wasn’t shut down. Nobody missed his annual public pig roasts. Little Tom Foley was another politico to know. They could open doors.
This brings us to Frank Farrell, “the Pool Room King,” thirty-seven years old, one of the more prominent owners of gambling houses in New York, and a good friend of Sullivan’s. He had grown up on the Lower East Side of the city with Al Smith, the future governor and presidential candidate. Farrell owned racehorses, including the champion Roseben. The biggest of his slews of gambling houses, a veritable palace on Thirty-third Street with steel doors and connecting passageways, had been raided by district attorney William Travers Jerome. Apparently, someone had forgotten to make a payoff.
No problem. Farrell knew Big Bill Devery, thirty-eight, who in one breath would be called the greatest police chief New York ever had and in another the most corrupt. The two were not mutually exclusive.
Farrell was sued in March of 1903 to recover losses sustained at one Commercial Clerks Club, a gambling den that he was said to own. Although newspapers the year before announced FARRELL’S NEW GAMBLING PALACE [OPENS] AT 33 WEST 33RD, Farrell denied ever having been in a pool hall, let alone owning one. He’d never seen a roulette wheel and couldn’t recall ever having placed a bet even though he owned racehorses. He was acquitted.
Just a few days after the January 19 meeting in Cincinnati, Joe Vila had a conversation with his old pal Ban Johnson.
“You’ve got your franchise, Ban, do you have an owner? Is the league going to own it?”
Vila was asking not as a reporter but as a broker.
“I’d like to introduce you to Frank Farrell. He’s a sportsman. Owns some saloons and gambling halls. Owns the famous racehorse Roseben, in fact. He’s got money.”
Actually, Farrell owned as many as 250 “pool halls” at which all sorts of commerce took place. If it hugged the line between legal and illegal, you could probably find it at a Farrell establishment. You could go in, do some opium, win at roulette, spend your winnings on a prostitute, and arrange for a backroom abortion all at once. Or so it was said.
Johnson was, nevertheless, curious to meet Farrell. Vila arranged a meeting.
At the meeting, Farrell presented Johnson with a certified check for $25,000 and said, “Take that as a guarantee of good faith, Mr. Johnson. If you don’t put this ball club across, keep it.”
“That’s a pretty big forfeit, Mr. Farrell,” Johnson replied.
At which point Vila said, “He bets that much on a race, Ban!”
Farrell told Johnson that he would bring in Big Bill Devery as a partner. He had it all figured out: While he could afford to buy the team on his own, Devery would bring in the political muscle he needed to overcome the Giants’ behind-the-scenes opposition.
Johnson had a problem. The point of his league, apart from being a profitable business, was to do away with the unseemly behavior of fans of the National League.
And now he was talking to a guy who owned gambling houses and might bet $25,000 on a race.
Farrell appreciated the hesitation when Johnson expressed the lofty goals of the league.
“Tell you what, Mr. Johnson,” said Farrell, who had another solution at the ready. “We’ll find a team president and he’ll be the one the public comes to know.”
Farrell and Devery would own the team, and a mild-mannered coalmining executive named Joseph W. Gordon would be installed as president.
Apart from the coal-mining résumé, a term in the New York State Assembly (1888) and a year as New York’s superintendent of buildings (1901), Gordon had a baseball background. He had been president of the New York Metropolitans of the American Association and was a part of the New York Giants management team. He had been a young pitcher at PS 49, playing games in Central Park. He had some blueblood credentials, too: a member of rowing clubs and the New York Athletic Club. He lived in a nice apartment on West Eightieth Street, was tall, gray-haired, and distinguished looking, and met with Johnson’s approval.
