He shook his head slowly, and then he started to smile. “I’ve been here a year, yes?”
I nodded. “It’s a year today since I walked into my kitchen and you stood up, all blue eyes and disarming smiles…”
He smiled at that. “And it’s taken me a year to prove to you that you deserve happiness, a year to get you to realise that I’m not leaving you. That not everybody is gonna leave you.”
I looked down at the ground. “Trav…”
He lifted my face in both his hands. “Then I don’t care how long it takes me to get you to see that you can have marriage and kids, Charlie.”
I shook my head in his hands. “I um…”
Shit.
“Do you want to get married, Charlie?” he asked me gently. “Do you want to have kids with me?”
Well, I didn’t until you mentioned it just now...
He still had my face in his hands. “Charlie?”
I tried looking away, across the darkened car park, but I couldn’t stop the tears. I nodded, because apparently I did want those things. I just didn’t know that I did. Until now.
“Oh, Charlie,” he said, pulling me against him. “I didn’t mean to upset you. I just saw you holding little Gracie and it looked
so
right. Please don’t cry.”
“I don’t know why I’m crying,” I said. “Stupid fucking tears.”
Travis laughed and pulled back, letting me wipe my face. “I’ll wait as long it takes for you to see you deserve it,” he said again. “And I’ll wait for you tell Ma before I tell my parents.”
“Tell them what?”
“That we’re engaged,” he said with a grin. “You did say yes, yes?”
“Um…”
“There’s no take-backs, Charlie.”
“Take-backs?”
“No take-backs, no returns.”
I smiled. “So it’s a forever thing?”
He smiled his eye-crinklin’ smile. “Charlie?”
“Yeah?”
“Fiancé.”
My heart thumped in my chest. “Um…”
He laughed. “Too soon?”
I exhaled in a rush. “Jeez, Trav.”
He laughed some more and kissed me. “Charlie?”
“Yeah.”
“Take me home.”
~ The End
Who am I?
Good question…
I am many things: a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer.
I have pretty, pretty boys who live in my head, who don't let me sleep at night unless I give them life with words.
I like it when they do dirty, dirty things… but I like it even more when they fall in love.
I used to think having people in my head talking to me was weird, until one day I happened across other writers who told me it was normal.
I've been writing ever since…
