When she’d gotten home a few hours prior, it didn’t help that Rich was gone in her car. She definitely was beyond tired of that. She didn’t even get in her bed, because she didn’t want to sleep next to him so she got in her son’s bed and fell asleep. She lay there feeling like she was having a bad dream about Rich trying to kill her. Next thing she remembered was waking up with Rich’s hands around her throat. Immediately she started, kicking and fighting. He had certainly lost his everlasting mind and the look in his eyes told her that he meant business.

“Oh bitch, you been talking to your baby daddy?” He questioned. “Yeah, I peeped out your cell phone while you laying here knocked out.”

“Get off of me,” she said in between struggles. He wasn’t putting that much pressure on her, but he definitely was trying to scare the shit out of her.

Rich started trying to pull her dress up since she’d gone to sleep without coming out of her clothes. “Let me smell this pussy and make sure ain’t nobody been playing in my shit.” Lauren attempted to scream, but he put his hand over her mouth. “Shut the fuck up!” He yelled at her, aggressively shoving one of his hands up her Maxi dress while the other hand covered her mouth. She swung her hands wildly in the air, hoping that he wasn’t about to do what she thought he was going to do. He rammed two of his fingers up her pussy causing her to squirm even harder, trying to get loose. “Yeah, I’m gonna smell my muthafuckin’ pussy to make sure ain’t nobody been there.” Sure enough, he put the fingers up to his mouth and sniffed them. There must not have been any signs of dick scent so he licked his fingers like a psychotic rapist about to do his thing.

The minute his hand was removed from over her mouth, she started begging. “Noooo Rich, don’t do this,” she cried as he attempted to come out of his pants.
Please, don’t do this,
she thought. The tears fell from the corners of her eyes. She lay there almost helpless with feelings that she’d rather die than let this nasty ass nigga rape her. Her right arm fell limp on the bed as she eased it under the pillow, grabbing a firm grip of the object that she’d put there just for him. For some reason, she figured that he would try to start some shit and this time she would be ready for him. Never would she have thought that he was going to try and rape her though.

She squeezed the object tight in her hand, making sure that it would finish him. Her hand swiftly came from under the pillow, and then out of nowhere it startled him.

POW
!!! It sounded off like a gun had been shot as blood freely leaked from the side of Rich’s head. He grabbed his head, almost feeling dazed and fell over on the floor off her with his pants half way his butt. He glimpsed up out of the corner of his eye realizing that she’d hit his ass in the head with a hammer.

WHAT THE FUUUCK
!” He called out, still in shock that she had snuck a good one in on him. Lauren jumped up on her feet. The first thought was to take off running out of the room. “
Bitch, I’m gonna kill you today
!” He angrily stated, grabbing her by the ankle causing the hammer to fly out of hand and across the room as she attempted to get the hell out of there. Finding herself on the floor and having to think quickly, she forcefully kicked him in the face. She screamed out hoping that someone would hear her. A second later, she was jumping up off the floor while running out of the room and down the hallway. It was like she could feel Rich’s breath on her neck as she frantically looked back seeing that he’d gotten up on his feet and was now stumbling out of the room.

“Oh my God!” she whispered through heavy breaths. While bending the corner like hot coals were under feet, she ran past the sofa in the living room and dashed for the front door. Rich was coming for her ass and trying his best to get to her before she could make it there, but he was a bit too late. He reached out for the back of her hair just as she opened the door.

She screamed out in absolute fear, running right into Jamal. She nearly knocked him over just as he was about to ring the doorbell. “HE’S TRYING TO KILL ME!” she quickly yelled out. Jamal’s adrenaline kicked into overdrive. All he could see was a man trying to attack the woman that he loved and he charged at Rich like a raging bull. With instant blows to Rich’s face, Jamal BEAT the dog shit out of him!

Lauren was frightened and shaking like a leaf as she ran to a neighbor’s house to call the police. The last thing she could remember was running up to the door and banging on it as hard as she could. When the neighbor opened it up, she fell right in his arms, and then fainted from a loss of breath because of her adrenaline pumping at rapid speeds. She knew in her mind that Rich would have seriously hurt her had she not have made it out the door. Strangely, the man that saved her from heartache turned out to be the same man that would try to take her life. It was a scary twist of fate that would probably leave her traumatized for month’s to come.

Chapter 12

Mr. Ware walked into the kitchen as Mrs. Ware was cooking him some breakfast. He stepped over by her, kissing her on the neck. She was putting the turkey patties on the griddle while humming a tune.

“Hey honey,” she spoke since he’d just woke up.

“Good morning, Love. It smells good in here.” He responded then stepped over by the refrigerator to get him a cup of orange juice.

“How’d you sleep?”

“I slept good.” He said, “And you?”

She smiled. “I slept like a baby.”

Mr. Ware sat on the stool, pulling himself up to the island, granite countertop. He wanted to tell his wife what he’d done, but he was a little skeptical of her reaction.

“So, Kerry was going to come over this morning and eat breakfast with us. At least that’s what she said last night. However, she called this morning and said she had a hangover. Now, she’s not coming.”

“Kerry has a hangover?” Mr. Ware asked. He knew his girls drank and partied, but Kerry never was that much of a drinker to have a hangover.

“Yea,” Mrs. Ware responded with a smile. “She went out with the girls last night. I’m glad, she did. I believe she needs to start getting out more.”

“You just want her to get over Justin.” Mr. Ware cut in.

“And, what’s wrong with that?” Mrs. Ware asked with a serious frown on her face as she looked back at him.

“Nothing, but you have to know that sometimes they’ll stay attached to what they know before they accept how it is and move on. I just don’t want you to be disappointed if she decides to take him back.”

“I doubt it, Roy.” She said almost through gritted teeth. “Justin has gotten his girlfriend pregnant so Kerry isn’t taking him back, even if she wanted too.”

“Okay,” Mr. Ware said. He knew that his wife didn’t like Justin much, because of the way he treated Kerry. She knew he was a dog, but she never thought he’d do her like that. If anything, she always prayed that Kerry would wise up and leave him. That would’ve assured her that she was no pushover and wouldn’t go for being his doormat.  However, she stayed and he was the one that left. This always left doubt in her mind about their relationship, even if they were divorced. Somehow, she just wanted to believe otherwise.

“I know you don’t get in your girl’s business like that, but you do have certain expectations.”

“You should, too.”

“And, I do. But, they’re grown, Love. They’re going to live their own lives regardless of how we feel about it.”

Mrs. Ware stirred the grits up, glancing back over her shoulders at her husband. “I hear you,” she nonchalantly commented.

“Speaking of our daughters,” Mr. Ware said while taking in a deep breath. “I got in touch with Jamal earlier in the week.”

“Jamal… for what?” She asked, removing the turkey patties off of the griddle, then turning stove top off so the grits could cool.

“I thought he should come back and pay Lauren a visit.”

Mrs. Ware shook her head and looked back at Mr. Ware with a blank stare. About thirty seconds passed as she stood there, making sure she didn’t straight out get on his ass. He swallowed hard, knowing all too well what that look meant. Finally she spoke. “Would you please tell me why you thought that was a good idea?”

“I never said it was a good idea, but I definitely wanted to try and handle Rich in a different way than by going over there and killing him with my nine.”

Mrs. Ware pulled up a stool and sat down across from her husband. She surely didn’t care for Jamal, but at this point if his presence would get Lauren away from Rich then so be it.”

“I first made a call to Lauren and I spoke with her. I could tell that something was going on, even though she pretended that it wasn’t. So, I had a lil father-daughter talk with her. It was nothing major, but I was trying to feel her out without jumping right in her business. I got her to laugh about a few things, and then I asked her about her relationship with Rich.

“What’d she say?” Mrs. Ware curiously pondered.

“She said that everything was good, just like that.”

“Straight like that?”

Mr. Ware nodded his head. “Straight like that.” He repeated. “Her voice didn’t waver, which only meant that he’s gotten in her head, and is possibly threatening her. Every time I think about him putting his hands on her it makes me so mad. But, I don’t want to interfere like an overprotective daddy and push her deeper in a trap with him.”

“Tell me about it. That’s why I didn’t want to make her talk about it. I’d rather she just come out and say it or ask for help.” She said.

“She’s too stubborn to do that.” Mr. Ware said.

Mrs. Ware nodded her head to agree. “Well, what was the conversation about with Jamal? How did you think he could help?”

“I asked him if he could come and talk with her. I just wanted him to let her know that she’s a good person and that she needs a good man. I wanted him to be upfront with her about how he hurt her and that she shouldn’t allow anyone else to do the same. I’m hoping that this will open her eyes up and she’s able to either ask for help or build up the courage to put that lowlife boyfriend of hers out.”

“I don’t know,” Mrs. Ware said with uncertain thoughts. “It could work, but then again who knows? He has hurt her so bad that I just don’t trust him or want him around her.”

“I’m not saying that he’s good for her, because he’s not. He has definitely put her through a lot, but I can believe that he loves her. He was just caught up in a crazy situation.” Mr. Ware said.

“Being married is a situation that he put himself in. I wouldn’t call it crazy.”

“Well, I didn’t tell him anything about Rich putting his hands on her. I just told him that she’d gotten in a relationship to try and get over him and that I felt the guy was definitely no good for her. He says that he just wants to see Brandon, speak with her, and then leave to head back out of town. I don’t believe that Jamal is a bad man. He’s just caught up in something that even he doesn’t know how to get out of.”

Mrs. Ware sat quiet for a moment. “I do want Brandon to grow up knowing his dad. I just wish it was under different circumstances.” Just as Mrs. Ware was getting up to check the rolls in the oven, Mr. Ware’s cell phone started ringing. He looked over beside him at the caller ID.

“That’s him calling now. Maybe he’s already gotten her to meet him somewhere. Let’s just hope this works.” He said, answering his phone. “Hey Jamal, what’s going on?” Mr. Ware sat quiet for a moment while listening the his eyes grew wide as he sat on the phone fuming inside. The look on his face caused Mrs. Ware to frown with a gut feeling that something had happened. The next thing she heard was, “We’re on the way.”

ShaKita stepped out of the bathroom with nothing but a white towel wrapped around her waist. She had just gotten out of the shower as she walked over to the bed where Rocky was sleeping. She thought about Coco the entire night after the party. She hated that she’d hurt her like that and wished that it never happened, but Coco wasn’t responding to any of her text messages. As Rocky slept, she picked up her cell phone and exited the bedroom. She went inside of his living room and plopped down on the beige leather sectional. All she wanted to do was hear Coco’s voice and just make sure that she was good. She dialed her number, listening to the phone ring over and over again.

“She is not gonna answer this phone is she?” She whispered. “Damn, why should she? I beat her ass and I know I shouldn’t have.” As she sat there wishing that Coco would answer the phone, her text alert started beeping. She looked down at the phone and opened up the message to see that it was from Coco. She started reading it.

You can stop calling me because I’m not going to answer, bitch. Coco

“Bitch,” ShaKita whispered with a frown on her face. She sighed, contemplating what she’d message back.

I just wanted to apologize. Kita

There is nothing to apologize about. You were wrong, point blank. Coco

I know that I was wrong and I’m sorry. Kita

She sat there for about five minutes waiting for a response then…

Damn right you’re sorry. You’re a lying ass piece of shit. I’m gonna show you sorry. You’ve fucked with the wrong bitch. Coco

ShaKita’s neck jerked back. The displeasured look on her face was something that couldn’t be hid as she sat there not knowing what to say. Two minutes later, she decided to message back.

I’m sorry. It doesn’t have to be this way. I didn’t want to hit you, but you caught me off guard and all I know is to protect myself. I apologize and hope that you’ll forgive me, if not now then someday. Kita

Twenty minutes had passed with ShaKita still sitting there waiting on a response. It didn’t seem like it was going to happen. She’d definitely pissed Coco off and even though she was sorry, it didn’t matter. The first person that had tried to love her unconditionally had gotten shitted on. Nothing felt good about that as she sat there still feeling bad.

“Babe,” Rocky called out. Hearing his voice was the only thing that distracted her. She got up and headed down the hallway then entered the bedroom. He sat up in the bed and smiled at her. “Aww, look at baby’s eye.”
